FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 17,1871.
City and Neighborhood.
COOL, clear and bracing.
THE oil well is now doing a handsome business.
OUR city is constantly and rapidly Improving.
READ market reports in to-day's GAZETTE.
"EVERYBODY takes" Breuning's Saddle Rock oysters.
PREPARE your skates—and wait until it rains and freezes.
AND now comes Asbury Church for donations for the purchase of a new aod elegant organ.
"BLACK CROOK" matinee at the grand Opera House to-morrow afternoon at the usual hour.
"LET there be light" by night as well as by day, is the prayer of many of our citizens who "can't see it in that light."
GARRETT, the champion billiardist of the State, is in the city and astonishes our local knights of the cue by his skillful shots.
"FOSTER BROTHERS," last evening effected the purchase of a cross-grained and eross-eyed canine. No cow hides for them.
TOM LANGFORD is in daily receipt of large qualities of the best oysters the markets afford, which he disposes of at bargain rates.
RIDDLE, has gloves representing as many colors as Joseph's coat and of sizes to fit Tom Thumb or the ^ardifl giant, and all intermediate measures.
THK Rockville Republican of this week contains nearly a full column of gratuitous advertising of Foster Brothers. This firm think that the abuse of such newspapers is of greater advantage to them than their praise would be.
THE Rev. James Hill will preach Sunday night at Asbury Church on the subject of theaters and theater-going, taking the negative side of the question. The Black Crook will receive his Reverend attention.
THE ladies of the First Presbyterian Church will give an oyster supper at that structure, one week from this evening, for the benefit of the church, to which supper the public are cordially invited, and their attendance respectfully solicited.
JUDGE SCOTT has been busily engaged for the last two or three days in frautic endeavors to establish his identity. He has a little package of wealth in the Adams Express uffice, and no man draws money from there before he fully establishes his identity.
THE
Journal men* Announce' that
though "this is the twenty-third anniversary of their establishment, they have not time to get on a spree." Business before pleasure, gentlemen, you know. Just wait uutil Thanksgiving day, or Christmas time to get ou a spree.
THK i*pfiottii*« hfera|iin ediitttnJbd the Court aud Jury until the 23d hist., when it will again be coutiuued, or It may be dismissed. Why don't they strike the case from the docket at once, as they, no doubt, will do In the end. Thus could the couuty be saved considerable expense.
Ws learn from the Journal that the Honey Creek farmers eontemplate making it hot for breakers of Sunday law and disturbers of Sunday reflection, hv that viciuity hereafter. It will be well to remind Sunday huntsmen ot a place where they are rapidly drifting, according to orthodoxy.
THKRB are many married ladies in the city, who possess enough mind of their own to notify their "lords" that they have as much right to attend the Black Crook performances as anybody. Of such there was a large number at the grand Opera House last evening. Over one-third of the sgudienoe there last eve* ning waft ladles many of whom move in the highest circles of society. There were quite a uu&bBT ttf handsome ybung unmarried ladies present. Now, that the "ice is broken," we presume there will be but few ladies iu the city who will pot attend—if Mrs* G^rututy WHI but hold her

politics,
and therefore the wo

If the women who engineer these suffrage conventions have half the shrewdness which will be essential to guide them through ttfe labyrinths of political life, when they shall attain to it, they must give better evidence of it £han in putting to the front such apostles of Free Love as Addie Ballou, and such maxillary developments as General Lee. Else they can not scold if people who respect social purity and reverence the ties of an honorable home, obstinately refuse to get into a sweat over "woman's wrongs."
Tlie Black Crook
made a third appearance at the grand Opera House in this city last evening, to the largest and most appreciative audience which has yet greeted their appearance iu this city. More than onethird of those who attended were ladies at that, all of whom evidently appreciated the entertainment, especially the grand and magnificent scenery, including the brilliant and gorgeous transformation scene which closes the evening's performance.
The scenic effect last night was excellent, while the various members of the troupe 'Ud themselves and the management of the concern great credit, including "Professor Hilton" with his three singing and taking heads. The ventriloquism of Professor Hilton was unexceptionable.
This evening the "Crook" will make a fourth appearance at the grand Opera House, and to-morrow afternoon will be rendered a grand matinee entertainment and the last appearance of the company, in this city, will be on tomorrow evening.
TncTerre Haute GAZETTE slings the following reckless advice to us and wonderful assertion to its readers. We will confer a handsome reward upon the party who will translate it:
Th Indianapolis morning Journal will please take notice and steal this item as the other, in regard to the same case, and as a custom, do a large amount of the news they furnish their readers.—Indianapolis Journal.
We sit down to explain: In another column of the Journal, under the head of railroad matters," will be found an item from the GAZETTE in relation to the verdict of the jury in the case of John Gal breath vs. the I. & St. L. Railroad Company, recently tried at Charleston, Illinois, for which the Journal gives us no credit. A few days since, the Journal copied a half column report of the above case from the GAZETTE, also without credit.
The management of the Journal refuse to recognize the Evening News, of Indianapolis, by allowing its name to appear in the Journal when the News has as large a city, and we doubt not larger general circulation than the Journal. Notwithstanding the fact that the managers and editors of the Journal refuse to recognize the News, they glean much of their local news from its columns. Had the Journal men not cunningly clipped the above paragraph from the stolen item in their "railroad column" this explanation would not have been necessary, as it ex plained itself.
MADAME LAKE'S
roving
circus and menagerie
were"sold at auotion in Cincinnati last Wednesday.—JPress Dispatch. It will be remembered that Mrs. Lake exhibited her mammoth circus in this city this fall. At the time of the tragic death of her husband, Mrs. Lake was left some $60,000 iu money and property, and was advised by the great circus mau, John Robinson, to go to her pleasant little cottage home at Cincinnati and cease to travel advising her further, to put her money out at interest aud live on the interest. Being ambitious aud of a
disposition, no doubt, she would
not listen to this advice, but purchased a broken down circus aud menagerie, and followed ou iu the work of the "innumerable caravan which hadgoue before her," which finally resulted in bankruptcy. We understand she yet has her cottage left her, and will henceforth dwell therein. She has one daughter, a very handsome and accomplished girl, who will reside with her in the retiracy of suburban cottage life—for a time at least.
Such in part, is the financial history of one feminine who refused good masculine advice, and undertook to "go it alone," with most disastrous financial results.
As wrLT, be seen by reference to our advertising columns, Messrs. Pettis 4 Dickson, of Indianapolis, have on hand an inexhaustible quantity aud endless variety of everythiug in the line of dry goods which they will sell at great bargain prices. The established reputation of this firm for doing that kind of business is to well known to need any commendation from us. Read what they say, take their advice and you will pros,r-

ON the evening of the 22d inst., Rev. I. M. Wise, will enlighten our people on. the "Tenets of the Jewish ChUrcb," at the grand Opera House. It will be a most favorable opportuuity for those who would te posted in this matter to be in attendance. Aside from this consideration the Rabbi is one of the finest orators in the country, and will give a most excellent discourse, if our exchanges are reliable.
A STRIKING EVIDENCE of the advance of science and civilization in our country is the prompt and decisive steps taken in large cities to prepare for the expected and almost certain coming of the cholera. But a few years ago the only efforts made to escape its ravages, was by all who were able, taking safety in flight, leaving those who were too poor to leave, to care for themselves as best they could. When it did come, the result was fearful, and its victims were numbered by thousands. Now, however, the matter is left in the hands of the authorities, and the people rest in perfect confidence that all is right.
In our section of country disease makes its appearance each and every year, and no etiorts of our authorities can arrest its progress. The seeds of malaria are planted in its unhappy victims and bring forth abundant fruit, ague in every shape (billiousness, torpid liver, headache, chills and fever, intermittent fever) appears, and thousands suffer for months, until the appearance of frost, when the cause being removed, the effect at once ceases. Barr's Ague Medicine will remove the cause from the system as certainly as frost, and may be obtained now at every drug store in the land.

Maps of Palestine and nil Bible Lands. I shall state to the Bible readers of Terre Haute and vicinity, especially the Sabbath Schools, that. I am an agent for the above map. It is the Bible readers' map. The want of a small, convenient, yet comprehensive map of the Holy Land, for home study, has long been felt. Large wall maps in our vestries are well enough so far as they go but we get very little correct knowledge of the geography of the Bible from an occasional explana tion of them. Therefore you are in want ot a small map for your home study around the evening lamp or in the Sabbath School class. Such a map is an invaluable aid to Sabbath School superintendents and teachers. I am able to state, that this want is fully met in the above map, and needs only to be seen and examined to satisfy any one of its utility. It is only 29x39 inches, yet it shows
