Wb read wonderful things of the Talking Machine of Prof. Faoer,'. lately exhibited in Philadelphia. You see a highly ornamented table, and upon it Is a lifeless head which pronounces all the letters and elementary sounds of the English language, with phrases of six and eight words in French, German and English. Several years ago we advocated in these columns the adoption of one or more machlues to do the talking in the national Cougress, and now, just as we were congratulating ourselves upon a device which appeared at first blush to meet the case exactly, we are told, to our bitter disappointment, that the Faber contrivance is defective in its sounding of the* letter "I." This is fatal (unless it can be improved) to its use by our Representatives, who would be nothing if not capaple of souudingthe personalpronouu in a rotund and fortissimo way. As Ihe machine speaks with a fine German accent it might be found useful on the stump in Penusylvania, and we do not see why, for city purposes, it might not be arranged to discourse with a beautiful brogue.—N. Y. Tribune.

Great Loss ofCrimiiial Records. Most of tbe losses by the Chicago fire cau be made up, but some of the number are irreparable. Among tbe latter was the burning of a detective office, the contents of which are said, by the Chicago Tribune, to have been, in several instances, quite unique, and not to be replaced. Allan Pinkertown, who may be styled the Vidocq of the West, opened his Detective Agency in Chicago in 1852, nearly twenty years ago, and subsequently established branches at various points about the country. At the central office were kept records of all the work undertaken, to the minutest detail, and sometimes the chronicle has proved of inestimableservice to the cause of justice long after the original object was attained or abandoned. For the mere clerical work of these records over $50,000 had. been paid and the 400 immense volumes containing them have been entirely consumed.
Another grave loss consists in that of complete records of the Secret Service of the Army of the Potomac. These were of great value, since they were not only the complete, but the only set in existence. Mr. Pinkerton, who had extraor dinary facilities for making the collection, rates its worth at $50,000. The Govern ment, a short time ago, offered $30,000 for the set, and the negotiation was still going on at the time of the fire. These, like the other volumes, were totally destroyed. In fact, hardly anything gives a more vivid idea of the awful suddenness of the conflagration than the fact that, although the Agency had no fewer than forty-eight private officers in its employ, besides otner assistants, and although the walls were carefully placarded with instructions what to save first, in case of fire, none of these valuable documents could be rescued.
Other and less important papers were saved, but the archives of which no duplicates exist were lost in every instance. The materials that have thus perished would have furnished, says the journal referred to, "acomplete and exhaustive history of the Northwest, besides matter enough for thrilling stories without end." But in half an hour all this, together with a notable stock of disguises and other paraphernalia of the detective's art, secret closets and other appurtenance of "the best-regulated office in the country" was a heap of ashes. The only recognizable article left was a pen-holder that "surmounted" a heap of bricks, and showed where the famous detective office once had been.—New York Times.
New Departure.
And so, girls, you are going back to the trailing street dresses again! We had hoped better things of you. For a year or two we gloried in your loveliness as we met you on the pave. Neat, clean, modestly covered, and yet (faring to give occasional glimpses of a little foot
ubien
chausee," you were the very ideals of womanly taste and purity. Isow, "vous avez change tout cela/" and what a change! father, brother, husband, and sweetheart look at you as you trail over the sordid sidewalk of the muddy crossing, and think of soiled stockings, of underclothes embroidered with the sweepings of the streets of delicate ancles which left your boudoirs clothed in snowwhite, now clotted with gouts of tobaccojuice and bearing about them tbe contents and odors of the filthy streets of lavendered linens whose ruffles or embroideries have been dragged over squares of all vile and abomi nable things. Why do you do this detestable tuing? Do you wish to let everybody think you are just descended from your carriage? We know that many of you have no carriage, and in fact, do not care a brass farthing whether you have or not. But we do care a brass farthing whether you seem to be personally clean or not. You have no right to do anything to make you look unlovely, any more than the lily has a right to bow her superb head down into the mud at her feet. You are of the blessed things which God has given to the world to make it so beautiful to live in, and we deny your right to convey to others the idea of a soiled person any more than of a sullied mind. If you love us, girls— and we know you do—shorten the hems of your street garments and let us again see •*—Your dainty feet beneath your petticoats Like little mice steal in and out." —Louisville Commercial.

At a so-called spiritual sittiug in Hartford, recently, there was present a woman who mourned the loss of her ponsort, and, as the manifestations began
iv "i-
to appear, the spirit of the departed Benedict entered upon the scene. Of course the widow was now eager to engage in conversation with the absent one, and the following dialogue ensued
Widow—"Are you in the spirit world The Lamented—"I am."
Widow—"How long have you been there The Lamented—"Oh, some time."
Widow—"Don't you want to come back and be with you lonely wife?" The Lamented—"Not if I know mj self. It's hot enough around here."

upon the pit of the stomach of a child, will cause tbe bowels to be emptied, and allocs kept in contact with a raw surface will produce same effect as If the medicine had been taken into the stomach. So said the great Dr. Clutterback., Very many persons know tb« operation of croton oil when placed upon the tongue, to say the least, It is speedy. Purgativesin some sha. e, are indispensable in the p.', practice of medicine. Many diseases, are In- W curable without them and all of the" simple I disorders of tbe system are beneflttei by their "use. The great desideratum in theii administration has been to get one which has either laxative or purgative, as was needed—always mild but always efficient—and the use of which did
not make it necessary to continue its use. This 5: hasat last been done. Edward Wixdkk's Fax-

Pili-S fulfill all the requirements of the case. They area laxative, yet sure purgative, yet mild. In small doses, they meet the first want in large doses, they fulfill the latter, but in whatever quantity given, they create no necessity for they create no morbid state of the alimentary canal tube, but leave it cleansed and urge it to renewed health. They are, in brief, a blessing to the individual who suffers from constipation and needs a laxative, and are indispensable to him who is parched witn fever and requires a purgative. Up them, all you who value health.
Helminthology.
A distinguished physiologist has declared that it seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodies should be peopled with them. The huge whale is often driven tomadessbyan almost invisible member of the tribe of vermes. The hlstorv of Helminthology abounds in illustrations of the influence of worms in the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of men their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states of the animal economy, all tend to render them an object of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the study of these entoza with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedily, safely and permanently expelling them irom the human sytem. The British army when it advancea on Tala- "'"'J' vara and fought the celebrated battle, which was followed by a retreat into the plains, lost more men by the malarial diseases contracted on the banks of the Gaudiana than-by the bullets of the enetoy. They died by thousands'* All Europe believed that the lmadlnp army,'": was extirpated. Yet malaria diseases ore no .5 more common in Europe than in out owa( •. country they exist throughout the length ana breadth of our land—everywhere at some time and in some shape are we made to feel the sick-» ening influence of miasm. Dr. Laennec.
This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill in detecting the nature and form ol the malady before bim, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affections of the air passages still he left but few words concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better how to manage any one of these chest troubles he knows the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of the many potent agents which enter into the combination of Edivard Wilder-* Compound Extract of Wild Cherry, and knows that with the use oi this truly great medicine he is fully master oi the situation. He has no fear in the presence ol croup, no misgivings at the advance of bionchitis he grapples wtth consumption, and subdues every cough, cold, orcatarrh. Hence every family should always have this invaluabl medicine at hand.
Indigestion,
'Which makes sleep a pain, and turns its balm to wormwood. Is, we all know, the most, common of all the disorders of the stomach. It is also the moBt obstinate. It has been the most written about, it No disease presents such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency, which regulate natural events they bother the ,t. doctor, and can only be read by him who is skilled in the book of nature. It is self evident
tha the different forms of Indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has been said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying to each Individ- 0 ual case its precise and as it were, its indi fldual ,» cure. This is the object which every conscientious physician pursues unceasingly, and ne,ver
