people, the houses were young and old. shouting ana clapping their hands, and casting flowers and jewels of gold at their feet such was the delight they took in the staging that meant nothing, and the dancing that meant a great deal. Even so, also, did the men of the land of the Pahlivoos, and of the land of Jonbool. So that the whole world was filled with the uproar of these women and their singing and dancing was called, in the tongue of the Pahlivoos as it is spoken in the land of Uptoulpsalm, uproar booph. 10. Now when Jemphisc saw the chests full of silver and gold that he had taken from men on the Query road, and from them that had made that road and had bought it with a price, he said within himself, what shall I do that I may live as becometh a man of such great possessions. 11. And Jemphise pondered the matter. And he said, I will buy houses, and lands and ships, and chariots, and horses, and precious stones, and I will fare sumptuously every day. 12. And he bought the houses and the ships, and he dwelt in bothj and he went to his ships dressed in the raiment of an officer of the land of Unculpsalm. And albeit he was not an officer, no man gainsaid him^ because he was Jemphisc, and because he had great possessions. 13. For in Gotham if a man had great
iossessions, he might do what was right his own eyes, even if what was right in his own eyes would have been wrong in the eyes of other men, if he had not great possessions. 14. And he bought chariots and horses, and drove about Gotham seated on high in a great chariot, aud with many horses placed one before the other. And the people of Gotham said, Lo, there is Jemphisc riding iu a chariot, and with horses that he hath bought with the money which he hath taken on the Query road, and from them that made the road. 15. Aud he bought Jewels of gold and precious stone, and wore a breastplate of precious stones, even of one precious stone. Aud the shiuing of that stone Was seen afar off, and told of the coming of him that wore it. 16. Likewise also did Bibltuede and others of them in Thur Ing, so that men knew them thereby and when they saw a man with & breastplate of precious stonee, and he was not Jemphisc, they said, Lo he IB one of them that are of Thurlng. 17. Vet was not Jemphisc eontent with all these things andheoommuned with himself upon his doings and his and he said, Lo, I am like
umto Solomon, for my wealth and my wisdom. For have I not shown myself wiser than Daniel and his counsellors, and than Cornelius .and his counsellors And are tint my proverbs better than the proverbsot Solomon? And have I not

THE CHRONICLES OF GOTHAM.
Jim Fisk's Dancing Girls—A New Satire. Geo. W. Carleton & Co., have just issued a very clever satire called the "Chronicles of Gotham," by the author of the "New Gospel of Peace." It is sharp in its delineation of the acts and motives of the railway kings, the great Bulls and Bears of Wall street, and the operations of Gould & Fisfe, Jr. The final chapter is rather racy, and is as follows 1. And after these things, there came certain women to the city of Gotham, singing women and dancing women from the land of the Pahlivoos, and from the land of Jonbool. And the women were comely and fair to look upon and they all painted their eyelids like Jezebel, and they that came from the land of Jonbool stained their hair yellow, like gold. 2. And their garments began low and ended high. 3. And whereas other singing women and dancing women sang at one time, and danced at another, aud some would sing, and others would dance, these women all sang and all danced and they Bang aud danced at the same time, dancing when they sang, and singing when they danced. 4. And when they sang, they lifted up their arms, aud clapped their hands, that men might see that they were comely from the waist upward and when they danced, they flung out their feet behind, and walked around, that men might see that they were comely from the waist downward. 5. And the words of their signing, no man could understand for verily they meant nothing but their dancing meant a great deal, and was understood to all men. 6. And they found favor in the eyes of the men of Gotham. But in theeyesofthe women of Gotham, they were naught and they said, What are these women, that the men should set so much by them? 7. Do they not wear garments that begin low and end high, which is an abomination, and worketh confusion? Verily, we ourselves, when we go unto a feast, where there are many men to look upon UH, wear garments that begin low, but likewise they end low, even so low that a woman's raiment continueth long after the woman is ended. 8. And this is the rightful fashion of a woman's garments, that the ending shall be comfortable to the beginning, and the beginning unto the ending. For when we are by ourselves, in our own chambers, with no men, or only our husbands, to look upon us, our garments begin high and end higher than when we are at a feast. But these women that the men of Gotham run after, wear raiment the end of which correspondeth not unto the beginning and of a truth it seemeth to have neither top nor bottom, but to be all middle. Verily, it is an abomination and the men of Gotham are possessed of devils. 9. Notwithtanding, the men set none the less by the dancing and singing women, and when they played before the filled with men
except the ships
brought him apes aud peacocks and them I need not, for there be apes and 0 peaoocka to be seen of all men daily in the
Fifth Heavenue. Moreover, I have the righteousness of David, for have I not taken the Query road even as he took Naboth'a vineyard ... 18. Howbeit in one" thing Jemphisc saw that he was not yet like Solomon 4 for Solomon had seven hundred wives
and three hundred concubines. And he

unto him iu this matter also like unto him, but wiser. For after a man hath once had one wife, how can he that is not foolish ever desire to take to himself another? Wherefore I will skip the wives and begin with the concubines. 19. Yes, verily, I will skip six hun dred and ninety and nine of the wives and begin with three of the concubines, one for every thousand. And I wili. choose meconcubines of dancing women and singing women, and women thai ay before the people.
So he bought him an house, e^en a great house, for the women to dance in, and sing in, and play before the peo pie and he filled this house with danc ing women and singing women from the land of Pahlivoos, even of the women whose garments began low and ended high and out of these women he choose his concubines. 21. And in one part of this house he had his offices wherein he had his business, and wherein were his scribes and them that kept account, so that be might be near unto the dancing women and the singing women. Thus did Jemphisc join his buisness to his pleasure for he also was wise in his generation. 22. And he drove through^ the streets of Gotham, and round about in the gardens thereof, with his concubines in his great chariot, and with his horsee Jone before the otner. And the people said Lo, the men who made and bought the Query road, and from whom Jemphisc hath taken it, even as David took the vineyard of Nabotb, are paying also for these concubines, for their houses, and for their fine raiment, and for their jew els, and for their feasting. 23. Wherefore men said of Jemphisc, that he had the righteousness of David, and the wealth, and the wisdom, and magnificencs of Solomon. 24. And Jemphisc was as king in Goth« ham and he and his following, and Bihltuede, and Peter Beezoueni, and Hoaxumall, and Slipridic and their following, ruled in all the country of Maunattoon, and there was nothing done in the city but by their suffrance. 22. And the men of Gotham, even the merchants, and the lawyers, and the artificers, said unto their sons, Behold Jemphisc, and Bihltuede, and Peter Beezoueni, and Hoaxumall, aud Slipridic, and consider their ways if ye would learn wisdom and prosper. For these be the great ones and the notable, to whom it is given to rule in Gotham, and be the chief men therein. 26. And the young men did so, and considered the ways of Jemphisc, and of Bihltuede, and of them who were of Thurlng, and verily so likewise did the young women, learning wisdom and the way wherein to prosper. 27. And the rest of the doings of Jemphisc, and of Bihltuede, whose surname was Bighzhics, and Peter, whose surname was Beezoueni, and Hoaxumall the governor of the city and Slipridic the treasurer, and their following, and of the other great ones of that city, and of the Paddees, and of the riot that they made in Gotham, and of the breaking of Thur Ing, are they not written in the Second Book of the Chronicles of Gotham?

upon the pit of theatomaeh of a child, will cause the bowels to be emptied, ant aiioes kept In contact with a raw surface will producdsame effect** if the medicine had beea taken into the stomach* So said the great Dr. Clutterback. Very many persons know the operation of croton oil when placed upon the tongne, to say the least, it is speedy. Purgatives in some shape, are Indispensable in the practice of medicine. Many diseases are incurable without them and"all of the simple disorders of thesystem are benefitted by their use. The great desideratum In their administration bas been to get one which has either laxative or purgative, as was needed—always mild but always efficient—and the use of which did not make it necessary to continue its use. hasat last been done.

fulfill all the requirements of the
case. They area laxative, yet sure purgative, yet mild. In small doees, they meet tbe first' want in large doses, they fulfill the latter but in whatever quantity given, they create none cessity for they create no morbid state of the alimentary canal tube, butleave it cleansed and urge it to renewed health. They are, in brief, a blessing to the individual who suffers from constipation and needs a laxative, and are indispensable*) him who is parched witn fever and requires a purgative. Heiminthoiogy.
A distinguished physiologist has declared that it seems to be a principle of natnre that every situation capable of supporting organic bodies should be peopled with them. The huge whale is often driven to madess by an almost invisible member of the tribe of vermes. The historv of Heiminthoiogy abounds in illustrations of the influence of worms in the produiotion of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of m«a their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states oi the animal econoniy, all tend to render them an object of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the study of these entosa with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedily, safely and permanently expelling them irom the human sytem.

Dr. Laennec.
This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill in detecting the nature and form of the malady before blm, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affections of the air passages still he left but few words concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better how to manage any one of these chest troubles^ he knows the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of the many potent agents which enter into the combination of Edward Wilder-1 Compound Extract of Wild Cherry, and knows that with the use oi this truly great medicine he is fully master oi the situation. He has no fear in the presence ol croup, no misgivings at the advance of bronchitis he grapples wtth consumption, and subdues every cough, cold, or oatarrh. Hence every family should always have this invalnabl medicine at hand.
Indigestion,
'Which makes sleep a pain, and turns its balm to wormwood,' Is, we all know, the most, common of all the disorders of the stomach. It is also the most obstinate. It has been the most written about'.1* No disease presents such various, contrary, ^nd incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the lawB of order, constancy and inconsistency, which regulate natural events they bother the doctor, and can only be read bjf him who la skilled in the book of nature. It la self evident tha the different forms of indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has been said that the perfection of medical skill Is tl\e talent of applying to each Individual case Its precise and as it were, its lndi rldual cure. This is the object which every conscientious physician pursues unceasingly, and never can rest satisfied until h« ha Overtaken. JMward Witdtr'k Stomd&i Bitter*, their body being the purest of copper- distilled. whisky, make* this object attainable alike to all. They area specific—the disease specifying the remedy, not the remedy the disease. They area combination of substances which meet the speciality of the disorder by a corresponding sociality ot cure. They should be kept in every well-regu-lated family they are Indispensable to health.

The British army when it advancea on Talavara and fought the celebrated battle, which was followed by a retreat into the plains, lost more men by the malarial diseases contracted on the banks of the Gaudlana than by the bullets of the enemy. They died by thousands All Europe believed that the iniadlng army was extirpated. Yet malaria diseases are no more common In Europe than in our own country they exist throughout the length and breadth of otir land—everywhere st some time and in some shape are we made to feel the sickening influence of miasm. The three great actors in this equation of disease are solar heat, moisture,, and vegetable decomposition. The tiio, if separated, are harmless together they are more potent for evil than any dther known agents so long as they exist, Just long will we have need of a Medicine Which will overcome their pernicious effects* so loqg will It be necessary to have a remedy capable of meeting and beating the insidious enemy. Pf all known agents for this purpose, none is to compare with Edward Wildest Chill Tonic, the master of every form aud variety and grade and degree of malarial disease andof miasmatic poison. Try It, all you who are suffering from any form of ague and fever or chills and fever, as a cure is guaranteed In every case.
