The Latest Sensation in Billards. The Bridgeport Standard, of date of October 26, vouches for the following seeming improbabilities: "Mr. Jameson, of New York, one of tho finest billiardists in the country, stopped over at the Atlantic Hotel and gave exhibitions of his attainments in the way of managing the balls. He first made what is called the "flying shot.' This is done by placing three balls about two feet apart, close to the edge of the side cushion, played on the first with such force as to carry the others out of the way, drawing the cue ball back, forcing the object oall to the lower cushiou, from which it returns in a straight line in time to overtake the receding cue ball, cammiug upon it. He then plaoed an ordinary silk hat on the table, distant about one foot from the cushion. Near by and hard against the cushion was placed the dark red. With one of the white balls he played upon this ball in such a manner as to cause it to jump high in the air, and coming down, fell directly into the hat. The bat was now placed upon the 'spot,' and two balls in tlie jaw ot the table corner next to the player. With the object ball heshot in an opposite directum, giving the ball such a degree of 'English' as to cause it to curve gracefully arouud the hat and slowly reach the corner, caromiug upon the two balls. "A soft hat was now put upon the table. Under the hat placed the dark red. On tho hat's rim, and opposite each other, two balls. With the remaining ball he played upon that nearest him with force enough to raise the hat caroming on the ball beneath it. A young man held a ball in his hand, eighteen iuohes from the table. The oue ball was forced against the otyect ball hard euough to carry it upward and carom upon that held in the young man's hand. To carom on three balls iu three separate oorners is no ordinary feat. He performed it, however, after several at* tempts. Two balls were placed on the floor, forty feet distant from the table. Firing from the table, the cue ball jumped to the cushion, and from thence to the floor, rolling along until a carom was affeoted. A 'matset' shot, 'follow' and 'draw' with one ball, at the same time, would seem to be,, impossible, but not so with him. But of all the shots we ever saw or heard of was one where the two reds, with a white ball between and actually touching each other, and when the center ball was removed it could not here-1 placed without touchingoneor the other, yet he shot a ball between them without touching or making them stir in the least. This ball on returning caromed on the two reds. Two bails placed by any person in any position on the table he would carom on, shooting from any specified point. "Strange as the above may appear, it does not equal some of the billiard feats credited to theFatContributoro£Cinchi« nati. That worthy, on one occasion, in panning a dlfHou.*•

A STRAGE LUNATIC.
Singular Fancies of a Crazy Mother A few days ago, says the Detroit Free PrrsH, a woman named Eliza Porter, about fifty years of age, was taken to the County Iusance Asylum—her friends on George street having kept her a number of years under treatment without accomplishing the least good. Some fifteen years ago, while living at Trenton, N. J., the woman lo.st her husband by the acci dental discharge of a gun. She was then vigorous in body and mind, and would have rallied from the shock had it not been for the death of their only child within two weeks. The double portion of grief shattered her mind so that she did not recognize her most intimate friends, and beforea month rolled around she was a confirmed lunatic. In some way she got the idea that the corpse of her boy still possessed feeling after death, that it was sensible of the cold of winter as well as she. Dwelling upon this idea, she finally made it her mania. Often, during the two or three years succeeding the death of the child, she would be found hovering near its grave in the cemetery, sometimes spreading a blanket over the grave to keep out the cold.
Five or six years ago Mrs. Porter one day asked for paper and pencil, locked herself in her room, and when she came out had written several pages of verses. These she afterwards copied on some parchment procured for her, and has worn them about her ever since, being roused to madness if any attempt was made to remove them. When taken to the asylum the papers were accidentally left behind, and she crcated so much trouble about them after her arrival there that they were sent to her. There is something so strange and wild about the verses, and they show so strongely the curious hallucinations which possess the minds of lunatics that they are given below: Perhaps 'Us a childish whim
Of a broken heart—and one that grieves When the frosty gale sweeps down from the North,
To color anew the golden leaves When the chilly wind goes rushing by, Lnshlng the waters to fury and foam, Doing naught but wither and blight
A spirit of evil condemned to roam.
The childish whim of a grlving mind. And yet from the thought I cannot nee Go where will, and strive as I may, 'Tls iffways that one great thought with me, Simply tilts: Does my poor dead boy,
Lying up there so cold and still, Morrow and grieve at the season's changeWall and moan at the blasts so chill? A shroud is thin—perhaps the gale
Rcicho.s the coffin through the earth and sod, Seeking to cool the poor boy's soul— Forgetting 'twas long since with its God Toying awhile with its tear-stained shroud-
Li iting the locks of his golden ha'r— Seeking to open his eyes of blue— Then coming away to leave him there.
I fnin would say It can not be— Tho body is dead when once it dies— But the moaning sounds of the midnight gale
Come in to mo like th6 poor boy's cries. The house is so still of patting feet— Of shouts of mirth—of boyish tones— That the change has made a child of me—
I laugh at the gale as It loudly moans.
Oh! if the angels would give him backJust for a week—for a single dayLot. me but nestle liiro close once more
AH ho knelt him down by his cot to say: "Now I lay mo down to sleep"— Praying the Lord to bless us all— It drives mo mad to oall it up.
That, gloomy day—tlmti funeral pall. It in not be—the dead must sloep Till otornity calls—and these hot tears Ease only my heart, which else would break,
Ho burdened it is with childish fears. Only I liopo that the sleet and snow, Driving along likoan icy wave, Will gently deal with the poor dead hoy. slei

only on all the balls upon the table, but sent the spot ball through a window, up a rain spout, thence down a lightning rod, and finally settled it between three brass balls suspended over the door of pawnbroker's shop."
A RAPID young lady, who, it is said_ belongs to "one of the first families" in Flushing, amused herself on Sunday evening by masquarading in masculine habiliments and making calls of an amatory nature upon other young ladies of the local upper ten. It would seem to be so customary a thing in Flushing for the daughters of the "first families" to receive evening visits from perfect stran gers, and to have ardent attentions paid them on a first interview, that the fair intruder's fun was not interrupted until she bad visited several houses without an introduction and made ferocious love to their occupants.

MEDICAL.
A Cataplasm of Rhubarb. LAID
upon the pit of the stomach of a child, will cause the bowels to be emptied, and aiioes kept in contact with a raw surface will produce same effect as if the medicine had been taken into the stomach. So said the great Dr. Clutterback. Very many persons know the operation of croton oil when placed upon the tongue, to say the least, it is speedy. Purgatives in some sha, e, are indispensable In the practice of medicine. Many diseases are incurable without them and all of the simple disorders of the system are benefitted by their use. The great desideratum in their administration has been to get one which has either laxative or purgative, as was needed—always mild but always
efficient—and the use of which did
not make it neccssary to continue its use. This hasat last been done. EDWARD WIUDKB'S FAMILY PILLSfulfill all the requirements of the case. They area laxative, yet sure purgative, yet mild. In small doses, they meet the first wont: iu large doses, they fulfill the latter but in whatever quantity given, they create no necessity for they create no morbid state of the alimentary canal tube, butleave it cleansed and urge it to renewed health. They are, in brief, a blessing to the individual who suffers from constipation and needs a laxative, and aie indispensable to him who is parched with fever and requires a purgative. Use them, all you who value health.
Helmintliology.
A distinguished physiologist hasdeclared that it seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodies should be peopled with them. The huge whale is often driven tomadessbyan almost invisiblo member of the tribe of vermes. The historv of Helmintliology abounds in illustrations of the influence of worms in the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of men their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states of tlie animal economy, all tend to render them an object of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the study of these entoza with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedily, safely and permanently expelling them irom the human sytem. EDWARD WILDER'S MOTHER'S WORM SYRUP is a true vermicide, a geunine worm destroyer, a bona fide vermifuge. Its taste is delightful, its effects are quick, its results unfailing. It is free from danger. No intestinal worm can live in its presensfe. Mothers! destroy the worms which infest your little ones, with this delightful syrup."
Dr. Laennec.
This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill In detecting the nature and form of the malady before him, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affections of the air passages still he left but few words concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better how to manago any one of these chest troubles he knows the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of the many potent agents which enter into the combination of Edward Wilders Compound Extract of Wild Cherry, and knows that with the use ox this truly great medicine he is fully master ot the situation. He has no fear in the presence ot croup, no misgivings at the advance of bronchitis he grapples wtth consumption, and subdues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Hence every family should always have this invaluabl medicine at hand.
Indigestion,
'Which makes sleep a pain, and turns its balm to wormwood, is, we all know, the most, common of. all the disorders of the stomach. It is also the mcst obstinate. It has been the most written about. No disease presents such various, contrary, and. incompatible symptoms. They contradict all t.hp laws of order, constancy and inconsistency, which r/egplate natural events they bother the doctor, and .cpn only be read by him who is skilled in the book of nature. It is self evident tha the dlffecept forms of indigestion are to be met by correspondIpg methods of cure. It has been said that the perfection /of medical skill is the talent of applylpg to each Individual case Its precise and as it were, its ipdi vidiial cure.' This Is the object which every conscientious physician pursues unceasingly, apxl never can rest satisfied-until he lias overtaken. Edward Wilder's Stomach Bitters, their body being the purest of copper-distilled whisky, makes this object attainable alike to all. They area, specific—the disease specifying the remedy, not the remedy the disease. They area combina* tion of substances which meet the speciality of, jthe disorder by a corresponding speciality ot cThey should be kept in every well-regu-lated jfcfoJly they are indispensable to health.
