A CHARACTERISTIC feature of Sliakspeare, and which belongs to no other poet, in anything like a singular degree is that he constantly reminds one of the Bible. Wherever a passage occurs to memory, the origin of which is uncertain, it is almost invariably concluded that it must belong either to the Bible or the great bard. The following curious parallel passages, collated by a student of the "8weet Swan of Avon," may be cited iu proof of the foregoing statement. For instance

Othello: "Rude am I in my speech." Bible: "Butthough I be rude in speech" —2 Cor. xr, 6.

Witches in Macbeth "Show his eyes and grieve his heart." Bible: "Consume thine eyes and grieve thine heart."—1 Sam. 11,33.

Macbeth: "Life's but a walking shadow." Bible: "Man walketh in a vain, vain Bhow."—Ps. xxxix, 6.

Macbeth: "We ill die with harness on our back." Bible: "Nicanor lay dead in his harness."—2 Mac. xv, 28.

Banquo "Woe to the land that Is governed by a child." Bible: "Woe to thee, Oland, when thy king is a child."—Eccles. x. 16.

Timon of Athens "Who can call him his friend that dips in the same dish Bible: "He thatdippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me."

Almost any 'number of similar instances might be quoted. Note, for instance, the resemblance between the Bible declaration that "The wicked flee when no man pursueth," and that of Shakspeare "Suspicion always haunts the guilty mind!

The thief doth fear each bush an officer,"

while the third scene of the first act in the play of "Troilus and Cresida" is almost an exact paraphrase of Luke xxi, 25, 2G.

Better Imagined than Described. The feelings of a near-sighted man, who finds he has kissed his hand to the wrong lady.

The sitting through along sermon with tight boots. The finding your pocket-book gone just as you are leaving a strange hotel, with no time to spare to reach the cars.

The sudden recollection that you ate onions for dinner After you have been lialf-an-hour tete-a-tete with a charmer, in the evening, upon whom you wished to make an impression.

The rapidity with which fancy stocks decline, when you go in, and rise when you sell out.

The sensation from a lady's boot-heel (present style) when she steps on your foot accidentally.

The prices charged at some of the hotels on "the European style." The skill with which the "gentlemanly" barkeeper gives you short change.

Getting on horseback for the first time in your life. The amount of your gas and plumbing bill.

Your mother-in-law's remarks if you do not go to the mountains or sea shore during the season.

The being asked by a person at an evening party, with whom you arc acquainted, but whose name you can not recollect, to introduce him to your friend Miss Smuggins, who is coming towards you.

The feelings of the Tammany Ring and Brigham Young about these days.— Jiosioii Commercial Bulltdfn.

HERB is a specimen of California satire, from the San Francisco News Letter:

Here's another telegram from over the sea: "Dalrymple, member of Parliament for Bath, goes to America to study the treatment of drunfcirds." He need not come we can tell him all about it. The treatment of drunkards in this country is infamous they have to hold all the oAleces and do most of the hard stealing. Many of them are condemned to the pulpit for long terms and newspaper editing—in America the most dishonorable vocation known—is done by them exclusively. At least one of them is compelled to write two columns a week for the News Letter*.and another one has to pay him for it. There is no limit to the impositions practioed on the interesting class, the drunkards of America they are just trodden under foot by everybody who is sober enough to tread. If Dalrymple, M. P. for B. can do anything for them he will find himself very popular, and be expected to take a drink with every man he meets."

"That Little Difficulty.''

Edwin Booth was traveling on the cars. The passengers, hearing he was aboard, naturally evinced curiosity to see the great aotor. Among the passengers was a genuine Vermonter, who occupied a seat four or five benches in the rear of the great object. By slipping from one seat to another he occupied the one immediately "aft" Booth. His anxiety was great. Reaching" over and touching Edwin on the shoulder, he said: •!-'i "Ah! eh! excuse me, sir, but is your nameBeuth?"

In his well-modulated voice Booth replied "Yes, sir, my name Is Booth." "Ah! eh! excuse me, sir, but is your name Edwin Beuth "Yes, sir, my name is Edwin Booth "Really, eh ah I sir but yoti must really excuse me, sir, but ah 6h! sir, are yon a brother to the gentleman tftio had the difficulty with Mr. Lincoln at the theater

A CURIOUS suit has been on trial in a San Francisco Court, in which one Rupert Manuel, a native of Bombay, India, brings action to recover bound Volumes of the town and country magazine from 1769 to 17S0 one Hebrew Bible, in manuscript, dated before Christ 150 years "The Romance of Joseph arid Zuleika, a manuscript in the Persian language "The Arabian Nights Entertainment," a manuscript in the Arabic language. Manuel's testimony went to sh6Wth&t he has traveled extensively, and that he had a particular desire to obtain possession of old manuscripts and ancient works. He appears to nave made purchases of this kind in Pekin, China: in Persia, in Rome, Trieste, and other places. He also said he wa* at one time possessed of considerable wealth. The manuscript of the Hebrew Bible, B.C. 1IS0 years, be says he purchased it^Pokin.

WHAT is wealth? Wealth is whatever men can realize from nature for their sustenance and enjoyment. Labor is what realizes it. Prudence saves from it, and the savings become capital, which helps to extend and multiply the operations of labor, and thus creates more capital. The wealthy are composed of those who have inherited property from others, and those who have Acquired it accidentally, and those who have realized it for themselves. The poor, in like manner, are composed of those who have inherited poverty from others, those who have become poor through accident, and those who have brought poverty upon themselves. The most familiar mode of producing poverty is by idleness. A man will not work he realizes no wealth he is, of course, poor. Or he squanders in some absurd manner the earnings which he does not realize, and thus remains equally poor as if he did not work. The poverty arising from idleness will only be curable, as it ever has been since the beginning of the world, by industry. That which comes from wastefulness will only be cured by economy.

upon the pit of the stomach of a child, will cause the bowels to be emptied, and alloes kept in contact with a raw surface will produce same effect as if the medicinehad been taken into the stomach. So said the great Dr. Clutterback. Very many persons know the operation of croton oil when placed upon the tongue, to say the least, it is speedy.. Purgatives in some sha, e, are indispensable in the practice of medicine. Many diseases are incurable without them and all of the simple disorders of the system are benefitted by their use. The great desideratum in their administration has been to get one which has either laxative or purgative, as- was needed—always mild but alwaysejiicient—and the use of which did not make it necessary to continue its use. This has at last been done. EDWARD WILDER'S FAMILY PILLS fulfill all the requirements of the case. They area laxative, yet sure purgative, yet mild. -In small doses, they meet the first want in large doses, tliey fulfill the latter but in whatever quantity given, they create no necessity for they create 110 morbid state of the alimentary canal tube, but leave it cleaused and urge it to renewed health. They are, in brief, blessing to the individual who sutlers from constipation and needs a laxative, and are indispensable to him who is parched with lever and requires a purgative. Use them, all ou who value health.

llelmiutliology.

A distinguished physiologist has declared that it seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodies should be peopled with them. The huge whale is often driven tomadessbyan almost invisible member of the tribe of vermes. The historv of Helminthology abounds In illustrations of the influence of worms in the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of man their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states ol the animal economy, all tend to render them an object of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the study of these entoza with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedily, safely and permanently expelling them Irom the human sytem. EDWARD WILDER'S MOTHER'S WORM SYRUP is a true vermicide, a geunine worm destroyer, a

Dr. Laennec.

This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill In detecting the nature and form ol the malady before him, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all tha affections of the air passages still he left but few words concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better how to manage any one of these chest troubles he knows the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of the many potent agents which enter into the combination of

of Wild Cherry,

and knows that with the use oi

this truly great medicine he is fully master oi the situation, He has no fear in the presence ol croup, no misgivings at the advance of bronchitis he grapples M'tth consumption, and subdues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Hence every family should always have this invaluabl medicine at hand. •,

Indigestion,

•Which makes sleep a pain, and turns its balm to wormwood, is, we all know, the most, common of all the disorders of the stomach. It is also the most obstinate. It has been the most written about. No disease presents such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency, which regulate natural events they bother the doctor, and can only be read by him who is skilled in the book of nature. It is self evident tha the different forms of indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has been said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying to each individual case its precise and as It were, its individual cure. This is the object which every conscientious physician pursues unceasingly, and never can rest satisfied until he has overtaken.

The British army when it advancea on Talavara and fought the celebrated battle, which was followed by ia retreat into the plains, lost more men by the malarial diseases contracted on the banks of the Gaudlana than by the bullets of the enemy. They died by thousands All Europe believed that the invading army was extirpated. Yet malaria diseases are no more common in Europe than in our own country they exist throughout the length and breadth of our land—everywhere at some time and in some shape are we made to feel the sickanlng influence of miasm. The three grept actors in this equation of-disease are solar beat, moisture, and vegetable decomposition. The tiio, if separated, are harmless together they are more potent for evil than any other known agents so long as they exist, Just so long will we have need of a medicine which will overcome their pernicious eflects, so long will it be necessary to have a remedy capable of meeting and beating the insidious enemy. Of all known agents for this purpose, none is to compare with
