THE WISCONSIN FIRES.
A Good Description from a Reliable Lady. Miss Laura Owens, the, lady of Indianapolis who published a letter in the
GA-
ZETTK regarding Mrs. Ferris recently, has been to Chicago, and the Sentinel of Judiaaapolis speaks of her and what she saw
Miss Laura C. Owens, Secretary of the Indianapolis Ladies' Relief Society, and one of the delegation appointed to visit Chicago, and other points north which had suffered from the late fires, has returned, and from her we learn something of the visit of her party. They arrived in Chicago Friday morning, the 27tli ult. and were met by Mayor Mason, who provided a carriage and guide with which a tour of inspection of the burnt district was made. Miss Owens says that while passing through Laselle street tunnel her intention was called £o view a strange feature of the fire. The rough edges of the stone, for fifteen feet below the surface of the ground, was broken and cut as smoothly as though an accomplished workman had done the job. She says that but little of the Nicholson pavement was burned, and that the walls of the Third Presbyterian Church, one of the oldest buildings in the city, the stone for which was procured within a few miles of Chicago, stood the fire better than any other building. While driving through the city they came across the young lady seamstress who fed six hundred people for one week at her own expense. She asked that her name be suppressed, but many prayers will go up for that selfsacrificing lady, whose reward is beyond this life.
After viewing the ruins, the party were driven to the various places in the city where relief is distributed. The Matron of the Orphans' Home has thrown open her large sitting room for the use of those who are willing to meet there aud make clothing for the sufferers. The inmates of the Home for the Friendless are doing their share in the good work. Mrs. N. B. Judd, President of the Hyde Park Ladies' Aid Society, Mrs. O. B. Marsh, Superintendent of Clothing of the Chicago Relief and Aid Society, Mrs. President of the same society, Mrs. Collier, Chairman of the Special Committee, Mrs. A. C. Calkins, and many other noble ladies are doing what, they can to alleviate the condition of the sufferers, and to them and to Mayor Mason, Mrs. Browne, Mr. Charles Calkins, Mrs. Marsh, and Miss Owens wishes to return the thanks of their party for the courtesy shown them during their short stay in Chicago.
The party left Chicago for Detroit, and arrived at the "City of the Straits" next morning. Mayor Wheaton "was sent for, and to him the ladies explained the object of their visit, aud asked some
Tinformation
as to the best manner in
which to accomplish their mission. To this he replied "Ladies, I thank you, for coming so far from home, and all I have to say is, that if you came here with the intention of gaining the burnt district, and distrN 'buting your clothing, the best thing you can do is to i?o at once back home on the same car ride, and take your clothing with you. I think Detroit can take care of Michigan." He was very Sarcastic during most of his conversation. The ladies became indignant at such a reception, and were about to depart in disgust, when Mr. C. H. Garrison came in to contradict the Mayor's assertipns, aud said they were glad of what aid they could get! Garrison is the Chairman of the
State Relief Committee. Miss Owens gives a glowing description of the manner in which they were treated by Mr. Garrison and the members of his committee. In leaving Detroit they felt that they were leaviug gentlemen who knew how to treat strangers.
Everything is being done to supply the many wants of the Miohigan sufferers— clothing, foodj bedding, building hardware, axes, nails, sash, glass and lumber are sent in abundant quantities, and the people of the burnt districts are requested to remain quietly at home and rebuild their homes and stock their farms as fast as possible.
While in Detroit, the Committee visited Windsor, Cauada, just aoross the St. Clair river. A large fire visited that

lace two weeks since, laying two in ashes. Quite a number of public buildings were destroyed, among them the postotnee. Great difficulty was exerienced in procuring water to drink, ut unlimited quantities of other liquors abounded.
Miss Owens thought it had to be telegraphed to the Mayor, at Milwaukee, and ascertain exactly the condition of Wisconsin. The Mayor, Mr. Ludingtoii, answered the dispatch as follows "Laura C. Owens, &«cretary Melitf Committee "We have a perfect organization in this city, with a prospect of clothing and provisions in abundance. Our want is money. There is no immediate necessity for your visiting our city, as our committee is now distributing all supplies.
Thanks,
H. LUDINGTON,
Mayor.
Miss Owens closed her report by saying: "From personal observation and telegraphing to responsible parties, and receiving favorable auswere, we would submit the following W+ -kaow that 'a friend in need is a friend itttleed,' and also we know that the Northern sufferers are being supplied abundantly. Gen.
Sheridan told me that he had sent to the Governor of Wisconsin 4,000 blanket*.

Regular State cotamittees have been organized, and distributing committees appointed vass the counties and townships, and supply tlu needy with everything. We gave our Uxes into the hands of Mr. C. A SPANN of LaFayette horses attached to a carriage fouud their way home unguided from the vicinity erf Stockwell, twenty-eight miles away, where they had been left hitched to a fence by their driver while he ate his supper. They had a defeetive bridge in their homeward way, which they avoided by fording the stream'by a road which they surveyed themselves. The carriage was not so much as scratched. The driver was considerably astonished on returning by rail to find the team safely stabled at home.

upon the pit of the stomach of a child, will cause the bowels to be emptied, and alloes kept in contact with a raw surface will produce same effect as if tha medicine had been taken into the stomach. So said the great Dr. Clutterback. Very many persons know the operation of croton oil when placed upon the tongue, to say the least, it is speedy. Purgativesin some slia. e, are indispensable in the practice of medicine-. Many .diseases are incurable without them and all of the simple disonlers of the system are benefitted by their use. The grea, tdeslderatum in their administration has been to get one Which lias either laxative or purgative, as was needed—always mild but always eitUaeiU—ami the use of which did not make It necessarj' to continue its use. This has at last been done. EDWARD WILDEK'S FAM

PILLS fulfill all the requirements of the case. They area laxative^ yet sure purgative, yet mild. In small doses, they meet the first wnnt: iu large doses, they fulfill the latter but in whatever quantity given, they create no necessity for they create no morbid state of the alimentary canal tube, but leave it cleansed and urge it to renewed health. They are, in brief, a blessing to the individual who •suffers from constipation and needs a laxative, and are indispensable to him who is parched with fever and requires a purgative. Use tlienl, all you who value.health.

Helminthology.
A distinguished physiologist has declared that it seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodies should be peopled witii them. The huge whale Is often driven lo madess by an almost invisiblo member of the tribe of vermes. The historv of Helminthology abounds in illustrations of the influence of worms in the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of men their obviousness to the senses, together with tlioir common connection with enfeebled and morbid states ot the animal economy, all tend to render them an object of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the study of these cntoza with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedily, safely aud permanently expelling them irom the human sytem. Dr. Laennec.
This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill In detecting the nature and form of the malady before him, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affections of the air passages still he left but few words concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better how to manage any one of these chest troubles he knows the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of the many potent agents which enter Into the combination of Edward Wilders Compound Extract of Wild Cherry, and^nows that with the useoi this truly great medicine he is fully master ot the situation, He has no fear in the presence ot croup, no misgivings at the advance of bronchitis h« grapplfcs wtth consumption, and subdues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Hence every family shouid always have this invaluabl medicine at hand.

Indigestion,
'Which makes sleep a pain, and turnB its balm to wormwood,' is, we all know, the most, common disorders of the stomach. It is also t\ obstinate. It has been the most written" No disease presents such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency, which regulate natural events they bother the doctor, and can only be read by him who Is skilled in the book of nature. It is self evident tha the different forms of indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has been said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying to each Individual case its precise and as it were, its individual cure. This is the object which every conscientious physician pursues unceasingly, and never can rest satisfied until he has overtaken. Ed~ ward Wilder's Stomach Bitten, their body being the purest of copper-distilled whisky, makeB this object attainable alike to all. They area specific—the disease specifying the remedy, not the remedy the disease. They are a combination of substances which meet the speciality ol the disorder by a corresponding speciality ot cure. They should be kept in every well-regu-lated family they are Indispensable to health.

The British army when it advancea on Talavara and fought the celebrated battle, which was followed by a retreat Into the plains, lost more men by the malarial diseases contracted on the banks of the G&udiana than by the bullets of the enemy. They died by thousands All Europe believed that the invading army was extlrpa.ted. Yet malaria diseases are no more common in Europe than in our own country they exist throughout the length and breadth of our land—everywhere at some time and in some shape are we made to feel the sickening influence of miasm. The three grept actors in this equation of disease are solar heat, moisture, and vegetable decomposition. The tiio, if separated, are harmless together they are more potent for evil than any other known agents so long as they exist, just so long will we have need of a medicine which will overcome their pernicious effects, so long will It be necessary to have a remedy capable of meeting and beating the Insidious enemy. Of all known agents for this purpose, none is to compare with Edward Wilder's Chili Tonic, the master of every form aud variety and grade and degree of malarial disease and of miasmatic poison. Try it, all you who are suffering from any form of ague and fever or chills and fever, as a cure is guaranteed ID every case,

lor patients suffering with diseases of
the skin, and every patient, old or young, is taking potash in. some shape, and Honduras sarsaparilla in some foam.: They were esteemed by the renowned ^physicians who had charge of the skin department as well-specific In almost every variety of cutaneous disease, whether of rheumaticorscrofulous or simple origin. They were given in tetter, ringworm, nettle-ash, roseash,'pimples, scrofula, ulcers, old sores, falling of the hair, etc. In all they did good, in most they effected a cure.. Bnt It has remained for Edward Wilder's Sarsaparilla and JPaUtfh to perform the most remarkable cures awarded to any known medicine. It possesses virtues shared b^ ^no other combination of these substances. It Is a therapeutic marvel. Against aU the disease at which it is aimed it is simply resistless it never faijs. See to it that you suffer not one day longer with any of the ills which it cures. Get it at once. v,-' :i tf*'
