I day

Is what I've got for going far away She cheered me by her letters every day. A million could not pay such loyalty She knows I'm coming: but she does'nt know

That I am rich: and she will be there, too, Dressed in her best—her best, my poor Sue! I'll beta hundred 'twill be calico! "7'Mdress her now?" You bet it!—but go slow,

This luck's a heap too good to last, I fear I shan't iielleve it till I'm fairly there: The train may smash up, easy, yet, you know The only reason if It don't, will be

That I'm so strongly thinking that It will. I'm nervous, say you? Just alitt'e, still The luck is none too good for Sue, you see. Hollo! we're here!—there's Sue, by all that's grand

Stranger, excuse me, sir, but would you mind Togo ahead and tell her I'm behind I'm choking see my eyes—you understand?

The Svvinburning and Californiantic schools of poets might deny that the above lines are poetry yet while there are human hearts to love what is most lovely in woman, aud honor what is most tender and reverential of her in man, there must always be a sufficiently large audience to applaud the author of the "Compensation," and regret that his name does not accompany his verse.

A Woinnn Defines Her Position. A correspondent of the San YMfifilSco Chronical, who signs herself "Tormented Woman," defines her position thus "I am pestered with offers." Now I never offered to marry a man. I never had the presumption to say to a gentle men 'If you will be my exclusive companion for life I will support you I will be a mother to your children. As to congeniality, why I've only seen you in company dress but you please me in that and I'll take it for granted that in all their intricacies and complications our natures rfe

In the following quiet little genre picture in verse, from the Jansville (Wis.) Gazette there are touching suggestions of a not uncommon domestic history and pethetic tribute to the glorious true womanhood that crowns man's worthiest work: Yoit think I'm nervous, stranger? Well, I am

Ii 'twa'n't for making silly people talk I'd get rJghi off this pokiin train and walk From here to where I'm going—Amsterdam. That's where I live, you see. As for Lacrosse— (Excuse me, neighbor, I mvsi talk or bust)—

Hluce I vebeen there it's three years certain, Jast And now to laugli or cry is just a toss. "Married?" Why, yes, that's where it is, you see

I've telegraphed her I was strong and well, And coming to her but I didn't tell That I was rich. 1 thought I'd let that be. It's too good luck, this is,to last, you know,

And, stranger, if it wasn't kind of rash, I'd bet my bottom dollar that we smash Before—but shaw! excuse me, I'll go slow. You see, when we were married, Sue and f,

I was a good mechanic, aud not poor Until I struck it, as I reckoned sure, In an invention I was working sly. All I could make went into that concern

And people called me crazy for it, too. And said I'd better stiek to what I knew But folks wiU talk, and have to live and learn. In all this world I had but one friend then,

But she stood by me nobly, through, aud through, And said 'twould como out right at last she knew— One woman staunch is worth a dozen men!

Twas tough sometimes, though when a loaf of bread Stood on the table—all the meal we ha1!— I should have gone, alone, quite to the bad But, through it all, Susan kept her head. 'Twas her advice that sent me off at last—

She said she'd work her Angers to the bone, Aud live fortwenty mortal years alone, Rather than give it up—thank God, that past! A hundred thousand and a royalty

Ox the authority of a Danish paper, it is said thatHerr Woerman, a ship owner of Hamburg, has been commissioned to procure a coffin for his present majesty, the King of Jberio, on the east coast of Africa. The coffin is of firwood, polished on the outside, and, on the whole, furnished very comfortably. It is lined with red velvet, and has soft velvet cushions. There are five glass windows in the lid to let the light enter, and under it is placed a mirror for air to reflection. The handles and feet are of tin, as well as the window settings and lastly, the coffin's arrangement is completed by two bottles ot gin and the necessary glasses. It is also stated that the box is to be placed in the meantime "in his majesty's state apartments," where it is to be hoped the two bottles of gin will not prove too tempting.

upon the pit of the stomach of a child, will cause the bowels to be emptied, and alloeskept in contact with a raw surface will produce same effect as if the medicine had been taken into the stomach. So said the great Dr. Clutterback. Very many persons know the operation of croton oil when placed upon the tongue, to say the least, it is speedy. Purgatives in some sha. e, are indispensable In the practice of medicine. Many diseases are incurable without them and all of the simple disorders of the system are benefitted by their use. The great desideratum in their administration lias been to get one which has either laxative or purgative, as was needed—always mild but always efficient—and the use of which did not make it necessary to continue its use. This hasat done. EDWARD WINDER'S FAMILY

IIJJJ fulfill ail the requirements of the case. They area laxative, yet sure purgative, yet mild. In small doses, they meet the first want in large doses, they fulfill the latter but in whatever quantity given, they create no necessity for they create no morbid state of the alimentary canal tube, but leave it cleansed and urge it to renewed health. They are, in brief, a blessing to the individual who suffers from constipation and needs a laxative, and are indispeusable to him who is parched with fever and requires a purgative. Use them, all you who value health.

Helmiiithology.

A distinguished physiologist has declared that it seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodies should be peopled with them. The huge whale is often driven to madess by an almost invislblo member of the tribe of vermes. The historv of Helminthology abounds ln illustrations of the influence of worms in the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of men their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid Btates ol the animal economy, all tend to render them an object of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the study of these entoza with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedily, safely ajid permanently expelling them trom the human sytem. EDWARD WILDKR'S MOTHER'S WORM SYRUP IS a true vermicide, a geunine worm destroyer, a bona fide vermifuge. Its taste is delightful, its effects are quick, its results unfailing, It is free from danger. No intestinal worm can live in itspresense. Mothers! destroy the worms which infest your little ones, with this deiightful syrup.

Dr. Laennec.

This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill in detecting the nature and form of the malady before him, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affections of the air passages still he left but few ords concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better how to manage any one of these ches't troubles he knows the value of the wild cherry he Is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of the many potent agents which enter into the combination of Edward Wilder1s Compound Extract of Wild Cherry, and knows that with the use oi this truly great medicine he is fully master oi the situation. He has no fear in the presence ol croup, no misgivings at the advance of bronchitis he grapples wtth consumption, and subdues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Hence every family should always have this invaluabl medicine at hand.

obstinate. It has been the most written No disease presents such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency,

skilled in the book of nature. It is self evident tha the different forms of indigestion are to be iflet by corresponding methods of cure. It has been said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying to each individual case its precise and as it were, its individual cure. This is the object which every conscientious physician pursues unceasingly, and never can rest satisfied .until he has overtaken. Edward Wilder's Stomach Bitters, their body being the purest of copper-distilled whisky, makes this object attainable alike to all. They arc a specific—the disease specifying the remedy, not the remedy the disease. They area combination of substances whtfh meet the speciality of the disorder by a corresponding speciality ol cure. They should be kept in every well-regur lated family they are indispensable to health, iaieu mm"?, uj

Gaudianna River*.,

The British army when it advancea on Talnvara and fought the celebrated battle, which was followed by a retreat into the plains, lost more men by the malarial diseases contracted on the banks of the Gaudiana than by the bullets of the enemy. They died by thousands All Europe believed that the invading army was extirpated. Yet malaria diseases are no more common in Europe than in our own country they exist throughout the length and breadth of our land—everywhere at some time and in some shape are we made to feel the sickening influence of miasm. The three greft actors in this equation of disease are solar heat, moisture, and vegetable decomposition. The tiio, if separated, are harmless together they are more potent for evil than any other known agents so long as they exist, Just so long will we have need of a medicine which will overcome their pernicious effects, so long will it be necessary to have a remedy capable of meeting and beating the insidious enemy. Of all known agents for this purpose, none is to compare with Edward Wilder'* Chill Tonic, the master of every form aud variety and grade and degree of malarial disease and of miasmatic poison. Try it, all you who are suffering from any form of ague and fever or chills and fever, as a cure is guaranteed in every case.

St. Louis Hospital, Paris.

This ancient institution is one ot the largest, and to the medical student, the most interesting ofthe many public charities which adorn the gay capltol of the French. It receives •within its walls annually thousands of sick poor. A considerable portion of the building is set apart for patients suffering with diseases of the skin, and every patient, old or young, is taking potash in some shape, and Honduras sarsaparilla in gome form. They were esteemed by the renowned physicians who had charge of the skin department as well-specific in almost every variety of cutaneous disease, whether of rheumatic orscrofulous or simple origin. They were given in tetter, ringworm, nettle-ash,rose-ash,'pimples, scrofula, ulcers, old sores, falling of the hair, etc. In all they did good,in uipSt they effected a cure. But it has remained fpr Edward Wilder1sSarsaparilla and Potash to perform the most remarkable cures awarded to any known medicine. lt possesses virtues shared by no other combination of these substances. It is a therapeutic marvel. Against all the disease at which it is aimed It is simply resistless it never fails. See to it that you suffer not one day longer with any of the ills which it cures. Getit at once.
