If a hen's spur is hard, and the scales on the legs rough, she is old, whether you see her head or not, but her head will corroborate your observation. If the underbill is so stiff that you cannot bend it down, and the comb thick and rough, leave her, no matter how fat and plump, for some one less particular. A young hen has only the rudiments of spurs the scales on the legs are smooth, glossy and fresh colored, whatever the color may be the claws tender and short, the nails sharp, the underbill soft, ana the comb thin and smooth.

How to Judge Poultry.
A writer in the Mural Jtfew Yorker says: As oold weather is coming on, and the time arrived for purchasing poultry for the table, it may not be out of place to give a few general rules by which the age of fowls of all descriptions can be safely judged. In following these rules no reason need be assigned by any grocer, much less housekeeper, for purchasing other than good, wholesome aud tender fowls.
An old hen turkey has rough scales on the legs, callosities on the soles of the feet, and long, strong claws a young, one the reverse of all the marks. When* the feathers are on the old turkey cock has a long tuft or beavd, a young one but a sprouting one and when they are off, the smooth scales on the leg decide the point, besides the difference in the size of the wattles of the neck and in the elastic shoot upon the nose.
An old goose when alive is known by the rough legs, the strength of the wings, particularly at the piuions, the thickness and strength of the bill, and the fineness of the feathers and when pluoked, by of the skin
the legs, the tenderness under the wings, by the pinions and the bill and the coarseness of the skin.
Ducks are distinguished by the same means, but there is this difference—that a duckling's bill is much longer in proportion to the breadth of its head than the old ducks.
A youug pigeon is discovered by its pale color, smooth scales, tender collapsed feet, and the yellow, long doWti interspersed among its leathers. A pigeon that can fly has always red colored legs and no down, MM) is then too old for use. 1
Snake Swallowing Snake.
You have enough of "telescoping'* railroad cars in America. Have you ever heard ot telescoping serpents? A few days ago, a rabbit was put into a cage at the zoological gardens in Regent's Park, occupied by two or three pythons and boa-constrictors. Soon, from the excitement of the spectators, the keeper noticed something unasual had happeued. Running around to the back of the cage, he. saw that an immense Indian python, 11 feet long, had swallowed, not ouly the rabbit, out a hoa-coustrictor, who hailed from South America, and measured about six feet. Bravely jumpiug into the cage, the keeper, whose name was Holland, seized the monster by the throaC. Open flew the wide mouth, and out fell first the dead rabbit. Holland seized the protruding four inches of the tail of the Jonahised snake, and by punching the big fellow in the ribs, and shaking and. ^ueeslng bin wfrile he kept his»

From the Columous, Ohio, Statesman, October 28th. A CASE OF FALSE WHISKERS.
A Gentleman En fionte to St. Lonis With a Female Friend Is Relieved of His Hirsuite Appendages.
As the train aver the Baltimore & Ohio road glided into the shades of our magnificent tinion depot, on Thursday evening, a gentleman and lady stepped from the platform and entered the eating house of the Messrs. Ohmer. The lady was faultlessly attired—the gentleman ditto—and sported, in a'ddition to his fine store clothes, a magnificent pair of Burnside whiskers and drooping mustache of raven hue, which had been tta envy of the male and the admiration or the female portion of his fellow travelers, from the moment of his first appearance on the train—the envy of the male bipeds, running so high as to reach even the gentlemanly conductor, who was not slow in intimating to Officers McCabe and Fix, that the man was a fit subject for suspicion, and needed a little watching. "These two gentlemen, ever zealous for the faithful performance of their duties, stood not on the order of their going, but went at once for the unconscious pair, and it was but the work of a moment ere the gentleman was in the strong grasp of 'Long Barney,' while the gallant Fix police collared the lady and gently escorted her to another portion of the depot. "Having got the pair separated, Barney, struck with the gentleman's magnificent Burnsides and mustache, could not forbear placing his hands on the aforesaid whiskers for the purpose of bestowing a gentle caress, when, lo! the whiskers fell to the ground, leaving the gentleman's face as innocent of a hirsute appendage as a youth in his first adolescence." Herts was a go! And thereupon Barney proceeded to interview him. "The gentleman's name was Powell— Benjamin Powell—from the smoky city of Wheeling—and he was largely interested in rolling mill operations in Newark he was on his way to Cincinnati on a little business the lady was an old friend from—Newark. Was the lady his wife? Oh,no! but expected she would be—some day. She was going to St. Louis to visit friends he was escorting her to#Cincinnati—that was all. But about the whiskers? He had assumed the disguise to prevent certain interested parties in Newark from spoiling his little trip in company with his intended wife —some day! "Meanwhile the gallant Fix proceeded to pump the terrified one. Was the gentleman with the whiskers her husband? Oli, no but expected to be— some day She was on her way to St. Louis, had been married, but separated from her husband ten years ago. He was living with his third wife. Her name was Mary Turner, but expected to change it—some day "Upon consultation, the officers came to the conclusion that if everything was not right at present, it probably would be—some day and the handsome pair were permitted to resume their journey in peace, minus the whiskers, which our friend Bal ney retained, thinking possibly that, to a gentleman in his profession, they might be of use—some day

He ouly seemed to wonder where be had been, as he lay with his mouth wide open on the floor of his cage. It is pro bable that the two snakes seized the rabbit simultaneously, and when once the smaller one came within those terrible jaws, the teeth of which are set back ward, the rewas no retreat possible. The British army when it advanceo on Talavara and fought the celebrated battle, which was followed by a retreat into the plains, lost more men by the malarial diseases contracted on the banks of the Gaudiana than by the bullets of the enemy. They, died by thousands All Europe believed that the invading army was extirpated. Yet malaria diseases are no more common in Europe than in our own country they exist throughout the length and breadth of our land—everywhere at some time and in some shape are we made to feel the sickening influence of miasm. The three greet actors in this equation of disease are solar heat, moisture, and vegetable decomposition. The trio, if separated, are harmless together they are more potent for evil than any other knowai agents so long as they exist, justjso long will we have need of a medicine which will overcome their pernicious effects, so long will it be necessary to have a remedy capable of meeting and beating the insidious: enemy. Of all known agents for this purpose, none Is to compare With Edward Wilder'* Chill Tonic, the master of every form aud variety and grade and degree of malarial disease and of miasmatic poison. Try it, all you who are suffering from any form of ague and fever or chills and fever, as a cure is guarahte^,in ^yery case. ._

upon the pit of the stomach of a child, will cause the bowels to be emptied, and alloes kept in contact with a raw surface will, produce same eflect as if the medicine had been taken into the stomach. So said the great Dr. Clutterback. Very many persons know the operation of crot-on oil when placed upon the tongue, to say the least, it is speedy. Purgatives in some sha e, are indispensable in the practice of medicine. Many diseases are incurable without them and all of the simple disonlers of the system are benefitted by their use. The great desideratum in their administration hus been to get ou«j which has either laxative or purgative, as was needed—always miid but always efficient—and the use of which did not make it necessary to continuo its use. This has at last been done.
EDWAED AVILDKB'S FAM
ILY PILLS fulfill all the requirements of the case. They area laxative, yet sure purgative#, yetmilj. In small doses, they meet the first want: in large doses, they fulfill the latter but in whatever quantity given, they create no necessity for they create no morbid state of the alimentary canal tube, butleave it cleansed and urge it to renewed health. They are, in brief, a blessing to the individual who suffers from constipatiou and needs a laxativ e, and are indispensable to him who is parched with fever and requires a purgative. Use them, all you who value health.
Helmintliology.
A distinguished physiologist has declared that It seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodies should be peopled with them. The huge whale la often driven to madess by an, almost invisible memberpS the tribe of vermes. The historv of Helminthology abounds in illustrations of the Influence of worms in the productloirof disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of man their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states ot the animal economy, all tend to render them an object of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the study of these entoza with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedily, safely and permanently expelling them irom the human sytem.

WARD WINDER'S MOTHER'S WORM SYRUP is a true vermicide, a geuninq worm destroyer, a bona flde vermifuge. Its taste is delightful, its effects are quick, its results unfailing. It is free from danger. Dr. Laennec.
This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill in detecting the nature and form ol the malady before him, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affections of the air passages still he left but few words concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better how to manage any one of these chest troubles he knows the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of the many potent agents which enter into the combination of JSdward Wilder-s Compound Extract of Wild Cherry, and knows that with the use oi this truly great medicine he is fully master oi the situation, He has no fear in the presence ol croup, no misgivings at the advance of bronchitis he grapples wtth consumption, and subdues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Hence every family should always have this invaluabl medicine at hand. .....
Indigestion,
'Which makes sleep a pain, and turns its balm to wormwood, is, we all know, the most, common of all the disorders of the stomach. It is also the most obstinate. It has been the most written about. No disease presents such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency, which regulate natural events they bother the doctor, and can only be read by him who is skilled in the book of nature. It is self evident tha the different forms of indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has been said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying to each individual case its precise and aslt were, its individual cure. This is the object which every conscientious physician pursues unceasingly, and never can rest satisfied until* he has overtaken. Edward Wilder'* Stomach Bitters, their body being the purest of copper-distilled whisky, makes this object attainable alike to all. They area specific—the disease specifying the remedy, not the remedy the disease. They are a combination of substances which meet the speciality ol the disorder by a corresponding speciality ol cure. They should be kept in every well-regu-lated family they are indispensable to health.
This ancient institution is one ot the largest, and to the medical student, the most interesting of the many public charities which adornt the gay capitol of the French. It receives within its walls annually thousands of sick poor. A Considerable portion o( the building iafJ I
