Meerschaum Pipes.

A correspondent of the New York eve ning Post, writing from Kub!a, Ger many, says: The principal articles of manufacture are meerschaum pipes, ci-gar-holders, fancy tobacco cases, and leather and carved wood ware. On the evening of my arrival I visited the shop of the "Ziegler Brothers," descendents of the celebrated traveler, a house which was established to promote the regular manafacture and marketing of meerschaum pipes, by means of combined effort and the advancement of mon^y to needy workmen. The house "Gebruder Ziegler" celebrated, in 1867, its one hundredth anniversary. The oldest mem her of the Arm related, with great anima tion, in his "singing" dialect, the incidents of that extraordinary day how the people of the v\ hole village, _and even processions of laborers from distant vilages, took part in the festivities. The room in whicn I conversed with this "A. T. Stewart,"of Ruhla, wasj«mall and low, studded, with no attempt at either ornamental or conveninent arrangement. The walls of the room were covered with pipes and samples of meerschaum work in all possible forms and conditions. The workmen are not established in one room, but do their work in their own houses. During a stroll through the village I noticed work benches at the windows of almost every room on the street.

One of the Zieglers gave me some interesting information in relation to the manufacture and sale of the meerchaum pipes. Most of the manufactured pipes are sent to England, France, Denmark, Sweden, Russia and America very few are sold in Germauy. The war has also cut off the demand on the part of France. On ttie other band, Bussia takes more than ever before. The meerschaum is imported in its raw condition from Turkey it is turned and cut into the required form, filed smooth, dipped in melted tallow, wiped dry and polished •with "Dutch grass" boiled in a mixture of wax and tallow, and rubbed with cloth until it receives the proper shine and smoothness. The cuttings are ground to powder, cleansed and united with glue iuto masses, which are afterwards colored aud worked up into imitation meerchaum pipes.

The number of porcelain pipes and silver mounting for wooden pipes manufactured in Buhla is something enormous. The mounting of the pipes alone with silver, copper and tin ornaments, gives constant employment to several hundred persons. In the year 1869 Buhla turned out 1,700,000 dozen sets of metalic pipemountings About two hundred thousand pounds of brass were used in the process. The amount of silver in the socalled "silvw mountings" is not heavy, since a German thaler—about seventy* five cents—suffices to galvanize from four to six hundred dozen pipe-mountings.

From the Washington Chronicle.

A Chicago Girl's Letter to Her Lover in Washington. A. young man of this city, a tew days since, received a letter from Miss Helen D. (the daughter of a well-known and before the fire an influential dealer in

grain in that city), to whom he was engaged to be married next week (Tuesday), in which, after describing all the sufferings she has undergone since they w&ie driven out of their house late at night by the devastating flames, she says:

Our wedding will have to be postponed for at least one year, as I am in no condition at present to be married not that I love you less than ever, for you know that better than I can tell you, but that we have no house to live in and my father is rendered" almost destitute by the fire. His place of business was, as you know, in the burnt district, and was swept away in company with a number of others the second night of the fire. We expect to have a new house built in a few weeks, just around the corner from where we formerly resided, near street and avenue. I am very glad that you did not come to this city when you intended, for then you would be as the rest of us, half scared to death. Father was up at the time, and saved two suits of clothes, the one he had on and another, but we, that is Mar, Jeneatte and I, were less lucky. You would be surprised to see me, the morning after we were driven out of the house, with a pair of Jin^s old pants on, one slipper,

iPP

one shoe, and a waterproof coak. This was, indeed, my complete outfit, and it was not till yesterday that I received some other clothes from my cousin Mary, who sent them from Cincinnati. Th^t would have made a splendid weddiugsuit, wouldn't It? g* Jg

A SINGULAR accident happened the other cfey In the streets of Londou. It appears that a huge steam boiler was iu Pall Mall on its way to St. James Park, to be used on some paving work. At 12 o'clock the driver of the engine concluded to go and get his dinner. He, therefore, shut off steam, and left the eugiue standing near a statue in front of the Pall Mall restaurant. A crowd of people soon gathered round, including some mischievous boys, oue of whom got on the engine and managed in some way to start it. This done, the lad ran away. The locomotive, to the dismay of the bystanders, started off. at first slowly, but continually increasing its speed, and presently spread cousternation all around. It$ first direction was for the statue, which it would probably haVe overthrown if not demolished, bat when, close up to it the engine turned eapriciously almost at a right angle, went straight across the street, and iuto the shop of Mr. Thompson, a photographic oolorist. Its entranoe was effected by the window, which was smashed, and not only this, but the heavy stone facade underneath the glass was shattered to, fragment*. Several ladies stauding in frout of thi? window were slightly hart, aud one gentleman seriously. Two other ladies fainted in the crowd, and, being trampled under foot, received bad, although not dangerous, injuries. The devastation committed by the an,ruly .machine in the window, which was full of pictures and other fragile articles, is said to have been iudescribable, and it is easy to believe that a bull in a china-shop could have been nothing lo it.

Sleep Walking.

Ao exchange says one of the greatest palkf feats of sleep walking on rte rd, was lately performed by a married lady, who

about one o'clock on Saturday morning last, this lady dreamed that her father, who resides near Hastings, Oswego county, was very sick, and had sent lor her to visit him immediately. She arose from bed, dressed herself, and started on foot to Liverpool, where she thought she could take the cars on the Northern Bailroad, for Hastings.

She arrived at Liverpool, and stopped at the house of a Just ice of the Peace of the town of Salina, at a little after daylight. During all this time the lady was souud asleep, and did not awake until after arriving at the house. Her feet were sore, and one of her ankles badly swollen from the effects of her long tramp, a distance of not less than fifteen miles. The lady says that she was perfectly unconscious during her long walk, and the last she could remember before arriving at the hou^e was the 3ream that her father was dangerously ill, and desired her immediate presence.

upon the pit of the stomach of

Helininthology.

A distinguished physiologist has declared

it

Dr. Laennec.

This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill in detecting the nature and form of the malady before bim, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affections of the air passages still he left but few words concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better how to manage any one of these chest troubles he knows the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of the many potent agents which enter into the eombinatlon of Edward Wilder-a Compound Extract of WUd Cherry, and knows that with the use oi this truly great medicine he is fully master oi the situation.' He has no fear in the presence ot croup, no misgivings at the advance of bronchitis he grapples wtth consumption, and subdues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Hence every family should always have this invaluabl® medicine at hand*, -3 ~i

Indigestion,

Wh ic'6'makes sleep a pain, and turnft its balm1 to wormwood/' is, we all know, the most, common of all the disorders of the stomach. It is also the most -v obstinate. It has been the most written about. No disease presents such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency, which regulate natural events they bother the doctor, and can only be read by him who is skilled in the book of nature. It is self evident tha the different forms of indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has been said that the perfection of medieal skill is the talent of applying to each Individual case its precise and as it were, its lndl ridual 4 cure. This iff the object which every conscientious physician pursues unceasingly, and never p.-.5 can rest satisfied until be htus overtaken. Edward Wilder1 Stomach Bitters, their body being the.purest of copper*distilled 'whisky, makes this object attainable alike to all. They area specific—the disease specifying the remedy, not the remedy the disease. They are a comblnation of substances which meet t£e speciality ot the disorder by a corresponding speciality of Lh. re. They should be kept in every well-regu- j" lated family they are Indispensable to health,

Gaudianna River*

The British army when it advanced on Talavara and fought the celebrated battle, which was followed by a retreat into the plains, lost more men by the malarial diseases contracted on the banks of the Gaudiana than by the bullets of the enemy. They died by thousands All Europe believed that the invading army was extirpated. Yet malaria diseases are no more common in Europe than in out' own country they exist throughout the length and breadth of our land—everywhere at some time and in some shape are we made to feel the sickaning influence of miasm. The three grep actors in this equation of disease are solar heat,' moisture, and vegetable decomposition. The tiio, if separated, are harmless together theyfeg^t are more potent for evil than any other known' agents so long as they exist, Just so long wiU, we have need of a medicine which will overcome their pernicious effects, so long will it bef necessary to have a remedy capable of meeting"-' and beating the insidious enemy. Of ail known agents for this purpose, none Is to compare with^^ Edward Wilder's Chill Tonic, the master of everyL form and variety and grade and degree ofmala-^ rial disease andof miasmatic poison. Try it, all^1 you who are suffering from any form of agne%^M and fever or chills and fever, as a enre is guar-^:«v anteed in every case. ,•

St. Louis Hospital, Paris.

This ancient institution is one ol the largest,^, and to the medical student, the most interest-^ '**4 ing of the many public charities which adorn gpfy the gay capltol of the French. It receives within its walls annually thousands of sick poor. A considerable portion of the building is set apart for patients suffering with diseases of .^, .. the skin, and every patient, old or young, is 'i taking potash in some shape, and Honduras sarsaparilla in some form. They were esteemed by the renowned physicians who had charge of the skin department as well-specific in almost every variety of cutaneous disease, whether of rheumatic orscrofulous or simple origin. They were given in tetter, ringworm, nettle-ash, roseash, pimples, scroftila, ulcers, old sores, falling oth 1 the hair, etc. Inall they did good,In uioetthey effected a cure. But it has remained for Edward Wilder's Sarsaparilla and Potash to perform the most remarkable cures awarded to any known medicine. It possesses virtues shared by no 'Mfi other combination, of these substances. It isgff^ a therapeutic marvel. Against all the disease at which it is aimed It is simply resistless it'S. never falls. See to it that you suffer not one day longer with any of the ills which it cures, ,@€ttit,|kVp^ce. .-.MR

child,

will cause the bowels to be emptied, and allees kept in contact with a raw surface wills, produce same effect ns if the medicine had been taken into the stomach. So said the great Dr. Clutterback. Very many persons know the operation of croton oil when placed upon the tongue, to say the least, it is speedy. Purgatives in some sha. e, are indispensable in the a practice of medicine. Many diseases are incurable without them 'and all of the simple1" disorders of the system are benefitted by their use. The great desideratum ih their administration has been to get one which has either laxative or purgative, as was needed—always mild •'y but always efficient—and the use of which did not make it necessary to continue its use. This hasat last been done. EDWARD WILDEE'S FAMILY PILLS fulfill all the requirements of the case. They area laxative, yet sure purgative, yet mild. In small doses, they meet the first want in large doses, they fulfill the latter but in whatever quantity given, they create no necessity for they create no morbid state of the alimentary canal tube, but leave it cleansed and urge it to renewed health. They are, in brief, a blessing to the individual who suffers from constipation and needs a laxative, and are indispensable to him who is parched with fever and requires a purgative. Use them, all you who value health. ,, y*
