Thy answer of rescue came But alas I it could not enter Through the horrible flame and heat, For the Are had conquered the lightning.
And sat in the Tlmpderer's seat. God bless thee again, Sal it Louis! For resting never then, Tnou call^dest to all toe cities,
By II htning and steam and pen, "Ho, ho, yehundre'i sisters, Stand forth in your bravest might! Our sister in flame is falling,

At daybreak over the prairies Re-eolioed the gladsome cry— "Oh, look unlo us, ye thousands,
Ye shall not hunger nor die!" Their weeping was all the answer That the famishing thr ngcould give To the million voices calling, "Look unto us, und live!" Destruction wasted the city,
But tlie-burning curse that came Enkindled in all the people Sweet charity's holy flame. Then still to our God be glory

She—(Administering a roguish fan tup.) "Perhaps I may prove your Thrasher too."
He—"Well, aud if you do so, you will find me as docile in your hands as piue wood in the grasp of wood-workers, or dilapidated textiles in rag-uiachinery."
She—"Your heart will never wander from me He—"My sweet Sugar Evaporator 1 as soon expect tosee a patentSawmill wandering iu the galleries, or Steam Boildrs and Tobacco Machines promenading arm in arm through Art Hall. She—"See the incouUnent throng, how they flit from one objeot of interest to another now stopping to fondle a Peg-, ging Machine or an Automatic Boiler I iFeeder, and again pausing to inhale tlie fragrance of Washiug Machines aud plug tobacco. So it isyl fear, withmpu who confess to love."

INDUSTRIAL LOVE MAKING.
Humors of the Cincinnati Exposition. Two young turtle-doves wandering •with pinions entwined, among the labyrinths and bowers of the Exposition ^Buildings, were overheard to coo thusly:
She—"Do you indeed love me true?" He—"True as the needle to the sewing machine, or the most accurate case of mathematical apparatus on exhibition. When I look at you my heart warms like a heating stove, and beats like a steam hammer."
She—"I can believe you, then?" He—"Doubt burglar proof safes and plated ware, wax work, miiliuery and safety valves, but never doubt my love."
that happened in that which lhlght well employ the ardent pen of a novelist. It was a fine moonlight evening when young clerk "might have been seen," and in fact was seen, musingly strolling down Wabash avenue toward his fruga." boarding house. Casting his eyes toward the* lake, what was his surprise to see the figure of a lady, clad in a white dressing gown, at the water's edge. As she was moving slowly toward the moist element, and was evidently a somnam bulist, the youth felt justified in in terfering to prevent her from taking an unexpected bath. He therefore grasped her arm and awoke her from the trance. Comprehending the situation at once, she became extremely embarrassed, ana blushingly allowed her gallant attendant to escort her to her palatial residence, near at hand. 8o politely and delicately did he conduct himself under the very peculiar circumstances that he produced a very favorable impression upon the young lady's miud. Not long afterward they met at a party, but did not recognize each other. They met again two or three times afterwards, and one evening it was his lot to accompany her home.^ They passed up the avenue,' and to his great delight she paused before the same' door to which he had led the beautiful somnambulist. He could not resist an exclamation of surprise, and when she asked its cause and saw his confusion, the whole affair suddenly flashed across her mind. Tableau. And now there is talk of a wedding whereby gallantry will be united to loveliness and not a little wealth, so that there is no immediate prospect of the lovers going over the hills to the poor house.

HAVE compiled full, concise and complete for the information of persons, intending to take up a Homestead orPre-Emption in this poetry of the West, embracing Iowa, Dakota, and Nebraska and o»her sections. It explains how to proceed to secure 160 acres of Elch Farming Land for Nothirg. six months before you leave your home, in tne most healthful climate. In short it contains ust such instructions as are needed by thewe ntending to make a Home and Fortune in the Free Lands of the West. I .will send one of these printed Guides to any person for 25 cents. The information alone, which, it gives la worth S5 to anybody. Men who came here two and three years ago, and took a farm, are to-day independent. tt

This country is being crossed with numerou Railroads from every direction to Sioux oity Iowa. Six Railroads will be made totnis city within oneyear. One is already In operation connecting ns with Chicago and the U. P. Railroad and two more will be completed before spring, connecting us with Dubuque and McGregor, direct. Three more will be completed within a year, connecting us direct with St. Paul Minn., Yankton, Dakota, and Columbus, Nebraska, on the U. P. Railroad. The Missouri River gives ns the Mountain Trade. us it wil 1 be seen that no section of country offers such unprecedented advantages for business, speculation and making a fortune, for the country is being populated, a Jd towns and cities are being bunt, ana fortune! -vide almost beyond belief. Every man who es a homestead now will have a railroad market at his own door, And any enterprising young man with a small capital can establish himself in a permanent paying business, if he selects the right location and right branch of trade. Eighteen years residence in the western country, and a large portion of the lime employed a& a Mercantile Agent in this country, has made me familiar with all the branched of business and the best locations in t.M« country. For one dollar remitted to me I will give truthful and definite answers to all questions oh this subject desired by such persona.
