The Michigan Southern Railroad Depot (the Vanderhilt depot excepted) the finest building on this continent devoted to railway purposas. It was built of Athens marble.

The Union Depot was famous on account of it* immense size. It was the terminus of several railroads.

The Custom House and Postoffice building Was a large and handsome marble building of Athens marble, built on the same plan as buildings devoted to the same purpose at Cleveland, Detroit and Toledo.

The First and Second Presbyterian Churches on Wabash avenue were among the finest buildings in the country devoted to religious worship. The First was near Van Buren street, and was built in 1853 at a cost of one hundred thousand dollars.

The Dearborn Theater, on Dearborn street, between Madison and Washington streets, was a very handsome structure, used as a minstrel hall.

Farwell Hall was one of the handsomest halls in the United States, and is said to have accomodated four thousand people.

Aiken's Museum, combined with its halls, filled with collections of rarities, a pretty little theater.

McVicker's Theater was the principal theater of the city, and was visited yearly by the prominent stars of the dramatic profession.

The Sherman House, one of the handsomest and largest hotels in the West, was built in 1860, of Athens marble, at a cost of $400,000. The Briggs House was likewise a handsome building, as wus also the Metropolitan Hotel.

The Crosby Opera House, the beauty and value of which was bruited about .when it became the chief prize in a lottery, stood on Washington street, between State and Dearborn streets. It had a front of one hundred and-forty feet on Washington street, and ran back one hundred and seventy-nine feet. The building was completed iu 1869 at a cost of $460,000.

Fine JUanners in Women.

Is there any barrier against presumption, and against an attempt at equality, like thorough-bred courtesy? "Do what you will, you can never be so thorough a lady as I am," was the impression made upon me by the sweet humility, the plain dreas, the almost forlorn surroundings of Mrs. Custis, the former mistress of Arlington. It was more what she did not do, the absence of effort, coupled with the desire to make you happy, the thorough breeding, the self-abnegation, thegraeelul dignity, that made this lady a duchess in her faded realm. Such breeding and such manners as hers are not within the reach of every one—they are partly natural gilts—but the virtues which led to them are to be cultivated by everybody with some hope of success. Miss Sedgwick was one of these wonderful well-bred women No woman in America was more tumour than she in her prime, and she had much of the grace, with little (ff the lormality, of those "old-school" manners in which she must have been trained. Flattery never turned her head she was bumble and modest as a village school girl, graceful and courtly as Madame de Sevigne. Her manner of introducing! two persons has never been surpassed she made them both feel honored and distinguished. Her attitude of listening was in itself a compliment, and to the very last she maintained a charm, beyond beauty, the charm of perfect manners.—JAppencotVa Magazine

A good story Is told of a patriotic dominie in Berkshire, who, iu the war times of 1S12, was prone to preach Democratic politics, and thank the Lord very specially, as well as very fervidly, for any favors shown toourarms. It was a great viotoiyj aud t. good man rose to his prayer, trembling with excitement—all thetnote that the •subject matter would be news to most of his hearers. ago, divided readers into four classes, The first he compared to the hour-glass, their reading being as the sand—it runs in and out, and leaves not a vestge behind. A second-class, he said, resembled a sponge, which imbibes everything, returns it in nearly the same state, only a little dirtier. A third class he likened to a jelly bag, which allows all that is pure to pass away, and retains only the refuse and dregs. The fourth class, of which he trusted there were many among his auditors, he compared to the slaves in the diamond mines of Gol conda, who, casting aside all that is worthless, preserve, only the pure gem
