UXDEB A WOMAN'S MANAGEMENT.
The Adaptability of Woman for Business. Many of our readers, and more particularly those who are lovers of amusement, will remember the once justly eel ebrated and famous clown, Wm. Lake, who by careful aiad judicious management, became the owner of one of the largest traveling circuses in the world. He was noted for his close application to his profession, and gained by his urbanity and civility of manners hosts of friends among those with whom he had business transactions.
During the fall of 1869, Mr. Lake, then in the full prime and vigor of manhood surrounded by a family who were dependent upon him exclusively, lost his life at the hands of a noted desperado in Missouri. His widow was left at a moment's notice at the head of one of the mo3t gigantic organizations in the United States. With a determination to make the business one of respectability, she assumed direct control of the same, since which time she bits succeeded in freeing her company of the many traditional vices connected with exhibitions of like nature.
With her company to-day are no swindling arrangements of any kind, no three-card monte throwers, no jew— elry cases, no ten dice cloths, in fact no devise of any kind will she allow to be practiced on the grounds occupied by her mammoth exhibitions. Not only has the widow banished the swindling operations of these nefarious games, but with consummate tact has evinced a degree of skill in the directing of her company that would do honor to the oldest managers known to the profession.
She to-day is at the head of one the largest and most complete organizations in the worlf, comprizing a circus and managerie, unequalled for meritorious performances, and for its many and varied points of excellence, which has placed it in the first rank of exhibitions. Her arenic department is composed of artists well known to fame, and our many exchanges speak of their exhibitions of skill as wondrous and daring beyond parallel. Fifty star artists complete the circus department, giving quick and surprising acts of horsemanship, and daring gy ihnastic feats that seem incredible.
The menagerie comprises specimens of all the most rare living wild animals, among which will be found three dens of performing lions. These will be exhibited at each entertainment. We are pleased to chronicle the success of Mrs. Lake, and bespeak for her an ovation at the hands of our citizens that will certainly satisfy her in a financial point of view.
The company will exhibit here on Thursday October 19th, giving two grand performances on that day, at two and seven P. M' The location chosen by Mr. Joseph, the agent for Mrs. Lake, is^the square opposited the Terre Haute House. For full particulars we refer our readers to the advertisement which will appear in our issue of to-morrow.

W. S. Polhemus, formerly a conductor on the Vandalia Line, is in the city for the purpose of giving a deposition In the case of one Graham, of Greencastle vs. the Vandalia Railroad Company. Graham was struck by a passing train about two years ago. The case is now pending in the Putnam County Circuit Court.
DEATH OF A FORMER WELL-KNOWN CITIZEN OF TERRE HAUTE.—Through Gov. Newton Booth, of California, intel litience has been received in this city of the death of Mr. Harry Clarke, formerly a well-known resident of this city, which sad event took place in California about one month since.
We shall always recollect Hariy Clark, for he was one of the most jovial, iHnd hearted, merry, laughing, good natured men we ever knew. Who that lived in Terre Haute twenty-fiye years ago, does not recollect how his hearty, out-gushing laugh would ring out* and echo alwg the north side of the Court House Square, when, at the end of a good joke or a happy hit, he gave vent to the joyousness of his nature. v.
In those days every person liked Harry Clark. He was the very embodiment offUn,and seemed to enjoy it more than anyone else whom we recollect. If he was as happy during the remainder of his life as he was when he lived here twenty-five years ago, his life must have been a sunny one, and his advent into another world can be nothing else but glorious.
THIS city is getting to be quite a point for show priuting. This office has at present orders for work for the Raukin Comedy Company for Louisville, Nash ville, Mobile and Memphis, also has all the programmes for Van Amburgh's great show for the remaiuder of the season, amounting to a large job for this city. No branoh of business in this city is so well represented as printing. We have several very fine job offices, and the proprietors have the energy and enterprise to keep op with the times. Work is being done here as well and as cheaply as in any of the larger cities, and the money kept at home so that &U may have ft chancy »t it.
THE surveying party engaged on the line of the proposed Cincinnati & Terre Haute Railroad are at work to-day about twelve miles west of Bowling Green
DB. READ is now engaged in fencing the lot on the southeastern corner of the square fronting the Terre Haute House, preparatory to the building of a fine residence.
THE Prairie City Guards will give a Festival at Dowling Hall on Monday evening next. The entire proceeds are to be given to the sufferers by the Chicago fire. Of course our citizens will all buy a ticket, whether they can attend or not. Tickets $1.00.
A STRIKING EVIDENCE of the advance of science and civilization in our country is the prompt and decisive steps taken in large cities to prepare for the expected and almost certain coming of the cholera, But a few years ago the only efforts made to escape its ravages, was by all who were able, taking safety in flight, leaving those who were too poor to leave, to care for themselves as best they could When it did come, the result was fearful and its victims were numbered by thou sauds. Now, however, the matter is left in the hands of the authorities, and the people rest in perfect confidence that all is right. ..
In our section ofcountry diseasemakes its appearance each and every year, and no efforts of our authorities can arrest its progress. The seeds of malaria are planted in its unhappy victims and bring forth abundant fruit, ague in every shape (billiousness, torpid liver, head ache, chills and fever, intermittent fever) appears, and thousands suffer for months, until the appearance of frost when the cause being removed, the effect at once ceases. Barr's Ague Medi cine will remove the cause from the sys tem as certainly as frost, and may be obtained now at every drug store in the land.
