GREAT FINANCIAL EXCITEMENT.
Reports from Various Insurance Companies. From a gentleman of this city, who was in Cincinnati during the prevalence of the great conflagration at Chioago, we learn that the excitement was of the most intense character among all classes, but more especially among those heavy capitalists who had investments in the Northwestern metropolis, includinginsur* ance men of all ranks, from the President and other officers of the companies down to the local agents of the companies sustaining heavy losses.
The Merchants Exchange building, board ot Trade Rooms, newspaper and telegraph offices were crowded full of anxious people, upon whose countenances were pictured financial disaster and bankruptcy, all of whom were greedily devouring all the news that appeared on the various bulletin boards. Upon the streets extras from various newspaper establishments were sold by hundreds by urchins who reaped a harvest of nickels, gratifying to them no doubt.
Telegraph dispatches from New York and other cities report similar excitement Below we give some of the dispatches received ip our city and elsewhere from the heads or representative of varioud insurance companies, which speak for themselves:
President Savage, of the International, telegraphs from New York, that hi* company will pay every cent of the Chicago lo8.-es at once, and aid the sufferers ia other ways.' :r tCWHKrttt"*-!!*
Races..—The races at the Fair Grounds yesterday were attended by a smtflT, but enthusiastic crowd. Not more than half dozen ladies were in attendance, as the weather was too cold for comfort. The first trot for the $1,000 purse, mile heats, best three in five, was Von by Sam. McDonald's "Burlington." The time was 2:46^, 2:46}, 2:47$, 2:46^.
In the second race, Joe. Yaternaitted b. m. "Lucy," and Pat. Tully named g. m. "Silver Tail." This race caused9a tfreat-deai of amusement, and was not very fast. The first heat the horses got off very nicely, but it was soon seen that "Pat." had if all his own way. The horses were so long getting around that there talk of sending out a party to .see what had. become of them. The judges waited patiently, however, and fibally heard the well-known voice of "Joe." in imitation of "gissell," apd

IN order to get reliable information in relation to the present condition of affairs, and the damage sustained by the 'great fire at Chicago, we have dispatched our city editor to the scene, who will send specials for the GAZETTE to-morrow, and write the whole matter up in full.
A STRIKING EVIDENCE of the advance of science and civilization in our country is the prompt and decisive steps taken in large cities to prepare for the expected and almost certain coming of the cholera. But a few years ago the only efforts made to escape its ravages, was by all who were able, taking safety in flight, leav ing those who were, too poor to leave, to care for themselves as best they could. When it did come, the result was fearful, and its victims were numbered by thousands. Now, however, the matter is left in the hands of the authorities, and the people rest in perfect confidence that all is right.
In our section of country disease makes its appearance each and every year, and no etlorts of our authorities can arrest its progress. The seeds of malaria are planted in its unhappy victims and bring forth abundant fruit, ague in every shape (billiousness, torpid liver, headache, chills and fever, intermittent fever) appears, and thousands suffer for months, until the appearance of frost, when the cause being removed, the effect at once ceases. Barr's Ague Medicine will remove the cause from the system as certainly as frost, and may be obtained now at every drug store in the land.
Fun Ahead!

The underisgned wishes to return his thanks to the Covenant Mutual Life In* suranee Co., of St. Louis, for their promptness in paying a policy of $2,000 on the life of his wife, who died on the 2ath day of September.
