City and Neighborhood.
THE Council convenes this evening.
BEAUTIFUL shower, that of last night.
DON'T forget that the Viennra Lady Orchestra will appear in this city Thursday evening.
"ONE of the cars of the street railroad is being repaired at the shops of the Vandalia Short Line, in this city.
SEVERAL 'residents of Chicago, who were in this city on business, as did several others, left for the city of ashes last night.
THE rain of last night has long been needed and anxiously looked for. It seemed almost a special dispensation of Providence.
PROF. MARX, the great illusionist, did not perform in Dowling Hall last evening, we presume, as we could not see any light at that place. Possibly he was waiting for Suudey night.
OF ONE crowded coach bound west fTni Tn.liananolia oypr the Vandalia

WE are informed by the advertising agent, Mr. Hughes, that Van Ambergh &Co., of the great Golden Menagerie which exhibits in this city on the 25th inst., lose about $3,300 worth of electrotype plates by the destruction of the office oi the Chicago Daily Republican iu the great conflagration.
THAT "BIG TENT."—Arrangements are being entered into with Re1?. Dr. In^iekip, of "big tent" fame, to secure that S ^mammoth concern for the purpose of »/4ising at Chicago, to accommodate the homeless from the great fire. It could not be put to better use iu the interests of
Christianity, we feel assured.
WE find in the Daily Corinne lieporter, of the 3d inst., the following: "Some one tells us that our friend and fellow townsman JohnTiernan has crossed the Rubicon of celibacy and taken to himself a wife, as every man of his fine judgment should do."
All we have to say is, that girl has succeeded in getting a first-rate fellow for a husband.
NEEDN'T WAIT.—It is said that in ancient Borne, the dearest friend of a dying person, received by a kiss his soul, as it escaped through the lips at the last exhalation, but we have changed all that nowadays, and any young lady can bear witness that you needn't wait for a friend to die to receive all of his Mspirit" that you care to receive by a kiss.
PERSONAL.—W. G. Nevin, Esq., re turned from Baltimore last evening He came from Springfield, Ills., via the Toledo, Wabash & Western Railroad to LaFayette, and reports the entire country inflames last afternoon.
A private dispatch received in this city last evening, states that the residence of Judge Gookins, well-known in this city, is in ashes, uiid the Judge and &mily houseless
H. C. Vaughn, a prominent insurance agent of St. Louis, was ia the city last evening, stoppiug at the Terre Haute House." .. ..
Citizens' Meeting.
The great fire at Chicago is the allabsorbing topic of conversation on our streets to-day, as it was yesterday, and us is the case throughout the length and breadth of the laud. Last eveuinga car lead of provisions were sent to the destitute at that place by special train, over the Vandalia Short Line, by order of President McKeen, to Effingham, where it was transferred to the Illinois Central Railroad aud thence through to Chioago. Business is very much depressed here and the oity is in gloom at the tragic fate of the beatuiful metropolis of the North west.
This afternoon at two o'clock a meeting of the City Council and citizens is called by means of dodgers, which have been freely circulated about the streets. At that meetiug measures will be taken for the relief of the Chicago unfortunates on a more extensive scale than has yet been th« at**, vt report of which-wet .will furnish our readers if it can be had before time |o KO to eiore urae ip go to ppess^
Up to nooo, liofurther 11 i§patenfeshave been received from Chicago, either by the Press Association or by railroad tele.

A GREAT SPECTACLE.
Unprecedented in Modern History.
In a a ranee Companies to be Tested to Tbelr Utmost—Water Works Terre Xfante'sOnly Safeguard.
Never before in the history of this continent has there been a precedent of the scenes of fire which has just swept, and is still sweeping over the land at various points. Yesterday the great State of Wisconsin was still in a blaze, and last
night
the greatest of Western cities, the pride alike of Illinois and the mighty Northwest, Vas in ashes. Thousands and tens of thousands of her inhabitants homeless and penniless. The entire country responding to her piteous appeal for bread to stay the pangs of hunger. But a few days since the great and mighty metropolis of this Western country, in her arrogance and magnificent wealth, stood out iu bold relief as the rival of any city west of New York, the great metropolis of the Western world.
To-day the beautiful and stately pile of pallatial blocks of marble and iron buildings are crumbling in ruins, the woodwork in ashes, and the haughty millionaires of a few days ago are penniless and homeless.

world witnesses the
great spectacle of all the cities of the
union
in their common sympathy rushing to her support in this, the hour of her most terrible affliction. Petty jealousies and political animosities are laid aside, and there is no South and no North, but all is being accomplished that can be for the sufferiifc'thousands.
It behooves our people to respond to the great wants and needs of those who have so recently been relieved of all they possess in the world. This is a case where insurance, which has hitherto intervened between the fiery elements and bankruptcy, can be of little and in many cases of no avail. Of all the companies in the land there are not more than two or three that will withstand this terrible loss. There is double, yes, treble, the amount of property in ashes and ruins in Chicago, even now that the entire insur ance capital of the whole nation, Insurance on property here is but an uncertain surety against loss, did a fire break out in the city, and were the destructive scenes of the Chicago conflagration reenacted here.
one
thing certain, howeyer,
those companies which do pay their indebtedness, dollar lor dollar and cent for cent, will do the business hereafter which will place them on enduring foundations, while at the same time those irresponsible companies will be bankrupted. In other words, the fur will fly from "wild cat" companies in a manner that would even astonish the State Printer, who is in the habit of witnessing the flaying of black cats without displaying any emotion whatever.
There is but one insurance against a conflagration in this city and consequent bankruptcy, and that is water works. If the present chartered company intend to construct them, now is the time for action. If not, Jet them say so, and some company will organize that will, without further delay, proceed to the
blocks, as has been the history of Chicago. There is no safety except in immediate action.

can go into the street without being asked to stand treat at every saloon. She can stay at home in time of war, and get married again if her, husband gets killed. She can wear corsets if too thick, and other fixtures if too thin. She can get a divorce from her husband, if she sees one she likes better. She can get her husband in debt all over, until he warns the public not to trust her on his account. But all these accounts are balanced by the great facts that she can not sing bass, wear a beard, go sparking, or climb a tree."
That woman certainly is not "Vic." Woodhull, who according to her enthusiastic admirer and biographer, Theodore Tilton, can climb a tree, and of which accomplishment we do not think there is another woman in the land who envies the brazen-faced, impudent damsel.
A STRIKING EVIDENCE of the advance of science and civilization in our country is the prompt and decisive steps taken in large cities to prepare for the expected and almost certaincoming of the cholera. But a few years ago the only efforts made to escape its ravages, was by all who were able, taking safety in flight, leaving those who were too poor to leave, to care for themselves as' best they could When it did come, the result was fearful, and its victims were numbered by thou sands. Now, however, the matter is left iu the hands of the authorities, and the people rest in perfect confidence that all is right.
In our section of country disease makes its appearance each and every year, and no eflorts of our authorities can arrest its progress. The seeds of malaria are planted in its unhappy victims ind bring forth abundant fruit, ague in every shape (billiousness, torpid liver, head ache, chills and fever, intermittent fe ver) appears, and thousands suffer for months, until the appearance of frost, when the cause being removed, the effect at once ceases.
