From the Champaign (111.} Union. AN AFFINITY. A Chapter in Spiritualism. Iu a small town not far distant from our beautiful city of Champaign, there dwelt a couple who ha4 long since passed the period of youth, and were rapidly approaching that period of life known as old age. They were respectable people enough, and sensible in all things, save a belief in that most stupendous of ail hum' bugs—Spiritualism. The husband was most devout in his faith the woman was "gifted she was a medium—through her, disembodied spirits talked, and gave ghostly counsel to* tne world. It is a great thing to be a talented and gifted medium—every woman can't be one—(the Lord be praised) at last, however, this woman became dissatisfied she was borne down in ner lofty flights—she was chained to all that was low, groveling—her upward career was checked in its flight tar her husband he was not her affinity. The spirits had told her—in her heart she felt it. Why shojld she be thus trammelled? She would not be. Obeying the impulse of her soul, revealed from spirits from the other world, she would free herself from the galling fetters that bound her. She would find her affinity—some one whose rapport was In harmony with her own— the guidance of spiritual divines she must, she would heea. But there was the wicked law that bound her to a being she detested there was a loop-hole—she would get a divorce, and then—. Guided by a superhuman intelligence, she found what she sought, in the person of a respectable farmer, living some miles in the country. Ou every occasion she met him she talked of the cruelty of keeping apart those whom heaven had intended for one another. He was a iittle tinctured with the belief, and imagined that the sheeted dead did squeal and gibber in mortal ears. On one occasion he called on the medium and found h^alone. She was impressed at once she went into a trance—her eyes rolled wildly. She straightened up and in sepulchural tones began to describe a house with all its surroundings so vividly, that he at once recognized it as his own. Then said the medium "I see a woman there, and in her heart I see the flames of hell I see the devil, and hear him whispering in that woman's ear—poison! poison!! poison!!! Ha she has yielded the fatal mixture is prepared. It is in an old blue tea cup, on the third shelf in the pantry, hid behind the sugar box." Then gradually she came out of the trance, and of course knew nothing of what the spirits had told her. But the man did, he knew all about it, and he went straight home vowing he would have a divorce. He told his wife there was no use talking, they couldn't live together any longer that they evidently were not intended for each other, and a divorce he was bound to have. She said that he wouldn't and he replied that he would, and would so act, and that before witnesses, that she would be compelled to get out a divorce on the ground of cruelty. He went to work systematically, and succeeded so well, that in a short time his wife was as eager for a divorce as himself and it was finally settled that it should be obtained at the pe*t term of oourt. In the meantime the medium was in ecstacies—her husband was divorced and had married a buxom lass of eighteen, and at the next term of court her affinity would be freed froiM his odious bonds, and then everything would go lovely. In the joy of her heart she had to tell of It, aud then away it went all over town. After the farmer and his wife had agreed upon a divorce, everything went on as happily as it had in the golden days of their early married life. At last the day came for the woman to come to town—the team was at the door the old wife took one farewell Took about the dear old home where she had spent so many happy years, where her husband had welcomed her. and always so kindly, and where her children had played—her eyes were dimmed with tears aud her voice broken with emotion, as she held out her hand for a farewell clasp and a last good-bye. Said she: "When I come back I shall not be your wife: I have tried to do my best I have not always done as well as I ought, I know, but it Is all over now. Good-bye, may God bless you!"
Then was the hideous night-mare lifted from the man's' mind, aud he for the first time saw the euormity of the great crime he was about to commit, and with one bound, as her hand was on the latch, he sprang forward and caught her in his strong arms, lifting her as he would ohild, he sobbed oyer her, exclaiming, as the tears streamed down his face: "You shall not go! oh! forgive me, my wife. I loved you while young I have loved you all my life—I love you now that you are old! you must not go." She didn't go, The medium is no doubt£till |$gltUAg tot An affinity. -T i^' ,«.*.« .\v*
One's Friends.
Money can buy many things good and evil. All the wealth of the world canno$ buy you a friend, nor pay for the loss of one. "I only wanted one thing to make me happy," Haalitt writes, "out, wanting that, have wanted everything." And again "My heart, shut up in the prison house of this rude clay, has never found, nor will it ever find, a heart to speak to." We are the weakest of spendthrifts if we let one friend drop off through inattention} or let one push away another, or if we hold aloof from one for petty jealousy or heed lefts slight or roughness. Would you throw away a diamond because it pricked you One good friend is not to be weighed against the jewels of all the earth.
If there is cooln^ps or unkindness between us, let us come face to face and have out Quick, before love grows cold! "Life is too short to quarrel in/' or to carry back thoughts of friends. If I was wrong,
and
I am sorry if you, then I
am sorrier yet, for should I not grieve }. for my friend's misfortune? audi ttib mending of your faults does not He with me. But the forgiving it does, that is the happier offioe. Give me your hand and call it even.
There!

Heaven I keep my

Putting up Winter Fruit*
A correspondent writing from Knox ville, Frederick county, Maryland, requests that we inform him of the best method of putting up winter fruit. The following, taken from one of our rural exchanges, fitly answers the question reasesay to those that have winter fruit to put up, that experience has proved to me that the best way to keep and handle fruit is in bushel boxes. The last few years I have procured about as many boxes as I bad bushels of winter fruit. I take the boxes to the trees in picking time, and lay the fruit from the trees into them until full then put on the lids and haul carefully, and pile them in tiers in my cellar, from floor to ceiling. In this way I can put a larger quantity of fruit in less room and with lpsp Ipbor than in any other manner and I find that the fruit not getting bruised in handling keeps so better than it does in bins or piles, to more than pay the expense of the boxes. If good boxes are procured, they will do to use for many years. I estimate toe saving of frtiit and labor to be, by this method, at least 25 per cent.

So said the great Dr. I Clutterback. Very many persons know the*J operation of croton oil when placed upon the*** tongue, to say the least, it is speedy. Badly
deficient
in liis knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumptlon, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affectionsof the air passages still he left but few words concerning their treatment. The young-
physician to-day knows better how to man-
age any one of these chest troubles he knows the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of the many potent agents which enter Into the com- ,fv blnatlon of Edward Wilder-* Compound Extract qf Wild Cherry, and knows that with the use 01 ^. is a I a 0 1 the situation. He has no fear in the presence ol 1 v,v croup, no misgivings at the advance of bronchitls he grapples wtth consumption, and sub- is dues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Hence every family should always have this invaluably medicine at hand.

It Is self evident tha the different forms of ihdigestfori are to» be met by corresponding methods of cure. It ,i has been said tha,t the perfection of medleal skill is the talent of applying to each Individ-^ ual case its precise and as it were, its indi fldual cure. This Is the object which every conscientious physician pursues unceasingly, and never can rest satisfied until he has overtaken. Edward Wilder'*Stomach Bitter*, their body beings' the purest of copper-distilled whisky, makes this object attainable alike to all..
