Lay your finger on your pulse, and know that at every stroke some immortal passes to li is Maker—some fellow being crosses the river death—and if we think of it. we may well wonder that it should ue so long before our turn comes.

Half of all who live die before seventeen. Only one person in ten thousand lives to be one hundred years old, aud but one in a hundred reaches sixty.

The married live longer than the single. There is one soldier to every eight persons, and out of every thousand born only ninety-five weddings take place.

If you take a thousand persons who have reached seventy years, there are of Clergymen, orators and public speakers 43

From the Indianapolis Evening News. A SOLEMN JOKE.

The Coroner Perpetrates a Witticism The Coroner, the world over, is in most instances, a solemn man, as grave as a iirst-class undertaker. The nature of his work is such as not to cultivate a lively demeanor or extreme felicity or volatility of spirits. Coroner Hedges, however, has been revived by the flavor of Alaska that has crept into the atmospheric breeze of late, and with charming solemnity stole in the wee sma' hours a march on the journalistic expounders of this city. .Some remarks and strictures having been made as to the secret part of the investigation, in the sewer cases he was watching his chance to do something in the way of an inquest that should be as open and free as Colfax's stereotyped smile. »So, that when the body of the unfortunate brakeman, George Hoard, was brought to his ofTice, he made a salient exhibition of wit of the empanneling of a jury composed of newspaper men and quill-driving Bohemians. Constable Tom Wilson was dispatched with warrants for the respective and respectable jurors, and he served them in a manner that was very pleasant to see. He has a way of doing unpleasant things in such a facetious sort of a spirit that reminds an interested spectator of a dentist digging into the dephts of your jaw after a decayed molar snag. Constable Wilson found Enos B. Reed, of the People, engaged in settling the type for an able poetic squib, written by his own hands He turned upon the minion of the law with his exceeding affability, and responded that "he'd be there"—his face and head reflecting that gorgeous hue that a field of Norway oats turns back to the setting sun on the bright autunmal eve. William B. Vickers, of the Mirror, was caught surveying his form in the show windows of Washington street stores, while, with a leisure pace he meandered thoughtfully along. Ben. D. House, of (he Journal of Commerce, was discovered in a meadow near Stringtown, listening en rapport to the joyous lay of an early woodpecker. When he appeared at the Coroner's office his poetic features had lengthened out into the plainest kind of blank verse. The other empanelled three appeared with copies of the morning papers sticking out of their coat appendages, having scanned them in vain for an item worth spreading before the public in the afternoon journals of the city. That "light, airy, and attractive" hearse stood in front of the office and an occasional glance at its handsome appearance relieved the monotony of waiting for the verdict. It was reached at last, and a sly twinkle was discerned in the southeast corner of the Coroner's eagle eye as the caravan of the released six left'the office.

These statements are very instructive. Farmers and workmen do not arrive at good old age as often as the clergymen and others who perform no manual labor but this is owiug to the neglect of the laws of health, inattention to proper habits of life in' eating, drinking, sleeping, dress, and the proper care of themselves after the work of the day is done. These farmers or workmen eat a heavy supper of a summer's day and sit around the doors in their shirt sleeves, and in their tired condition and weakened circulation are easily chilled, laying the foundation for diarrhea, bilious colic, lung fever or consumption.

A LETTER to the Chicago Times gives the following as an incident on the Union Pacific Railroad "Do you see that pretty woman in there?" asked the naturalist of the Baptist deacon, pointing to a well-dressed, modest-appearing lady, who was eating with the other passengers at oue of the feeding stations. "Yes, what of her?" "Oh, nothing, only I'll bet you a new hat that I'll go in and kiss her*" "That's nothing. Anybody cau kiss a woman." "Yes, but I never saw her before. I'll agree, if she makes any fuss about it, to pay for the hat." "Don't you kuow her, honest?" "Upon my word!" "Never saw her before?" "Never,so help me!" "It's a bet." "Agreed! Now, watch me!"

The naturalist walked deliberately up to the lady, put his face down to hers, and then kissed her squarely ou the cheek. To the infinite surprise of the Baptist deacou she did not hit him with .a water pitcher, or holler "murder!" She simply glanced up at him, blushed a little, aud went ou with her eating. Is the naturalist among women what

Rarey is among horses? was the mental inquiry of the Baptist deacon, in connection with the probable price in coin of a $7.50 hat in San Francisco.

A CERTAIN eminent temperance lecturer was setting forth the most awful portraiture of King Alcohol, wheu a muzzylooking brother arose in a corner of the hall and observed: "Iliket'ash the gent'l'm'n aquesh'n." "Certainly, my friend," said the urbane speaker, "by all means." "I wish t'inquire of tl he's ever been tight?' •'Thank God, no!" was the fervent response. "This brain has never been muddled with the accursed thiug." .Once more the muzzy one spoke: ••Then don't the gen'l'm'n seem to

the gent'l'm'n 'f

great Pmaliarity 'bout an entire stranger, s' long's he hain't been introduced?" The speaker had to struggle for some moments before hejcould circumvent the unseemly interruption, and get back to the thread of his disrespect. You see he did not know whereof he affirmed.

THREE of the dirtiest, most ragged little ragamuffins in New York city entered one of its most magnificent drug stores, and, marching up to the counter, one said "I want a cent's worth of rock candy." "Get out, you ragamuffin we don't sell a cent's worth of rock candy."

Slowly and sadly they filed out of the store. On the sidewalk a consultation took place. They re-entered the defar. "Mister, do you sell three cents' worth of rock candy "Yes." "Well, we ain't got 'em and the procession, moved out again.

upon the pit of the stomach of a child, •will cause the bowels to be emptied, and alloes kept in contact with a raw surface will produce saxne effect as if the medicine had been taken into the stomach. So sajd the great Dr. Clutterback. Very many persons know th§ operation of croton oil when placed upon the tongue, to say the least, it is speedy. Purgatives in some~shaje, are indispensable in tha practice of medicine. Many diseases are incurable without them and all of the simple disorders of thesystem are benefitted by their use. The great desideratum in their administra. tiou lias been to get one which has either laxa tive or purgative, as was needed—always mild but always efficient^aud the use of which did not make it necessary to continue its use. Thi has at last been done. EDWARD

fulfill all the requirements of the

case. They area laxative, yet sure purgative, yet mild. In small doses, they meet the first want in large doses, they fulfill the latter but in whatever quantity given, they create no necessity for they create no morbid state of the 'alimentary canal tube, butleave it cleansed and urge it to renewed health. They are, in brief, a blessing to the individual who suffers from constipation and needs a laxative, and are indispensable to him w,ho is parched with fever and requires a purgative. Use them, all you who value health.

llelininthology.

A distinguished physiologist hasdeclared tha it seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodie should be peopled with tliem. The huge whale is often driven to inadess by an almost invisible member of the tribe of vermes. The historv of Helminthology abounds in illustrations of tho influence of worms in the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequeqey of w.orms in the bodies of men their obviousness to ,the senses, together with their common connection with en/eeljl^d and morbid states ot .tlie animal economy, a^l te^d to render tliem an objcct of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the study of these entoza with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speediiy, safely and permanently expelling them tram the human sytem. Dr. Laennec.

This renowned Frenchman did more petrhap^ to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill in detecting the nature and form of the malady before him, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affections of the air passages still he left but few words concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better how to manage any one of these chest troubles he knows the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of the, many potent agents which enter into the combination of Edward Wtiders Compound Extract of Wild Cherry, and knows that with the use 01 this truly great medicine he is fully master

to wormwood,

the situation. He has no fear in the presence of croup, no misgivings at the advance of bronchitis he grapples wtth consumption, and subdues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Hence every family .should always have this invaluable mediciq£.s£ Jjand.
