From the New York World Hept. 13. THE TORPEDO TERROR.
"icc Tiling for Hie Ciiioiniiiit Market— ]{xe.s for Clitciiiiiftti Exyiotle in 'ew York With Fatal Results. ly ti:e tr.ifHc in a forbidden and dangerous article of pyrotechnics a terrible explosion occurred in the crowded business thoroughfare of Beckmsin street, near Fulton Market, which has already resulted in the almost instant death of three person, and the horrible mangling and probable death of several others. A faint idea may be formed ol the terrific ]):Ave'r of the explosion when it is known that for blocks around buildings vvvre shaken as by an earthquake, windows completely 'shuttered ajnd passers-by dashed prone on the street sidewalk In the city the greatest excitement pr"vniled, and the tragic occurrence formed the sole topic of conversation last night.
Yesterday afternoon, about 1:15, a twohorse truck, heavily loaded with boxes, drove up in front of the establishment of Messrs. Klueber & Goldschmidt, dealers in all kinds of fireworks at 12U liuekman street and commenced unloading. !So ordinary an occurrence attracted little or no attention except from persons who found it ditbeuit to pass on the obstructed sidewalk, and even they did not dream that the contents of the harmless looking cases were prepared, at the slightest jar, to hurl death and destruction in all directions. While the driver was engaged in transferring the boxes from the truck to the walk a boy named Henry Brown was engaged in scraping oil the old marks, and Mr. (ioldschmidt was marking them for reshipment to J. L. Warren, Cincinnati, Ohio. All the neighboring tradesmen were attending to their usual avocations or just returning from their noontide lunch in Fulton Market, the usual throng was passing to and from the ferries, and all the doorways leading to the upper floors were occupied by little childreb happy in their sports.
At 1:30 a Bleeckerstreet car filled with passengers came down the street and halted for an instant in front of the truck till the driver ascertained that he bad sullicieut room, then passed on to the corner of (South street. Ac this instant the truck and its contents disappeared in a cloud of smoke, accompanied hy an explosion that shook the adjacent buildings to their very foundations. Persons parting were dashed to tlie ground or blown into open stores windows and doors were hurled from their fastenings for Mocks around, and houses rocked to and fro to such an extent that theiroccupants, wild witii terror, dashed into the street and sought safety in flight. The great explosion was followed by a rattle, as if small arms, caused by unexploded torpedoes falling upon the street on their return from their journey shyward. For a lew moments a suli'ocating cloud of dust and smoke hung like a pall over the street, but as it slowly swept away the full extent of the disaster was revealed. The crushed and mutilated body of the driver was found lying on an iion awning, while the sidewalk was .strewn with the dead and dying, whose groans and cries for help were agonizing in the extreme. The fronts of the stores 12-1 and 120 Beekman street were a complete wreck, all the woodwork having disappeared, and the only tiace remaining of the heavy wooden awning was the tin covering, which, torn and twisted, had been thrown to each side. The boxes had utterly disappeared Hlong with their explosive contents, and hut a few fragments of lie truck remained. The hubs and spokes were but amass of splinters, and even the felloes were riven from the tire. One of the springs was driven across the street, through a tin leader, and lodged iirmly in the brickwork of a dwelling house. The step of the truck made a flying excursion through the window of a store opposite, and passed unpleasantly near the head of the bookkeeper. Dozens of persons met with hair-breadth escapes, and after a view of the surrounding destruction it seems truly wonderful that the loss of life was not much larger. The appearance of the street gave abundant evidence of the territic force of the explosion, as it was strewn with fragments of the neighboring woodwork for nearly four blocks. Strange to say, the horses attached to the truck were not killed, although terribly wounded, one having portion of his head torn off, and both of them exhibiting wounds which appeared as if portions of the truck several inches in diameter had been driven into their bodies. Nothing could be done for their relief except to send for President Bergh and ascertain his opinion as to the propriety of terminating their existence. It was ascertained that the truck was loaded with forty cases, containing a total of one hundred thousand Union torpedoes. Mr. Klueber, of the firm was not in town, and was reported to be at Kast New York engaged in the manufacture of the deadly iorpedoes.
The ageuts of such terrible destruction are what is known as "Uuuion torpedoes." In size they resemble a boy's marble, and are composed of an explosive material covered with clay, hard to the touch and painted with two darkblue stripes over the dingy brown of the elav. On being struck against a wall, the flags, or hit with a hammer, they explode with a detonation as equally loud as the discharge of an ordinary pistol, and in cousequence are much in vogiie on the Fourth of July and kindred occasions. They were first introduced into this city two years ago, the deadly invention of a German fire-work manufacturer, then living in Eivington street. Soon alter their introduction the attention of the authorities was directed to them, owing to the frequency of fatal accidents cons?quent on their use. The Board of
1
Health called the matter to the attention of the police authorities, and the officers of the force were directed to preveut the sale of the deadly playthings. Immediately upon the establishment of the Combustible Bureau of the Fire Department, Union torpedoes were particularly denominated as dangerous, and their sale or manufacture prohibited. The explosive compound used iu their manufacture is said to embrace the three most powerful explosive agents known to science, viz: Pierate of potash, nitroglycerine and fulminate of mercury. Accidents from the use or keeping of these torpedoes have been very frequent. Last summer a store in Washington street stocked with them was blown to atoms, and only a few juooths since a poor little girl in Wil-'
lialrisburjr, thinking onv to lie a chocolate ^iigtir plum, a.natural mistake, put it in her mouth and her head was blown to atoms. These torpedoes are packed ill sawdust, ten of them in a small past board box. Ten of these boxes are packed in ii larger box, and twenty-five of the latter constitute a case, in which they are shipped. The cases are generally made of inch pine, and -are about two feet in length, two feet^ high and a foot in diameter. Twenty-five hundred torpedoes are thus inclosed in one case, and an idea of the force of the explosion may. readied when it is considered that there were about forty of these cases on the truck and sidewalk, giving a total of one hundred thousand torpedoes.

upon the pit of the stomach of a child, will cause the bov/els to be emptied, and alloes kept in contact vrlth a raw surface will produce same effect as If the niftdicinehad been taken into the stomach. So said the great Dr. Clutterback. Very many persons know the operation of croton oil when placed npon the tongue, to say the least, it is speedy. Purgatives in some sha e, are indispensable in the practice of medicine. Many diseases are incurable without them and all of the simplfe disorders of the system are benefitted by their use. The great desideratum in tlieii administra tion has been to get one which has either laxa tiveor purgative, as was needed—always mild but always efficient—and the use of which did not make it necessary to continue its use. Tlii liasat last been done.
Edward Wildkk's FaM-
fulfill all the requirements of the
case. They arc a laxative, yet sure purgative, yet mild. In small doses, they meet the first want: inlarge doses, they fulfill tbe latter but in whatever quantity given, they create no necessity for thov create no morbid state of the alimentary canal tube, butleave it cleansed and urge it to renewed health. They are, iu brief, a blessing to the individual who sutlers from constipation and needs a laxative, and are Indispensable to him who is parched witli fever and requires a purgative. Use tbein, all you who value health.

A distinguished physiologist liasdeclared that it seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodie should be peopled with them. The huge whale is often driven tomadessbyan almost invisiblo member of the tribe of vermes. The liistorv of Helinintliology abounds in illustrations of tha influence of worms in the production of diseaso and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of men their obviousness to the senses, together wit^i their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states ol the aniinal economy, all tend to render them an object of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to tbe study of these entoza with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedily, safely and permanently expelling them trom the human sytem.

This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseaBesthon any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill in detecting the nature and form ot the malady before him, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all theaffectionsof the air passages still he left but few words concerning their treatment, live youngest physician to-day knows better how to manage any one of these chest troubles he knows the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of tlie many potent agents which enter into the combination of hklward" Wilder* Compound Extract of Wild Cherry, and knows that'with the use 01 thfs truly great medicine he is fully master oi the situation. Indigestion,
'Which makes sleep a pain, and turps its balm to wormwood,' is, we all know, the most, common of all disorders of the stomach. It is also the mo obstinate. It has been the mo6t written about No disease presents such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency, which regulate natural events they bother the doctor, and can only be read by him who is skilled in thebookof nature. It is self evident tha the different forms of indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has been said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying to each individual case its precise and adit were, its iudivldual cure. This is the object which every conscientious physician pursues unceasingly, and never can rest satisfied until he has overtaken, toward Wilder'a Stomach Bitters, their body being the purest of copped distilled whisky, makes this object attainable alike to oil.
