BIUGrHAM
YOUNG.
The Salt Lake Tribune says: "As there were hundreds of persons present who knew these statements to be incorrect, it is probable the discourse did more to weaken than strengbten confidence in the reliability of the 'prophet.' -We couid fill every column of this paper with details of cases wherein the advice of Brigham Young, implicitly followed, resulted in the utter pecuniary ruin of his dupes while the instances of domestic happiness wrecked by obeying his orders are too numerous and too painful to mention. These sad experiences cannot be exposed without unwarrantable invasion into the sacred precincts of family life but that Brigham's hand is the one that placed the hideous skeleton in these once happy homes cannot be denied. It is of matters less privately than these that we would speak—cases of financial ruin produced by following the advice of this 'prophet,' this 'representative of the Almighty,' this man who sets himself up as infallible and so numerous are these cases, we scarce know which to mention first but will venture to remind His Infallibility of an old man who, in 1862, owned fine farm, well stocked, at Mill Creek. He was in prosperous circumstances, was accumulating property, and had all the comforts of a happy home, free of debt. This man was directed by Brigham Young to break up his home, and engage in raising cotton on the Rio Virgin. The poor dupe obeyed his master, and the result was that he is now in the depths of poverty. His first wife has been compelled to leave him on account of his inability to support the family while his children, clothed in rags, and often suffering for food, are growing to maturity without schooling, and in a condition but little better than that of the diggers who occupied the locality before Brigham ordered the faithful to go there and 'make the wilderness blossom like the rose.'
Another case, very similar, is that of a man who resided in the Fourteenth Ward of this city, a hale, hearty man in the prime of life, possessing a splendid property, and doing a profitable business, trading and freighting, with surplus means so invested as to yield fi fine income. He also was sent by the "prophet" on the Rio Virgin mission, and located in the town of St. George, where his property gradually melted away his spirits first, then his health failed, and finally he became too poor to support his family, and that also was broken up. In remarkable contrast with this case is that of a prominent banker of this city, who refused to follow the advice of Brigham, and, notwithstanding the anathemas of the "prophet," has continued to prosper and grow rich in the pursuit of his business.
A Singular Case of Female Devotion and Death. One of the most remarkable instances of woman's attachment to man and heroism under adversity, came to our notice to-day. To begin at the commencement, we will state that in I860, a young lady in the city of Auburn, New York, the daughter of wealthy parents, eloped with a young man named Niles, a railroad engineer, and both proceeded to Cleveland, Ohio, and afterward to Toledo. They were pursued by an infuriated brother of the young lady, and in the latter place, to avoid detection, after the marriage ceremony bad been performed, the young lady arrayed herself iu male attire. In this disguise, and while selling apples, she passed her brother several times on the street without recognition on his part. Shortly afterward, early in the war, the two went south to Nashville, Tenn., where Niles procured employment as a locomotive engineer, his wife engaging as fireman, still keeping up her disguise. Between Nashville and Chattanooga a shot from a rebel inflicted a serious wound upon the engiueer, and he was taken to the government hospital at Murfreesboro, Tennessee. His wife followed, and to her careful nursing Niles owes his life. When sufficiently recovered to endure the hardships of travel, they returned to Cleveland. A few months later the alleged gold discoveries at Mandock, Canada, attracted them thither, and the wife accompanied her husbaud, still in masculine garments. The vicissitudes of her career, exposed to hardships and accidents, were too severe, however, and a few weeks since she died at Cleveland, after a brief illness. Niles, who is now in this city, is a man of about forty years of age, and does not refer to the heroic devotion of his wife but in terms of the warmest admiration .—Oshkosh Northwestern.
Ricli Without Money.
Many a man is rich without money. Thousands of men with nothing in their pockets, and thousands without even a pocket, are rich. A man born with a good sound constitution, a good stomach, a good heart, and good limbs and a pretty head piece, is rich. Good bones are better than gold, tough muscles than silver, and nerves that flash fire and carry energy to every function, are better than houses or lands.
It is better than landed estate to have had the right kind of father ajid mother. Good breeds and bad breeds exist among *i£men as among herds and horses. Education may do much to check evil tenden-

His Waning Influence—The Elder's moan It in the Tabernacle. In the Mormon Tabernacle, Salt.Lake City, on Sunday, August 27, Elder Cannon alluded to the growing disposition of the people to disregard the advice of President Young, and he spoke of the "Prophet" as one whose counsel had ever been for their good. He continued that it had been said that the people are blindly led by one man. They are in fact led by the same power by which the "Prenident" is led—the Spirit of God but the "President" is less liable to err, and, therefore, it is safer for the people to rely upon him than upon themselves, and they ought to obey him and be led by him. President Brigham Young then made a discourse, and Elder Cannon having introduced the subject, he said he would to God the people were led by him, and would obey him in all things. If they did, it would be better for them. He assured them, as he had a hundred times before, that if they always followed his advice they would be benefitted, and he defied anyone to mention an instance wherein any of the "Saints" had been injured by following his advice

faculties to start with. The man is rich who has a good dispo* sition—who is naturally kind, patient, cheerful, hopeful, and who hasa flavor of wit and fun in his composition. The hardest thing to get along with in this life is a man's own self. A cross, selfish fellow, a timid, care-burdened man these are all born deformed on the inside. Their feet may not limp but their thoughts do.
The Cleveland
Herald, desiring to be
poetical on the occasion of the Scott Cen tennial, quoted: "Caledonia, stern and wild,

And the compositor set it up "Caladonia, stern and wild, "Wet nurse for a poetic child."

MEDICAL.
A Cataplasm of Rhubarb.
LAID
upon the pit of the stomach of a child,1 will cause the bowels to be emptied, and alloes kept in contact with a raw surface willproduce same effect as if the medicine had been taken into the stomach. So said the great Dr. Clutterback. Very many persons know the operation of croton oil when placed upon the tongue, to say the least, it is speedy. Purgatives in some shaje, are jndispensable in the practice of medicine. Many diseases are incurable without them and all of the simple disorders of the system are benefitted by their use. The great desideratum in their administra tion has been to get one which has either laxa tive or purgative, as was needed—always mild but always efficient—and the use of which did not make it necessary to continue its use. Thl has at last been done.

fulfill all the requirements of the
case. They area laxative, yet sure purgative, yet mild. In small doses, they meet the first want in large doses, they fulfill the latter, but in whatever quantity given, they create no necessity for they create no morbid state of the alimentary canal tube, butleave it cleansed and urge it to renewed health. They are, in brief, a blessing to the individual who suffers from constipation and needs a laxative, and are indispensable to him who is parched with fever and requires a purgative. Use them, all you who value health.
Helminth ology.
A distinguished physiologist has declared that It seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodle should be peopled with them. The huge whale Is often driven to madess by an almost invisible member of the tribe of vermes. The historv of Helmintliology abounds in illustrations of the influence of worms In the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of men their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states ot the animal economy, all tend to render them an object of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the study of these entoza with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedily, safely and permanently expelling them trom the human sytem.

Br. Laenncc.
This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill in detecting the nature and form of the malady before him, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affections of the air passages still he left but few words concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better how to manage any one of these chest troubles he knows the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he. is aware of the many potent agents which enter into the combination of Edward Wilder's Compound Extract of Wild Cherry, and knows that with the use oi this truly great medicine he is fully master oi the situation. He has no fear in the presence ot croup, no misgivings at the advance of bronchitis he grapples wtth consumption, and subdues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Hence every family should always have this invaluable medicine at hand.
Indigestion,
'Which makes sleep a pain, and turns its balm to wormwood," is, we all knaw, the most, common of all disorders of the stomach. It is also the mo obstinate.

is the object which every conscien
tious physician pursues unceasingly, and never can rest satisfied until he has overtaken. Edward. Wilder1s Stomach Bitters, their body being the purest of copper-distil led whisky, makes this object attainable alike to all. They area specific—the disease specifying the remedy, not the remedy the disease. They are a combination of substances which meet the speciality ot the disorder by a corresponding speciality ot cure. They should be kept in every well-regur lated family they are indispensable to health^

The British army when it advanceu on Talavara and fought the celebrated battle, which was followed by a retreat into the plains^ lost more men by the malarial diseases contracted on the banks of the Gaudiana than by the bullets of the enemy. They died by thousands All Europe believed that the invading army was extirpated. Yet malaria diseases are no more common in Europe than in oui' own country they exist throughout the length and breadth of our land—^everywhere at some time, and in some shape are we made to feel the sickening influence of miasm. The three gres actors in this equation of disease are solar heat, moisture, and vegetable decomposition. The trio, if separated, are harmless together they are more potent for evil than any other known ,j agents so long as they exist, Just so long will we have need of a medicine which will overcome their pernicious effects, so long will it be necessary 10 have a remedy capable of meeting and beating the insidious enemy. Of all known agents for this purpose, none is to compare with Edward WUder's ChiU Tonic, the master of every form aud variety and grade and degree of malarial disease and of miasmatic poison. Try it, all you who are suffering from any form of ague and fever or chills and fever, as a cure is guaranteed in every case.

considerable portion of the building is
set 8part tor patients suffering with diseases of the skin, and every patient, old or young, is taking potash In some shape, and Honduras sarsaparilla in some form. They were esteemed by the renowned physicians who had charge of the skin department as well-specific in almost every variety of cutaneous disease, whether of rheumatic or scrofulous or simple origin. They $ were given in tetter, ringworm, nettle-ash, roseash.'pimpleB, scrofula, ulcers, old sores, falling of the hair, etc. In all they did good, in most they effected a cure. But it has remained for Edward Wilder1sSarsaparilla and Potash to perform the most remarkable cures awarded to any known medicine. It possesses virtues shared by no other combination of these substances. It Is a therapeutic marvel. Against all the diseases at which it is aimed it is simply resistless it "Sever fails. See to it that you suffer not one day longer with any of the ills which it cures.
