A HORRIBLE MONSTER.

Eating a Raw Chicken—Swallowing a Live Duck.

JACKSON, August 25.—A great deal has been said in our local papers lately about the wonderful and unnatural appetite of the boy William Henry Forbes, now confined in the jail in this city, and to-day your reporter availed himself of the opportunity presented to witness an exhibition of the boy's capacity. The fete, disgusting enough, I assure you, was nothing less than the eating of a chicken raw. Quite a crowd assembled in the jail barn to see the sight, which was literally performed. A live chicken and a knife were placed in the boy's hands, when the revolting operation commenced. The chicken was laid on the floor and held down between the boy's knees, while he sawed the head oft with the knife. The boy then placed the bleeding neck in his mouth and deliberately sucked the warm blood fiom the body. He then began tearing the skin from the body, which proved quite a difficult task, at the same time, a sort of pastime, chewing pieces of the skin which had been partly denuded of the feathers. Then beginning wfth one leg,

the disgusting lunch was begun. I say lunch, for it was 3 o'clock in the afternoon, and the boy had already eaten three men's rations for his dinner. After finishing both legs, he stopped long enough to remove the entrails, when he proceeded to finish the chicken. The fact of his eating the chicken in this way was no less surprising than his manner during the performance. He stood in the middle of the floor, apparently regardless of the lookers on, or of their jokes, his whole attention seemingly engaged in what he was doing, and his inhuman meal was also eaten with evident relish. Onecould think of nothing to liken him to more fitting than a dog gnawing his bone, the glare of the eye as he occasionally glanced at one most forcibly suggesting the similarity. The capacity of this boy's stomach is prodigious. He is regularly fed an ajlo^ance sufficient for three men at each meal. He dispatched at one meal, one day, twenty seven &ood sized potatoes, besides meaC and bread in proportion. For dinner yesterday he ate three quarts of soup, and tollowed that up with one pound of raw steak, and one and a half pounds of raw mutton. He will take apiece of bread five or six incheslong, with a thick crust on it, and begin at one end to cat it, and never take it away from his mauth till he lias swallowed it all. Of eggs he will eat any quantity, preferring them raw, shells and all. He will take them in his mouth and chew them up and spit the shells out after swallowing the contents.

While eating the chicken, in reply to some question, he said he once swallowed a young duck alive, and no one doubted the statement after seeing him. Iq conversation the boy appears quite intelligent. He is nearly fifteen years old, but is not larger than a boy at twelve, and has a hungry, wolfish expression, which creates the impression that he has been starved at some period of his life. He was taken from the poor house about six years ago by Ira Gavi^t, a farmer in the township of Summitt, and at that time ate no more than ordinary boys of his age. He was brought into notice by the arrest of Gavitt, on complaint of his neighbor, for abusing this boy. Gavitt claims that he was obliged to shut the boy up or keep him chained, as he would eat all the eggs and chiokens unless restrained. The boy will sav nothing against Gavitt or his family. He will not admit that they ever abused him, but on the contrary appears to thiufc a good deal of, them. Whether this is true, or the mere effect of their training, will doubtless be known when Gav»tt comes to trial next week. An external examination of the body shows that his stomach is inordinately developed which must be the case, if it hold all he eats. The boy says" he is hungry all the time.^ After finishing his own meals at the jail, he eats all the other prisoners leave, even to the last crumb. Th6 case is one well worthy the attention of the medical fraternity. The boy was putf in jail on a charge of stealing, but really to get him out of Gavitt's hands. He ought to be Bent to the House of Correction or the Reform School, where he can receive good medical treatment, as there can be no doubt that his terrible appetite is a disi ease. He was asked if he could eat a baby, and he replied Jie could if he should try, and that he came very near it ouce. It is said he attacked a boy on one occasion, telling him he" must kill him to get his blood, for he must have blood. Every feature of the lad bespeaks harsh treatment, and, if he has not been thg recipient of it, it is indeed hard to acoount for his appearance and habits. His hair is very white, his eyes blue, his lower jaw very square and strong, nose flat, witlj a sinister expression to his countenance: but over all is the terrible hungry look which strikes one with T)ity. He certainly ought not to be permitted to eat raw meat, or indulge nis depraved appetite, since, if he be the subject of a disease, a remedy would be more difficult to apply. We hope our officers will no longer, indulge a morbid curiosity by allowing such beastly propensities to be exercised.

•Mrs. Dr. Mary Walker and a Suspicious Old Lady. Mrs. Dr. Mary Walker having occasion to pass up the Missouri river, was interviewed at New Madrid by the editors of the

Hecord,

and in the course of the con

versation Mary related the following amusing incident of her war experience in Georgia*

I frequently tode outside our lines and visited the farm houses, where I found much destitution among the women. The men were generally absent in the Confederate army, or had fled'at our approach. I administered to a great many siok among these destitute Georgians. On one occasion I called at the house of an old lady, who was sick, and had quite a pretty voung daughter living with her. I prescribed for the old lady and furnished her with medicine and some delicacies," and gave her great and speedy relief. At her request I remained all night, and there being no vaoant bed in the house,

slept with the daughter. Soon after I was called upon to visit a very sick young man ia the same^neighborbood. By proper medical treatment and attention, be was soon convalescent, ftad I Buddeqly ijeoara* very famous id

that neighborhood. Not long- after was overtaken by night outside-the lines, and called upon the old lady for another night's entertainment. To my surprise, she seemed reluctant and hesitating, and thon said: "Look here, I'm afeared of you, I'm afeard to let you sleep with my daughter again, for I'm afeard you ain't a woman I don't beljeve any woman could know as much about doctoring as you do."

I tried to disabuse her mind of such an impression, but she only*shook her head and said "I'm afeard—I'd rather not." At length I unfastened my hair, and shaking it out on my shoulders, said: "Look there, did*you ever see a man have such hair as that? Is not. that a woman's hair?" "Oh, I don't know," said the old woman, "folks have gota curious way .of fastening ftair on their heads in these days, and maybe it is jist fastened there, I'd rather not let you sleep with-my daughter any more. You know too much for a woman."

'Which makes sleep a pain, and turns its balm to wormwood/' -tki v.'*7£ is, we all know, the most, common of all disorders of the stomach. It is also the mo. obstinate. It has been the most written about No disease presents such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all -j the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency, which regulate natural events they bother tho doctor, and c«m only be read by him who is skilled in the book of nature. It is self evident tha the different forms of indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It bas been said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying to each individual case fts precise and as it were, its individual cure. This is the object which every conscientious physician pursues unceasingly, and never can rest satisfied untli he has overtaken. Edward' Wilder's Stomach Bitters, their body being the purest of copper-distilled whisky, makes ... this object attainable alike to all. They area specific—the disease specifying the remedy,

fulfill all the requirements of the

case. They area laxative, yet sure purgative, yet mild. In small doses, they meet the first want in large doses, they fulttll the latter but in whatever quantity given, they create no noit or he re at or id at the alimentary canal tube, but leave it cleansed and urge it to renewed health. They are, in brief, a blessing to the .individual who suffers from constipation and needs a laxative, and aie indispensable to him who is parched with fever and requires a purgative. Use them, all you who value health.

Helininthology.

A distinguished physiologist hasdeclared that it seems to be a principle of nature that evory 1 situation capable of supporting organic bodie should be peopled with them. The huge whale is Often driven tomadessbyan almost invisible member of the tribe of vermes". The historv of Helminthology abounds in illustrations of the influence of worms in the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of men their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states ol the animal economy, all tend to render them an object of interest from, the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the study of these entoza with tlie^view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedily, safely aud permanently expelling them irom the human sytem.

Dr. Laennec.

This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than. any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill in detecting the nature and form ot the malady before him, he was sadly deficient in is no of re re iv id pictures «f coughs) colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the fectionsof the air passages still he left but few words concerning their treatment. The young-_r-est physician to-day knows better how to manage any one of these chest troubles he knows' the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its Supreme virtues he is aware of the ,f. many potent agents which enter into the com- -z bination of Edward Wilder's Compound Extract of Wild Cherry, and knows that with the use or this truly great medicine he is fully master or the situation. He has no fear in the presence ot croup, no misgivings at the advance of bronchitis he grapples wtth consumption, and subdues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Henceevery, _• family should always have this invaluable medicine at hand.

The British army when it advancea on Talavara and fought the celebrated battle, which was followed by a retreat into the plains, lost.«^J more men by the malarial diseases contracted -'V-, on the banks of the Gaudiana flian by the bullets of the enemy. They died by thousands All Europe believed that the iniadingr army was extirpated. Yet malaria diseases are no^ more common in Europe than in 0111 own country they exist throughout the length and breadth of our land—everywhere at some time and in some shape are we made tp f6el the sickening influence of miasm. The three greft actors in this equation of disease are solar heat, moisture, and'vegetable decomposition. The tiio, if separated, are harmless together they are .more potent for evil than any other known agfeits so long as»they exist, just so long wU

need of a medicine which wiH over

their pernicious effects, so long will it be necessary to have a remedy capable of meeting and' beatMlg'the insidious enemy. Of ail known agents for this puriose, none is to compare With Edward WUder's ChiU 2bnc, the mister of every form aud variety and grade and degree of malariril disease and of miasmaticpoison. Try it, all you who are suffering from any form of ague and fever or chills and fever, as a cure-is guaranteed in every case. .. 't wrC-nx.
