Woinens' Little Deceits.
How many of us have called, unexpectedly upon the ladies, and found them in the most graceful positions— upon couch and chair, upon music-stool, and by the window—which they could assume in the short space of time between the news of our arrival and our actual presence Laura recliningsat full length upon the couch, in what is meant tb be ao engaging pose, with, to*- latest, novel of the day in her hand—sometimes the book up-side down, in the hurry 01 preparation. Mollie--her bead upon her hand, and her elbow upon the little table near the window, gazing very pensively and dreamily out through the panes, her poetical attitude showing off to perfection the regular features of her face, and the contour of her really pretty figureis panting with the excitement of the quick movements which have been necessary to gain her position in the required time. Anna, who is an accomplished musician—on the piano-stool, in as attractive a position as she could gain in the time and with the appliances— seemingly wondering which piece she shall try next—and Nelly, whose fascination is in her studied negligence, and who, of course, knows it—in the easy chair before the fire, with ruffled, hair, and crampled, but tight fitting dress—a pretty ensemble, but a deceitful one.
Do you really think, ladies, that we are deceived by this sort of thing—that we have not sufficient perception to see that Laura's book is upside down, and that Mollieis out of breath with her exertions, while the piano at which Anna is seatedis not opearthat necessary particular to the little scheme having beeii forgotton? Do you think that, as we gaze about the room, we cannot perceive the many signs of the hastily thrown away adjuncts of previous occupations?
We will give! you credit that, in some pf your little deceptions, you know that we knoAtf they are deceptions. You wear false hair and powder, nearly all of you some of you enamel, while others give themselves a camelesque appearance by a combination of wire and wadding. These and other such little deceptions are only nominal deceptions. We say nothing about them t® you, nor you to us but, nevertheless we know that they are deceptions, and you know that we know it. As to actual padding, you deceive us when you can, and some of you are very clever at it.
But what about your ages? This is an old grievance, which sometimes wanders from the class of "little deceits," and becomes gross injustice, as it does when you "mammas," keep your daughters at finishing schools or convents, years longer than there is any necessity for so doing, in order that they minister to your •'little deceits" about your ages. If they appeared in society as women, it would, of course, cause many comments as to the number of your summers, which would be the reverse of agreeable to your vanity. You cannot be conquerors forever. Ccesar was not, nor Napoleon, and Bismarck will fail miserably one of these days. You must step down and give place to your daughters some day why not do it honestly, and show a good example to them?

The Thiers Device.
There is a fable among the Hindoos that a thief having leen detected and condemned to die, happily hit upon an expedient which gave him hopes of life. He sent for his jailor, and told him that he had a secret of great importance which he desired to impart to the king, and when that had been done he would be prepared to die. Upon receiving this piece of intelligence the king at once ordered the culprit to be conducted into his presence, and demanded of him to know his secret. The thief rerfipd that he knew the secret of causingTrees to grow which would bear fruit of pure gold. The experiment might be easily tried, and his majesty would not lose the opportunity so, accompantecUby his prime minister, his courtiers anu his chief priests, he went with the Ihief to a spotjaelectea near the city wall, where the latter performed a series of solemn ^antations. This done, the condemned ^n produced apiece of gold, and dejred that if it should be planted it luld produce a tree every brance of ich would bear gold. •But," he added, ''this must be put fa to the ground by a hand that has never been stained by a dishonest, act. My hand is not clean, therefore I pass it to your majesty."
The king took the piece of gold, but hesitated. Finally he said: "I remember, in my younger days, that I often fitcned money from my father's treasury which was not mine. I have repented of the sin but yet I hardly dare say my hand is clean. I pass it therefore, to my prime minister."
The latter, after a brief consideration, Answered: ••It were a pity to break the charm through a possible blunder. I receive taxes from the, people, and as I am exposed to many temptations, how can I be sure 1 have remained perfectly honest? I must give it to the Governor of the citadel., "No, no," cried the Governor, drawing back. "Remember that I have the serving out of pay and provisions to the soldiers. Let the high priest plant tt."
And the priest said: "You forget I have the collecting of tithes, and the disbursements for sacrifice."
At length the thief exclaimed: •'Your majesty, I think, it were better for societythat all five of us should be hanged, since it appears that not an honest man oan be found among us."
In spite of the lamentable exposure, the king laughed and so pleased was he with the thiefS cunning ^expedient, that he granted him a pardon. .. ,(v^
Abuse of Study*
Parents^ Ignorant of the "faWs oft. health, and without experience of their own in the acquisition or knowledge, are almost sure to urge their children to an injurious excess of mental labor. All around me I see lovely children who are victims of their parents' unenlightened ambition. At school from nine to two or three: .thenperhaps piano and daw ing till dark and in the evening, stud till nine or ten. What a massacre of the innocents is this! Even on Sunday they have no rest. What is rest to a schoolboy? It is not to go -to school. Nothing saves some children from utter destruction but their ceaseless rebellion against our murderous requirements.
They will not sit still in ill-ventilated rooms I They will not learn those long lessons' out of school! Th6y will not coax Excuses and holidays from their mothers. We compel them to disobey and misbehave, in order to save their lives.—Parton, in Public School Journal.

Purgatives in some shape, are Indispensable in the practice of medicine. Many diseases are incurable without them and all of the simple disorders of the system are benefitted by tlieir use. The great desideratum in their admlnlstra tion has been to get one which, has either laxa tive or purgative, as was needed—always mild but always efficient—and the use of whleh did not make it necessary to continue its use. distinguished physiologist hasdeclared that it seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting, organic bodie », should be peopled with them. The huge whale is often driven to madess by an almost invisibla member of the tribe of vermes. The history,-of Helminthology abounds in illustrations of th* influence of worms in the production pi dlyiase and iil the exasperation of their sympttans. The frequency of wdrins in the bodies of men, their obviousness to the senses, together/with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states ot the animal economy, all ten^d to render*them an object of Interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the study of these entoxa with the '•lew of discovering some substanca whi^i was chpable of speedily, safely and permanent^ expelling them irom the human sytem.
