Quite a number of those of our citizens interested in musical cultivation in our city, assembled inDowling's Hall, and were addressed by Prof. Baker, of Boston on th^ jbope of/'churpb music, and musical cialture," setting forth the object of the Institution entitled the State Conve^tvatory^ qf its trnej' and very favorable light, and presenting the claims of musical culture to the public of Terre Haute, painting in glowing terms the many benefits to accrue to our city from having such an institution in our midst, where vocal Gultiire, in all its various branches oould ie as kiccessftilly taught as in Eastern cities. In short* muting sa good, practical and instructive lecture, which'would have been to the advantage of all who feel an interest in the muBfc&l'culture of our citi2efi£.

He Was listened to with the deepest interest by those present throughout his very valuable tal& 6'f an hour's duration, at4&% felo^ of itfhieh Messrs. Jewett and Ryce made short and pithy remarks, indorsing in the warmest terms the words %f iht^R-oleslorj ilbly arid eloqtfently ad vocating the enterprise, known as the State Conservatory of Music, pledging their utmtn&* eJui«avor& and hearty cooperation in the ent^rpr|^e, .predicting for it success in the future, unlimited ^(.fTbis^jail Institution wh^h ^applies a need long felt in this community, and we hope to see it succeed to the degree commensurate with its worth, wbich will ensure for it a high degree of success.

Then let all who feel interesfed' in tli'is matter support the Institution which has just been so auspiciously established in our midst, and our best interests as a city will thus be advanced and the tastes of our people be cultivated to an appreciation of operas and concerts, and next winter, we will be favored with such entoctninments inatead.of the irrepressible burnt cork artistes and the" disgusting 'eJwrep'"''"'

The boys were laboring under the delusion that there would be a large delegation from the Indianapolis Journal office, and arrangements for their accommodation were accordingly made by providing the "straight article" of unadulterated whisky from Tom.
