THE FOURTH AT TERRE HAUTE.

Processions, Picnics, Music, Dancing, Circus, Speeches, Runaways, Fire Works, etc., etc. A Grand Occasion and a Good Time

Generally.

Yesterday, upon the occasion of the ninety-fifth anniversary of American Independence, such a celebration was had in, about and from this city, as wa§ never before known in its entire history, upon a similar occasion. It was celebrated in a manner that must indeed have been gratifying to every lover of liberty, equality and justice who witnessed it. Though we were absent at the Capital, we learn the following particulars of the manner in which the day was observed in and about the city. ,!

In the morning at an early hour the streets were thronged with people of "every age, sex and condition in life" all

Variously

prepared

to

"celebrate."

An immense mask congregated at the Union Depot, from whence they were convej^fcPBy fort^cars _oveiT thfe new and elegantE.,T. H. &C.-R. R. toPerrysville to attend a grand picnic given unde^ thet auspices of Terre Haute Typographical Union, but as a report of that from "our special" appears in another column, we will leave them at the depot, with our reporter, all surging about for conveyance tp Perrysyille, confining our report to what we heard of "the way it was observed" here.

THE YOUNG MEN'S AMULET

as previously advertised held a grand picnic at Early's Grove, to which place place marched the various Irish societies of the city, together with the Fire Department and the numerous friends of all, and the cause of universal liberty— headed by Breinig's Band, presenting a very handsome appearance, the Young Men's Amulet having previously been presented with an elegant American flag by the ladies of St. Joseph's Church, upon which occasion appropriate presentation and acceptation remarks were made,

Upon the arrival of the delegations at the grove, they were greeted with cheers and friendly greeting from many hundreds already assembled, after which short and appropriate, speeches of about twenty minutes' length were made by Messrs. Dunnigan, McLean and Voorliees, which were not and designed not to be on the.screaming spread-eagle style, but good, sensible, neighborly talks, which did much towards making^, the occasion an instructive and enjoyable one, indeed.

At the close of the speeches the general festivities always attending a celcbrfttion given by our liberty-loving Irish' American citizens were enjoyed with a hearty relish, the best of. order being observed during the

d3y,

and all return

ing to their homes in the evening well satisfied with the manner in which they had spent and enjoyed the ninetyfifth anniversary of American Independence, and, no doubt, each one cherishing in his or her heart, a hope that the day is not far distant when the now enslaved Irish people will be celebrating the anniversary of their liberties.

THE GERMANS

of the city and many friends, excursed to the Fair Ground over the old reliable Terre Haute & Indianapolis road in great numbers, attended by Prof. Vogt!s Band of Indianapolis, Lthe "cracked" band over which the Journal and Banner have been quarreling, because of the misconstruction placed upon the Journal's term of the '"crack band."] The band is indeed a splendid one, as all will testify who heard them yesterday* and the evening before when they marched from the Vandalia Depot toFishei's Beer Garden.

YFIIIKII THE GROUNDS.

The

II

day was appropriately celebrated by music, both instrumental and vocal, dancing, gymnastic and picnicing in good old Germau order. Fourteen young men Or boys were awarded premiums foF^ym^aMic^feats1* of various kinds". The attendance^ wits quite' large, as the various trains jfronct tlae. ity_ to\ £he grounds during the day were crowded, while many attended by*private conveyance. Notwithstattding the great number present, there was BQt. a single disturbance during the

entire day, and that

most enjoyable time characteristic off our German follow-e^tizens when not disturbed by meddlesome outsiders, was had by all) and the day will ever be pleasurably ^^ber^ by ,aJl ^|H

drums, squeaky voices and young cannon, wliile the atmosphere dating from the previous evening greets the nostrils with an odor not altogether pleasant for orthodox people, as calling up unpleasant forebodings for the future. Runaways were numerous, smashed buggies, and horses with their legs in slings this morning too numerous to mention.

IN THE EVENING

the city was brilliantly illuminated in all quarters, and the display of fire works was very fine indeed, which display together with the inevitable popping of crackers, torpedoes, and such articles were kept up until a very late hour by the enthusiastic Young Americas, much to the detriment of their patriotic parents, dreamingof the American eagle's screaming liberty to all the nations of the earth.

Foster-Brothers never know \vhat dull trade is. During the dull- season of the year they always make their prices still lower than before and by selling, goods at about cost price, keep their store as lively in July and August as at any other time.
