How the Old Thing Works! The Chicago Times illustratesrthe workings of the Internal Revenue oy a few illustrations:
It is a law that tobacco may be put up in boxes, packages, tubs or pails, duly stamped. If a man buys a box of cigars, he is liable to arrest, and a heavy fine if he uses the empty cigar box tor any other purpose. If he buys a tub, or a pail of tobacco, duly stamped, and after the tobacco is consumed, uses the pail for other purposes, or gives it away, or sells it, he is liable to arrest, a heavy fine and imprisonment.
Not long since, a grocery dealer in Meadota, 111., went out from his store, to leave it in charge of his little son till he should return. A man entered bought a few dozen of eggs. Looking about the little store asked he of the boy: -.Tr--??-:* ''What can I carry them in? Have you a basket or a box, or something to lend me?"
Nothing could be found till an old pail, from which the tobacco had* been sold, turned bottom up and used for a stool or seat, was discovered. Said the man: "Here's an old pail it will do to carry them in, and water horses from." "All right," said the little boy "I guess it ain't worth much "you can have it for.15 cents.
The man paid 15 cents for the old pail, put the eggs therein and went home. 8(ion after the merchant was arrested and taken to Chicago before a revenue officer, who heard the story and suffered him to go
011
payment of a $100. A
sneaking informer, who learned of the disposal of the pail, got $50 some one else had the rest.
Again: Not long since a merchant !in Morristown, Illinois, for a year confined to his bed with a non-healing abscess in his side, left his store in care of a clerk. In the store were several boxes of cigars, on which proper stamps were affixed. By law or enactment, these old stamps, duly paid for, became worthless on a certain date, when it was the business of the merchant to purchase, affix, and caucel new stamps to these boxes. Flat on his back, where he had lain in pain for months, he knew nothing of the law, or duties forced upon him—110 more did his clerk.
A su.eak in the revenue service called' at the store one day, looked at things generally saw these boxes of cigars yet unsold, thirteen in number, and took them with him to Sterling, Illinois, whet#they were duly confiscated.' The sick merchant, who had paid for proper stamps on these boxes once, was fined $100. ....
Not long since, at Freeport, Illinois, a pimp of an informer from Chicago, wandering to follow his damnable profession, entered a store and looked about for some time. At last he found an old bottle of 'pepper-sauce from which the stamp and label had fallen and lay on the shelf. He bought the bottle—went his way.
Two days after the merchant was arrested by an officer from Chicago, taken to that city and fined seventy-five dollars and cost—half of #hich went" to the loyal informer, when in fact, in intent aud in intention he bad wronged no one.

With him the fatjfily probably hecomfes extinct. And ttiiis we perceive the persistence of the taint in the fact that & generation of absolute temperance will not avert the fatal issue,

upon the pit of the stomach of a child, will cause the bowels to be emptied, and alloeskept in contact with a.raw. surface will produce same effect as if the'medicine had been taken into the stomachs So sftiil thfe great Dr. Cintterback. Very many persons know the operation of croton oil when placed upon the tongue, to say the least, it is speedy. Purgatives in some sha. e, are indispensable In the practice of medicine. Many diseases are incurable without them and all of the simple disorders of the system are benefitted by their use. The great desideratum In their adminlstra tion has been to get one which has eitherlaxa tive or purgative, as was needed—always mild but always efficient—and the use of which did not make it necessary to continue its nse. Thi has at last been done.

fulfill all the requirements of the
case. They area laxative, yet sure purgative, yet mild. In small doses, they meet the first" wtmtj in large dows, tl\ey fulfill the latter but in whatever quantity given, they create no necessity for they create no morbid state of tile alimentary canal tube, but leave It cleansed and urge it to renewed health. They are, in brief, a blessing to the individual who suffers from constipation and needs a laxative, an} are indispensable to him who is parched with fever and'requires a purgative.. Use them, all you who value health.
Helminthology.
wzsahuoV.
A distinguished physiologist has declared that ifc seems to be a principle of nature that every 'situation capable of supporting organic bodle should be peopled wlththeni. The huge whale is often driven to madess by an almost invisible member of the tribe of vermes. The history of Helminthology abounds in illustrations of the influence of worms in the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of men, their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states oi the animal economy, all tend to render them an objectof interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to tlie study of these entoza with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of- speedilyysafel'yand permaiMSfttly expelling them from the human aytenu B»ward

Dr. Laennec.
This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill in detecting the nature and form of the malady before bim, he was sadly deficient in his. knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and fell the af-Bt fections of the air passages still he left but -fewj words concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better, how to manage any one of these chcst troubles heknowsfa the value of the wild cherry he Is acquainted with its supreme virtues lie is aware of the many potent agents which enter into the cJom-wff bination of Edward Wilder-s Compound Extract of TFt'W Cherry, and knows that with the use oi this truly great medicine he is fully master or the situation, He has no fear in the presence of croup, no misgivings at the advance of bronchitis he grapples wtth consumption, and sub-" dues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Hence every family should always have this invaluable medicine at hand. »i Jtsli
