SHERIDAN INTERVIEWED.
His Opinion or the Battles of the FrancoGerman War—What he told a Reporter. The following is a translation of an alleged interview between Lieutenant General P. H. Sheridan, of the United States Army, and a reporter of the Illinois Staatz Zeitung:
Reporter.—Are you aware, General, that a great deal has been written lately about what you are represented to have said about the Emperor William, the Crown Prince, giving great oifence to the Germans?
Gen. Sheridan.—Certainly, I have heard about it but I have not taken any notice of it, because it is impossible to reply to every paper, and also, because I thought the falsehood of the report was so plain that nobody would believe it.
Reporter.—There you are mistaken. Have you any objection to the publication of this interview in the Staats Zeitunq
Gen. Sheridan.—None at all on the contrary, I would consider it a favor. I was received over there in so cordial and friendly a manner, that on that account alone I would not have made the expressions imputed tome, even if I had been so disposed.
Reporter.—What is your opinion of the great battles in the late war, as compared with those of the American war! You are reported to have said that the Germans excel only in skirmishing.
Gen. Sheridan.—I have said nothing of the kind—never spoken-of the matter at all. The number of combatants on either side in the American civil war did not, in most battles, come up to the enormous numbers of those engaged at Gravelotte, Sedan, etc. The victories of the Germans were not accidental, but the results of better generalship, superior discipline, and greater courage.
Reporter. You were with the King at Graveloite Gen. Sheridan. Of course that was the only battle in which the French ought to have won, and their defeat was unpardonable. It was true the Germans out-numbered them by forty thousand men, but the almost impregnable position of the French would have fully compensated them for a merical disadvantage, had they not lacked courage.
Reporter. Was the Crown Prince always in the rear of the army Gen. Sheridan, (emphatically).—No, sir! the Crown Prince was always with liis army, and in battles, whenever neoessary, before the front. I myself have seen him in a shower of bullets.
Reporter. But you are reported to have represented Prince Frederick Charles as a charlatan
Gen. Sheridan. There, you can see yourself how absurd these charges are. I have never seen Prince Frederick Charles. I only reached the King's headquarters at Gravellotte and remained with him, while Frederick Charles was left at Metz. At Sedan when both armies were united, I saw the Crown Prince for the first time, consequently I have, and can have, no opinion about Frederick Charles, having never seen him.
lS
Reporter. And the Emperor William, have you often seen him Gen. Sheridan. The Emperor Willam is a fine old gentleman, ana a good General. He possesses personal courage and I bravery in an unusually high degree.^ I myself have seen him under the heaviest fire at Gravelotte. Far from being under the influence of Bismarck, be has a firm determined will of his own, which he knows how to carry out, e^en in opposition to Bismarck. fi
Reporter.—Have you been long in Bismark's company Gen. Sheridan.—Certainly Bismark was always in the immediate vicinity of 'j headquarters. He is the greatest man in Europe by along way, and lie Is every inch a soldier, too.
Reporter.—According to the newspapers, you made the alleged remarks to Secretary Boutwell? 1 Gen. Sheridan.—I have nfever uttered a syllable about all this matter to Mr.
Boutwell, and I do not believe that he is responsible for the propagation of this falsehood. r? Reporter.—How did you find the discipline and bearing of the German soldiers?
Gen Sheridan.—Their discipline is excellent. On the whole way from Metz to Paris, I did not notice a single act unbecoming a soldier.
Reporter.—But certainly American I papers greatly indulged in virtuous in- ,, diguation at the burning of Bazeilles I and other villages. $ Gen. Sheridan.—That wa9 because they didn't understand anything about t? it. The destruction of those villages was necessary and fully justified. They had to conquer liouse by house from the
Franc-Tireurs. Reporter.—Did you leave tne besieging army around Paris really because it was too monotonous. (Jen. Sheridan.—No, I made a trip through Europe, because no offensive measures were to be expected. The plan at headquarters was to surround Paris 21 and starve it into surrender, because it •37$$ could be calculated With exactness when it would fall, and the Emperor wished
-V8
LJ
S to save human life. On the day following the capture of Paris I returned to headquarters. In all my travels I have everywhere spoken in praise of the German armies and leaders.

upon the pit of the stomach of a child, will cause the bowelt to be emptied, and alloeskept in contact with a raw surface-will produce same effect as if the medicine had been taken into the stomach. So said the great Dr. Clutterback. Very many persons know the operation of croton oil when placed upon the tongue, to say the least, it is speedy. Purgatives In some shaj e, are Indispensable in the practice of medicine. Many diseases are incurable without them and all of the simple disorders of the system are benefitted by their use. The great desideratum in their admlnistra fi tion has \eeii to get one which has either laxa tive or purgative, as was needed—always mild| but always efficient—and the use of which dld| not make it necessary to continue its use. Thi hasatlastbeendone. Edwahd Wkudbk's Fam-s ily Pills fulfill all the requirements of the^ case. They area laxative, yet sure purgative,!* yet mild. In small doses, they meet the first want in large doses, they fulfill the latter but in whatever quantity given, they create no necesslty for they create no morbid state of the alimentary canal tube, but leave it cleansed and urge it to renewed health. They are, in brief, a blessing to the individual who suffersfrom constipation and needs a laxative, and are' indispensable to him who is parched with fever and requires a purgative. Use them, all you who value health. *-^*4"'» Ain

A distinguished physiologist has declared that it seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodle should be peopled with them. The huge whale is often driven to madess by an almost invisible member of the tribe of vermes. The history of Helminthology abounds in illustrations of the fnfiuence of worms in the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of men, their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states ol the animal economy, all tend to render them an object of Interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have .» been devoted to the study of these entoza with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedily, safely and permanently expelling them irom the human sytem. Edwabd Winder's Mother's Worm Syrup is a
true vermicide, a geunine worm destroyer, a bona fide vermifuge. Its taste is delightful, its effects are quick, its results unfailing. It is free from danger. No intestinal worm can live in itspresense. Mothers! destroy the worms which infest your little ones, with this delightful ijf}

This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill in detecting the nature and form of the malady before him, he was-sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affections of the air passages still he left but few words concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better how to manage any one of these chest troubles} he knows the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of the many potent agents which enter into the combination of Edward Wilder-s Compound Extract of Wild Cherry, and knows that with the useoi this truly great medicine he is fully master oi the situation. He has no fear in the presence ol croup, no misgivings at the advance of bronchitis he grapples wtth consumption, and subdues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Hence every family should always have this invaluable medicine at hand. *i
iROigeSUOR,
4%&£§ .-!:&*,«*:. 'Which makes sleep a pain, and turns its balm to wormwood,1' is, we all know, the most, common of all the disorders of the stomach. It is also the most obstinate. It has been the most written about. No disease presents such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the laws of order* constancy and inconsistency, which regulate natural events they bother the doctor, and can only be read by him who is skilled in the book of nature. It is Self evident that the different ftirms of indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has been said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying to each individual case its precise and as it were, its individual cure. This is the object which every conscientious physician pursues unceasingly, and never can rest satisfied until he has overtaken. Edward Wilder's Stomach Bitter*, their body being the purest of copper-distilled whisky, makes this object attainable alike to all They area specific-4he disease specifying the mnedy, not the remedy the disease. They are a combjpation of substances which meet the speciality of the disorder by a corresponding speciality of cure. They should be kept in every well-regu-lated family they are indispensable to health
