FAREWELL TO THE SCHOOL MARMS.

"The Places that Once Knew Them," etc. The voices of the "school marms" are heard no more in the various school buildings of our city, and we artf all in the midst of dire desolation even our soul overflows with liquid luguberousness, as we contemplate their "last new departure oureyes grow dim and misty, our hands tremble like pin-feathers on a palsied gosling, and our proboscis sniffles as dismally as a disconsolate toad in an inun* dated grave. Ponderous grunts come gurgling up from the solemn and unfathomable depth of our vest pattern, our heart accomplishes the acrobatic. fate of turning a double geared suncynersault and alighthing "right end up with care" in a huge heap of soft agony.

The late session of our public schools hasende'd, the buildings have closed, the, bright and winsome schoolmarm3 whose rosy cheeks and sparkling eyes have so long lent such an attractive glow of bright, loveliness and brillant beauty to our own beautiful Buckboard City, have flown. Tons of solid loveliness, arrayed in calico, lawns, delaines, poplins and sicli, approximating to the loveliness, beauty and evident holiness of angelic sweetness, have gone from our midst, leaving the city in mournimgdeep, dark and mystic.

Oh, how desolate^ how forsaken and drear the old and new public school buildings of our prosperous and thriving little city, so lately redolent with living loveliness and mundane beauty, and resonant with mirth and music now seem. Their fair and beautiful forms have faded from the scenes around which cluster so many dearly cherished recollections so many dear and omnipresent tender memories. 3 0 isi

They have vanished frohi the streets of our staid city like flitting sunbeams, having at last in a large measure, departed for their various homes, scattered hither and thither tliroughut our great and prosperous State of Indiana, where they will be greeted with the radiant smiles of friends and acquaintances of other and younger days, and which surroundings will call up fond memories of the past and in some cases where they meet, "a flame" of former years, perhaps, inspire fond hopes for the future.

But the gain of those whom they may meet in the places of their childhood and schoolgirl days, will be our loss. YK

We individually feel like one who treads alone some deserted banquet hall at midnights, lonely hour loneliness creeps over our soul like a dark cloud, and deep, dark despair settles in our heart as the last dear school miss takes the "new departure."

We do miss the dear school misses, oh, so sadly.j We miss their sweet familiar faces .in our evening rambles and promenades through our streets. We miss them at the theaters, at circuses, at minstrel shows, prayer meetings and Sunday schools. We miss them in our millinery, dry goods and fancy stores, more especially at Riddle's, Herz & Arnold's, Warren, Hoberg & Co., Tuell, Ripley & Deming's. "Truthful Jatnes" and the book-keeper at the Buckeye Cash Store, mourn them as lost to their admiring optics. Tlaey are missed in all the various establishments in the red tape, ribbon and dry goods line in our fair city, where they were wont, to come and gp and cause the indulgent clerks to haul down bundle after bundle of various kinds ofgpods. We miss them in church, where they "used to" assemble 011 fair weather Lord's days, to show off their new fan-' gled bonnets, laces and gew-gaws and where young bloods, arrayed in .all the glory of shoddy suits, imitation Of patent leather boots, "Johnson's fifty cent Joseph kid gloves," icrcscopi ats'' from Joe Yates', and premature summer moustaches, could be found to admire thejgygae while,, casting, "sheep's ,eye" glances at the stunning water falls, and nuge chignons of their fascinating neighbors, arid at tfie skme time squirt tobacco juice all oyer the floor within a radius of ten feet. We miss them everywhere, and as we, in common with all the ybuhg and shsceptable of the city, ponder, meditate, reflect',v muse, dream and cogitate in deep and silent solitude, a cateraet of unutterable anguish and irrepressible woe breaks within our. bosorti and finds egress from our optics in copious showers of briny expressions of the sentiments^Upheaving our souls from within. Every Cat-intestine string on the fiddle of our auctions tire melted asunder with the liquid elements pf our heart, finding vent through our optical illusions. XH 'K

The city looksdark and dreary without their ijlumiuating countenances. They have, indeed, gone hither and thither and wfiither, and the male)i0art is idconsolable. They have gone to-homes that for jong weary months, have been .glooms'^without them.

Whefeveirith^y go«a nd Wjhat^yiepjfclieir 'circumstances and allotted part in the great drama of life, wherever they may be, the gootvwishesiof both old and young of all Terre Haute, will ever be with them. May a kind and ever protecting heaven defeddand shield them fi»m iili that is evil, aud withhold them from all that is wrong, aud stimulate them to all that fs wortby, true, noble and gtet, and may the young, whom they have and noiay in the future instruct iu the way they should go, etc., ever fondly cherish their memories.,

And, in conclusion^ long cherished hope that school officials throughout the .lenght and breadth of the land w^ich i8 blesaeil U»y^ the presence and instructionjgf^thje dear schoolmarms, see fit at an early day tp increase their l&st£a£4fo£fr dd is

JAPANESE hats prevail in this burgh just now. The only way a young man of enterprise can get on one of them is to hang it on the gate post top side down, and then stand on his head therein. If he succeeds in the enterprise, he is expected to "walk off on his ear."

MORE buildings are being put up in LaFayette this year than ever before, according to the local editor of the Journal, of that enterprising burgh. A few days since, however, he stated that business was so dull there that all the business men and their clerks had to do was to "flip pennies for the beer."
