sf ATE NORMAL SCHOOI.
Closing Exerdses of the Spring Term ,r of 1871. Yesterday ^morning, and afternoon, upo^t the occasion of the closing exercises of tKe State Normal School of Indiana, there was a large attendance of the friends of the ptudenw, and the cause of education, all of whom manifested a deep interest in the exercises of the day
So far as the morning exercises were concerned, we could not be present, aud the gentleman who made notes for us allowed them to be "gobbled" by the "little clerical fellow at the elbow of the chief writer of the Express^' who furnished that journal with the same. ,- As a "gobbler," that "little fellow" isa success, aud was evidently "cut out" for a newspaper man. Under the circumstances we have nothing to say of the morning exercises.
THE AFTERNOON EXERCISES 4 Were quite largely attended, and were of a highly interesting aud entertaining character throughout. The same commenced with music, which wasrepdere^ in most excellent and satisfactory style by Prof Paige and several of the young ladies and gentlemen of the Normal School, with Prof. Kilbourne presiding at the organ with his accustomed skill am me was not followed strictly. lilSS HATtfE SdoM? Told them the "Story of a Tree," which was well written, though delivered in too low ft tone of VdiC6. The difficulty of hearing this was to be accounted for, however, by the frequent interruptions by persons entering and walking across the room, The essay was one of very great merit, and reflected well on Miss Scott's ability../f
MISS BELLE POWNER
Delivered an essay ou "Aboriginal Am erica" in a manner that won for herthe merited good-will and applause of the audience. The ?ssay was well written, and very well delivered, indeed, and we bespeak fir Miss Powner fame and reputation in the field of literature.
MISS LOTTIE STIMSON'sii1 'M
Essay on "What is a Continent?" was a decidedly good article, and delivered by the young lady without reference to the manuscript, which was an evidence that she had thought deeply of her subject. She spoke in a clear and distinct voice, and merited the applause of the audience. 'MR. M. SEILEB'S* Essay on the^'Relation of Geography to Civilization" was good and was well delivered. Mr. S. evidently has studied his subject well, which resulted in his presenting those present with'"a good article," much to his credit and their satisfaction.
Profs. Kilbourne, Paige and the choir referred Jo above, then favored the audience with another excellent selection, whiclV1{they rendered in very fine style indeed, after which jooM

Miss LUCY V. GOSNEY,^,^
Read a splendid essay on the subject of "Who is a lady? Who is a gentleman?" in which she described the qualities ne cessary to constitute a lady or gentleman in a style dictated by close observation and a good common sense view of the case. The essay was enthusiastically re ceived by those present. Of course, it didn't apply to Drespntr^-^
MR. M. L. WELSH
Read a very fine essay on the "Measure ment of Quantity," which was well writtpn and fully as well delivered, at the close of whioh, O W
MISS MARY OAKEY
Read a most excellent and instructive essay on "Popular Education," wiiich convinced those present that she "knows whereof she speaks." Mi^s Oakey writes a first-class essay, as no doubt many will remember thai written by her last spring on the subject of '-Normal Schools." She will "make her marjk in the literary world.
At this point Miss Lessie Harrah»came forward and rendered a most beautiful solo entitled, "Under the Duties,"s Prof. Kilbourne playing the* acc&nfp&itiment ou the organ, with surpassing skill. The rendering of the solo by Mis3 Harrah, and the accompanipient by tne Prof., was the great j&VQcess of the day,' and was warmly applauded at the close.
Mr. W. W. Parsons read a very iiufe'essay, on "The Ancient Collonial Charters," in good voice, and to the satisfaction of all present.
MR. HOWABD SANDISQSi
then favored the audienee with a well written essay on "Then and Now" withodt refereacie to fh« iii"anri^i4pt, Titftii l»e had nearly finished the same when he enjoyed a search for the proper page^ though he endured the ordeal manfully.' iSi3 e^periertee leMirit^ us of having seen a noted lecturer in I^BW York, iuot mauy years since, knock his manuscript from off the table while lecturing, and as the pages were not fastened together,: they became very much
