The first symptoms are manifested in the slow, sluggish movements of the hind quarters, and in stumbling. It is a disease of the membranes over the spinal marrow, and beginning apparently over the lumbar vertibrre, effectually paralyzes the hind quarters. The distemper grad ually works itself along the spinal cord until It at last reaches the brain, when the fore-leg gives way, and the .horse is deprived of the use of his limbs.
The most remarkable feature of this disease in its present aspect—one in which it differs from the real cerebrospinal meningitis—is that the horse con tinues to eat and drink as heartily as though he was well, his appetite seems to increase rather than diminish as the disease advances. If the horse, when stricken with the disease, is allowed to lie down, he will never get up. Therefore, just as soon as numbness in the hind quarters is noticed, the horse is supported by broad canvass bands, and as soon as he is albe to stand, he is turned loose.
There is no effectual remedy for this frightful malady yet discovered. External applications are applied along the spii?al cord, and the horse is kept as quiet as possible. It is not contagious or infectious. Where there are five horses in a stable, two may be stricken down and the rest not show the slightest signs of the disease. It has appeared among the horses of the Third and Seventh avenue lines, as well as among the horses of some of the stage lines. Iu some localities it has swept over the country as a curse, paralysing in a day the farmer's finest stock. The poor truckman, too, who is so dependent upon his horse for his livelihood, has not been exempt from the ravages of this epidemic, but in a few hours has been obliged to seo hio horse stricken down helpless and die. A gentlemen in Westchester county, out of seven fine horses, lost five. It is reported that another gentlemen on Long Island, the owner of many fast trotting horses, has already lost six from this disease, valued at $30,000.
It may be noticed as a singular coincidence that cerebrospinal meningitis, although not of a malignant form, is prevailing extensively in many parts of Virginia. A few years ago sixteen persons died of this frightful disease inS jffolk county, Long Island, where it appeared in its most virulent form.
Superstitions of Vampires The Pall Mall Gazette says: case now before the High Tribunal at Berlin, we learn that the superstition of vampires—corpses who are supposed to rise from their graves at night and suck the blood ot those with whom: they have held intercourse in life—is still generally among the Poles and Magyars. A Polish gentleman died at his country seat at Koslasiu in February last, leaving his family in excellent health. A few weeks after his death, however, his eldestson was suddenly and unaccountably taken ill, hisshort sickness ending iu death. Similar cases, though not fatal, occurred among his near relatives. It was at once agreed that the deceased must be a vampire, and that his visits were the cause of this repeated illness. To save himself froi% the fate of his brother, the second son determined to apply the supposed only remy, viz., to exhume the b6dy, cutoff his
edy, viz., to exhume the b&dy, cutott nis head, and lay it with the feet, while another person was to collect the blood issuing from the wound to give to the remaining relatives to drink. He obtained the assistance of a laborer, naturally at a heavy price, but was prevented on his first expedition by the interference of the Parish priest. The next attempt proved more successful, and the deed was accomplished. It .had been observed, however, by some people in the village, and was brought to the-knowledge of the authortiesi The absurd superstition threatens to cost the desecrator of the churchyard a three months' imprisonment. That was the verdict in the first instance, and though the Court of Appeal has canceled the sentence, the High Tribunal seems resolved to confirm it.'?
Thos. Jefferson'sTen Rules of Life. The following rules for practical life were given by Mr.. Jefferson in a letter of advice to his namesake, Thomas Jefferson Smith, in 1825: 1. Never trouble* others with what you

A TERRIBLE HORSE DISEASE.
Spotted Fever Taking Down the Most Sagacious of Our Dnmb Servants— Something for the Veterinarians to
Study. .Within a few weeks past an alarming and fatal malady has made its appearance in the stables of some of the city railroad lines. By some it is pronounced to be that terrible disease known as cerebrospinal meningitis, or sometimes termed spotted fever, although many eminent veterinary surgeons say that it differs from that disease in some essential requisites. It recently showed itself among the horses of the Second avenue line, where there have been over one hundred and thirty cases, although not more than about twelve have as yet proved fatal.
£M ~f "Cruel as the Grave." jotin B. Gough, in a recent letter said "I cannot drink moderately. It is physically and morally impossible. If auy man should give me whisky by any means unknown to myself, it would be at the risk of my sinking back to what I was twenty-five years ago. You ma call it weakness, or what you will, but 1 is the truth." We do not doubt It, for we once knew a gentleman iu Boston, a man of the highest literary character and fa me, wbo^oeeasionally took to extreme drinking who once said, when remonstrated with concerning liis infirmity. "I love my wife and children dearly, and devotedly love them but when I have tasted liquor, were they standing on the brink of the bottomless pit, and condition offered.me teat I should go to eternal destruction if I should drink another glass ofobrandy, I would take the liquor. I ewtfld not help the act.''

So said the great Dr. Clutteiback. Very many persons know the operation of ciroton oil when placed upon the tongue, tost*? the least, it Is speedy.. Purgatives in some ss«af e, are indispensable in the practice of medicine. Many diseases' an incurable without them and all of the simple disorders of thesystem *re benefitted by their use. The great desideratum tn their administration has been to get one which has either laxative or purgative, as was needed—alwayB mild but always efficient—and the use of which did not make it necessary to continue its use. This liasatlast been done. EDWARD WLLDER'S FAMILY
Pills fulfill all the requirements of the case. They area laxative, yet sure purgative, yet mild. In small doses, they meet the first want in large doses, they fulfill the latter but in whatever quantity given, they create no necessity for tliey crcate 110 morbid state of thenlimentary canal tube, but leave it clpansed and urge it to x-cnewed health. They are, in brief, a blessing to the individual who suffers from constipation and needs a laxative, and are ndisiensaWe to him who is parched with fever and requires a purgative. llelminthology.
A distinguished physiologist hasdeclared that it seems to be principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organie bodie should be peopled with them. The huge whale is often driven to madess by an almost invisible member of the tribe of vermes. The history of Helmintliology abounds in illustrations of the influence of worms in the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of men, their obvionsness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states ol the animal economy, all tend to rtittderttrem an objec^o# interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the Study of these entqea witlv the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedily, safely and permanently expelling them irom the human sytern. renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries wliich before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill in detecting the nature and form of the malady before him, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew-vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all tlie affections of the air passages still he. left but few words concerning their treatment.
