EDITOR EXPRESS: I clip the following very interesting bit of news from to-day's GAZETTE "Yesterday, as usual on Sunclaj*, was a big time in the Mayor's Court, with the following result
The writer then goes on to enumerate a number of cases which, as he says, were disposed of on Sunday.
Now the facts in tills matter are, that on Sunday Mayor Thomas was suffering from a severo attack of cholera morbus, and was not able to be out of bod all day, consequently there was no "bi^ time in the Mayor's'Court," nor was there a single case tried. .But the idea of the GAZETTE man calling yesterday a "big timo" is decided!}''good. The young gentleman who does the local scribbling for that journal should at least approximate the truth, and learn to distinguish between sensation and bare fabrication.
JUNE 2Gth. PLUTO. The above reproving criticism appeared in the Express of this morning. We do not do our "local scribbling" to suit any particular individual, not even "Pluto." We go to the Mayor's Court each day, just before the GAZETTE goes to press, and make a complete report of all the cases on the records of that Court. Monday, we called as usual, and as the Mayor was absent, we copied the new cases on the docket, and understood that they were tried the day before, as cases have been tried in that Courton Sunday. We so publish them and with no intent, whatever, to fabricate.
Even if the Mayor should dispose of cases on Sunday, we should think him pursuing the proper course, because when a man is eharged with crime, the law presumes him innocent of the charge until proven guilty, and he has at least a moral right to demand a hearing, even on Sunday, and the Mayor has the same right to grant it. We say this because we wish it distinctly understood that we in no way meant to speak disrespectful of Mayor Thomas because he disposed of cases on Sunday. "Pluto" certainly did not read the local columns of the Express yesterday (Monday) morning or he would have been aware that he was criticising that paper through its own columns in his card of this morning. There appeared in that issue of the Express the following remarkable item "The Mayor 'settled the hash' of two dead beats yesterday, before going to church."
If "Pluto" desires to criticise the Ex•pt'czs let him do so openly and not over our shoulders. That paper openly charges His Honor of "settling the hash" of two dead boats before going to church, when "Pluto" says "MayorThomas was sullering from a severe a!tack of the cholera morbus and not able to be out of bed ali that day"—not even able to "settle his own hash."
The Chief of Police says the dead boats referred to were discharged from custody by himself, without a hearing, as he knew them to be dead beats of the first water. While "Piuto" may be a success as "God of the infernal regions," as his name implies, (see Webster's Dictionary as a critic lie is entirely too thin.
THE CITY OF MAGNIFICENT SHADES AND SWEET PERFUMES.—Our city was never more beautiful than just now, arrayed in her robe of green—the beautiful gala dress of nature at this season of the year. The city is not only beautiful to the eye but to the smell (when one don't get too strong a scent, which is occasionally wafted to them by the gentle breezes from the artesian wells or from filtliy liogs pens.) Aside from the two nuisance nam^d in parenthesis above, the whole air is redolent with the breath of tlowers, like the "perfumed wind entrancing, wafted from the isles of spices and balms."
What is there if nature and life that can exceed in brightness, beauty and perfume the glory of June—the month of roses. Jn this month ail the senses find full satisfaction. Only let the ordi nance prohibiting the hitching of horses to the beautiful shade trees of the city be rigidly enforced, and our reputation as the city of magnificent shades will be maintained and only let the artesian well and the hog pen nuisance be abated, and Terre Haute will then be entitled to the name of "the city of sweet perfumes."
SAD CASE OF DROWNING.—Mr. Jacob Strouse, son of the livery table keeper, at Rockville, and leader of the brass band of that burgh, was drowned Sunday afternoon in the Wabash, below Montezuma a few miles, where he, in company with several other young men, were in bathing. He was a good swimmer, but getting into deep water he was seized with the cramp and drowned before assistance could reach him.
At last accounts his body had not been found, though every effort to that effect was being made by his many friends and sympathizers. Pie was ayoung man of very great promise, and had served his country well in the hour of her greatest need.
THE pleasantest place for a picnic is beside running water, but there seems to be a great difference in the choice of localities. Yesterday afternoon we saw a number of small boys enjoying themselves with their baskets and pails as they sat eating their good things by the side of the artesian well, down near the banks of the Wabash. They said they didn't have any eggs, and they went there so they could "get asniiT" of something that smelled like eggs, though it did smell like very old ones. There is no accounting for juvenile tastes, anyhow.
TO-MORROW, is commencement day at St. Mary's popular institute, and an excursion train will be run from this city over the I. & St. L. R. R., leaving the depot of that road at

o'clock A. M.
The commencement exercises will commence at 10 o'clock A. M. The train will return leaving St. Mary's at 4 o'clock P. M. As there are a great mmy in this city who have attended school there and many others who have friends there, we anticipate that there will bq a very large attendance.

TO THK LADIES. BALTIMORE, February 17,1870.
I have bef a surierer from Kidney Complaint producing Gravel and those atllictions peculiar to women, prostrating my physical and nervous systems, with a tendency to Consumptive Decline. I was dispondent and gloomy. I tried all "Standard Medicines" with no relief, until I took De Bing's wonderful Remedy. I have taken six bottles, and am now free from that combination of nameless complaints. How, thankful I am to be well.
