Tile re was a depth and power his voice that but few speakers have e\et ]ossessed. Addressing an audience of ten thousand people in the open air, every sentence that fell from his lips could be distinctly heard. Possessing enthusiasm and honor, ami'wonderful versatility oi manner anci. felicity of expression, his campaign speeches were the ablest and most effective ever delivered. He contributed more than any other aaan to build up the Jackson party in Maryland, and when he .left the party upon the I'nited States Bank question, he dealt it many telling blows. In the campaign of 1840 he took a most conspicuous part. He presided at the great ratification held on the Canton race course, when Clay and Webster and Preston made speeches. It was upon this occasion that Mr. McMalion began his speech with the famous sentence:' "Every valley has its rills, every mountain its stream, and lo the avalanche of the people is here was the author of a history of Maryland, of which only one volume was'pubiished. From 18-7 to 1SU8 he practiced law in Baltimore, but, being alliicted with partial loss of sight, returned to Cumberland, his native place, in which, and Dayton, he spent the remainder of his (lays. Had he lived lie would have completed his seventy-lirst year on the 18th of August next. He was never married. The Baltimore Sun relates the following incident illustrating his popularity "He was about twenty-five years ago called upon by a lady of Charles coun ty, in this State, to draw up her will, which he did, at her request, leaving a blank lor the name of the devisee. He wasgreatiy astonished at the death of the lady, not Jong after, to learn that his name had been inserted in the blank places in the will, and that, in admiration of his talents, she had bequeathed him her propertv, valued at $25,000."

This man was an intimate friend and great admirer of John C. Calhoun. His relations with lteverdy Johnson were confidential and friendly. Over the convention that nominated General W. H. Harrison for President he presided. It was in Baltimore, Maryland. The crowd in attendance was immense. Infilling the convention to order he used the memorable words: "The nation will come to order."

AN EXtTHNtt SITUATION.

A Tarmer Attacked by an Enraged Horse. From several farmers coming into town, yesterday, from the township of Taylor, our reporter learned the particulars of a very exciting affair which oceiirred in that township, about 17 miles from Detroit, on Sunday last. A man named Pierce Andrews, who had lately moved in from Washtenaw county and leased a farm, returned that morning with a young horse that he had purchased in Wyandtte. In riding tlieani mal home Andrews had to give him several whippings, and was once or twice run away with, and thus when he arrived home he was tired out, and the horse was nervous and excited. There being some goods packed away in the stables, Andrews took the horse in on the barn floor to tie him. While so doing the animal bit him, and for this he was soundly belabored with the handle of a broken pitchfork. After being struck several times he broke loose and ran at Andrews and struck him down with one of his fore feet. While in this position the farmer received a bad injury by being stepped on, but managed to gee up and show fight, still retaining possession of his weapon. The horse reared, kicked and uttered mad neighs, and in a moment struck him down again. Andrews fell so close to a partition that the horse could not get at him well, and here he kept the beast at bay by pounding his legs with the club he had.

The people at the house heard the sounds of the struggle, and a hired man and the family were soon around the door. As the horse seemed to quiet down a little, the man shouted to Andrews to crawl carefully along to the door. This the farmer started to do, and had not crawled three feet when the horse pouned upon him again, and this time dislocated his shoulder, by a blow of the hoof. The horse then commenced kicking and plunging at everything, jumping at Andrews wlieuever the farmer moved, and, in this emergency, seeing that he was likely to be killed, he shouted for the man to get the family out of the yard, and then open the door, supposing that the animal would then go out. This was done but the horse plunged out and in again with such rapidity that the farmer could not escape, the animal making at him every time he tried it. As a last resort the hired man loaded an army musket with fine shot, and gave the horse the full charge in the shoulder at short range. The beast went down, jumped up, made a few circuits of the yard, and then leaped the fence into the pasture, and ran until tired out. Andrews was badly bruised in many places, hail a shoulder dislocated as stated, and will be confined to the house for some time. The horse received considerable injury from the gunshot, but it is thought that a veterinary surgeon can heal the wound. —.

THE death of Charles Hugo, a son of Victor Hugo, occurred very suddenly at Bordeaux, on March 13th. In the morning he had breakfasted with his father ami Louis Blanc. In the evening the former was to give a farewell dinner at a restaurant to some friends. At eight o'clock Charlie Hugo took a cab to join the party, ordering the driver to stop at a cafe on the way. When the man did so lie found that Sir. Hugo, who was alone in the vehicle, had ceased to exist. He had had an epoplecticstroke, followed by hemorrhage* The deceased had for some time been ailing, his health having suffered from hiaresideuce in Paris during the siege.

A BOSTON lady thinks she is going to get to heaven on the strength of her well known charity to the poor. She has frequently been known, without any display of ostentation, to boil a large number of eggs, and when the poor people come to herdoor distribute to the hungry callers the soup that' was left after boiling the eggs. Such acts of charity are unusual in Boston but that's a little too thin to get to heaven on without stirring in a little thickening.

This renowned Frenchman did more jiterfiot* to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invented the nature of chestdiseasies{tiaii any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill in detecting the nature and forrtt 6t the malady before him, he was sadly deflciep£ in his knowledge of remedies. He drew' vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the feet ions of the air passages still lie left.but^ lesf words concerning tlieir treatment. The young?" est physician to-day knows better how tQ mftiiage any one of these chest troubles lie knows the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of tlwi many potent agents whicli enter into the combination of Edward Wilder'a Compound Extract of Cherry, and knows that with the use or this truly great medicine he is fully master ol the situation. He lias no fear in the presence o.I croup, no misgivings at the advance ol bronchitis lie grapples with consumption, and subdues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Hence every family should always have this invaluable medicine at hand.

Indigestion,

•Which makes sleep a pain, and turns its balm to wormwood," is, we all know, the most, cornmpn of

all

the

disorders of the stomach. It is also the most obstinate. It has been the most written about. No disease presents such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency, which regulate natural events they bother the doctor, and can only be read by him who is skilled in the book of nature. It is self evident that the different forms of indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has been said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying to each individual case its precise and as it were, its individual cure. This is the object which every conscientious physician pursues unceasingly, and never can rest satisfied until he lias overtaken.

Ed-

vard Wilder'.* Stomach Bitters, their body being the purest of copper-distil led whisky, makes this object attainable alike to all. They area specific—the disease specifying the remedy, not the remedy the disease. They are a combination of substances which meet the speciality or the disorder by a corresponding speciality ot cure. They should be kept every well-regu-lated family they arc indispensable to health

Gauiliiiiina River-

The British army when it advanced on Talavara and fought the celebrated battle, which was followed by a retreat into the plains, lost more men by the malarial diseases contracted on the banks of the Gaudiana than by the bullets of the enemy. They died by thousands All Europe believed that the invading army was extirpated. Yet malaria diseases are no more common in Europe than in our own country tliey exist throughout the length and

breadth

of our land—every where at some time

and in some shape are we made to feel the sickaning influence of miasm. The three great actors in this equation of disease are solar heat, moisture, and vegetable decomposition. The tiio, if separated, are harmless together they are more potent for evil than any other known agents so long as they exist, just so long will we have need of a medicine which will over

their pernicious effects, so long will it be necessary to have a remedy capable of meeting and beating the insidious enemy. Of all known agents for this purpose, none is to compare with Edivoi Wilder1.? Chill Tonic, the master of every form aiul variety and grade and degree of malarial disease and of miasmatic poison. Try it, all you who are suflering from any form of ague and fever or chills and fever, as a cure is guaranteed in every case.

This ancient instiitntion is one ot the largest, and to the medical student, the most interesting of the many public charities which adorn the gay capitol of the French. It receives within its walls annually thousands of sick poor. A considerable portion of the building is
