"BEAUTIFUL

SNOW."—In

EUOB B.

WHAT GENTLEMEN WON'T DO.—Ac

cording to the Indianapolis Sunday People, a Boston woman says that women cannot stand in the street cars for these good reasons: Many a woman is as tall as her husband, but compare his broad and long foot in its thick boot with her little one in a delicate shoe, arched and slender and about two-thirds the size of his. Compare the body that she has to support on that foot—its small bones, soft muscles, swelling and heavy contours—with the large bones, firm muscles, small hips, and spare limbs of his strong frame reflect, moreover, upon the internal structure of her organism the frightful danger to which strain or over-fatigue may expose it, including the possible murder of the unborn—and then insist, if you can, that women can stand as well as men. It is not true, they can not. Xo true gentleman would sit in street car or elsewhere while a woman was standing who was desirous of seat. Xo gentleman will delib erately remain seated in any public place while a lady' is standing near by. But some will say we don't know that every woman we see i3 a lady." The proper way to do is is to treat every woman as a lady until she positively proves herself otherwise, and then shun her. While she may not be a lady, it is evident that you are no gentleman if you sit quietly by and allow her to stand on her teet in a jiublic hall or in a public coveyance, if you don't hnoiv her not to be a lady. In all such cases, give the better phase of the case the benefit of the doubt.

MISSPENT EVENINGS.—The

A NUISANCE

tttfe many claimants to the authorship of that gem of the English language, entitled "Beautiful Snow," Mr.

Bead, the accomplished and

talented editor of the Indianapolis tSunday JPteptei and formerly editor of the -National Union, says that he did publish the poem from the manuscript and that he has good reasons for believing that IJie author thereof etiil lives.

boy who

spends an hour of each evening loitering on the street corner, wastes, in the course of a year, three hundred and sixty-five precious hours, which, if applied to study, would familiarize sciences. If in addition to wasting an hour each evening he spent ten cents for a cigar, which is usually the case, the amount thus worse than wasted would pay for ten of of the leading periodicals of the country Boys, think of these things. Think how much precious time and good money you are wasting, and for what? The gratification afforded by the lounger on the corner, or by the cigar, is not only temporary, but positively hurtful. You cannot indulge these practices without seriously injuring yourselves. You acquire idle and wasteful habits, which will cling to you through life, and grow upon you with each succeeding year. You laay, in after life shake them off, but the probabilities are that the idle habits thus formed in early life will remain with you till your dying day. Be warned then in time, and resolve that as the hour spent in idleness is gene forever, you will improve each passing one, and thereby fit yourselves for usefulness and happiness.

MISPLACED CONFIDENCE "THAT'S WHAT'STHE MATTER

WITH THE

THAT

MUST BEABATED.

—The attention of the parents of a squad of impudent and mischief making, loafing young lads, residing in the northeast part of the city, is called to their liability as parents for the acts of their children. The young rutllans under consideration, for some time have been in the habit of jumping on the street cars and riding until noticed by the driver, who has positive instructions to order them off" and when he does his duty, they throw stones at him, not only at the eminent, risk of destroying the property of the company, but of doing serious injury to the driver, who has all he can do to manage his horse and car. The drivers and conductors of the cars have "spotted" the chaps of whom we are speaking, and who range from the ages of S to 15 years, and will have them arrested and lined at a time when they least expect it, and their parents will have to pay their lines. Be careful, boys. Parents who reside in the locality referred to will do well to look after their progeny.

A COLORED man .arose and gave his seat to a lady Avholentered a Walnut street car yesterday. She thanked him in a pleasant way, and the souls of the white men in the car were devoured with envy.—Louisville Commercial.

Though that man had a dark skin, he has the politeness and the soul of a gentleman such as many white men do not possess, and conclusively proves that a while heart may pulsate beneath a black skin or a black heart beneath a white skin.

THE local of the GAZETTE showed his rooster Wednesday evoning, a fine looking chanticleer.—journal.

The rooster we "showed" belonged to Edmunds, of the Journal. We borrowed his rooster for the occasion, for the reason that it better represented the old shanghai, which was made the subject of the illustration, than any we could get, as we wished to represent one that liad the appearance of having had a chronic attack of the chicken cholera.

—The Deputy Sheriff of Marion county, Harry McFarland, and who resides in Indianapolis, was a few days since the sole proprietor of a terrier pup of symmetrical proportions with the exception that his ears and tail were too long. Yesterday ho eon suited with an old "choppist" who holds forth at the Spencer House, as to the practicability of trimming the tail and ears of the pup aforesaid. The choppist, of course, at once proceeded to chloroform the animal, which he did to a "dead certainty," for at the close of the trimming operation when the usual restoratives were applied, imagine the astonishment and grief of the proprietor of the pup, when he failed to recognize any signs of animation. The subtle drug was too much for the sensitive nerves of the terrier, and he was planted. Mac. thinks it the "doggoudesl" case of misplaced confidence on record—his trusting the life of his favorite mouser to the old Spencer House choppist. Mac. wears mourning on his hat, and the choppist should wear mourning about his eyes.
