A CERTAIN young lady of this city has been keeping the "natives" awake during the nights of the last month, with her sobbing, all because her cruel parent won't buy her a bustle. Cruel, heartless parent, can't appreciate the styles of the day.

WB CAN'T PLEASE ALL.—An editor might as well undertake to hold himself out at arms length by the seat of the pants, and then turn a double summersault over a meeting house steeple, as to attempt to publish a paper that will please everybody.

"THE CITY OF MAGNIFICENT SHADES. —We clip from the Indianapolis Journal of this morning as much of their "special's" letter of correspondence from the State Sunday School Convention as refers to the reception, as follows, and pronounce it good—decidedly funny: "The first object that met our gaze on reaching the Terre Ilaute depot was along row of omnibusses, with "Lin." Smith in the foreground! We bould readily distinguish Smith from an onmibn.s by the the splendid assortmentof Masonic fixin's hanging to his watch chain. Besides, his countenance was not quite as wide open as the "bus" that stood in the background. "Lin." was "runner-in-cliief" for the whole line of omnibusses on this particular occasion. Ho hadn't the "Jehu" lingo exactly but soon made us understand that the first thing on the programme was for all hands to "pile in" to those 'busses, which would convey us to the church without money and without price. We were on the point of obeying the order to "pile," when Captain S. II. Potter, whom everybody knows who knows anything worth knowing about Terre Haute, seized our spare hand and led us through the crowd to his carriage, in which he wheeled us off down the shady avenue to his new and handsome residence, whence we write you henceforth during our stay in this city ot magnificent shades."

Of course, every one who lias enjoyed the welcome shades of our city will unite with the Journal's correspondent in calling our city the "city of magnificent shades." The "special's" mode of distinguishing cur distinguished fellowcitizen, "Lin." Smith from the other "busses" is a good, and we think an infallible one, and reminds us of the story of the showman, who was exhibiting a picture of Daniel in the den of lions, and who told the audience that they could distinguish Daniel from the other lions by his having a blue cotton umbrella under his arm.

ILLUSTRATED BIBLE DICTIONARY.— Rev. J. H. V. Smith, of the City Book Store at No. 4 East Washington street, Indianapolis, dealer in theological, miscellaneous, school books, religious and Sunday school books of all denominations, blank books, paper, envelopes, and stationary of all kinds, and depository of the publication of the Methodist Book Concern, favors us with a copy of a new and complete Illustrated Dictionary of the Holy Bible, comprising a general index, in which the various persons, places and subjects mentioned in it are accurately referred to, and every difficult word explained, which is the completest, and at the same time the most accurate, for the price, of any we have ever examined.

Mr. S. is now in the city in attendance on the Convention, and any persons desiring such a work will consult their interests and Mr. Smith' spleasure by giving him a call, or ordering from liisestablishment at Indianapolis the work described above, or any others in his line. Mr. Smith is Corresponding Secretary of the State Sunday School Convention.

"THE PRAIRIE CITY GUARDS" are indeed organized, and on the glorious old Fourth, the natal day of the Republic, Will they for the lirst time don their new and elegant uniforms, and parade our streets. Their uniforms will consist of blue jackets, blue pants, white leggins, red shirts and blue caps, the suits to be made up of the National colors of "red, white and blue" and will be cut at the establishment of Phil. Schloss and made up and trimmed by several ladies, whoso services will be secured for that purpose.

They have filed articles of association with the authorities and have a requisition for the necessary amount of Springfield rifles and accoutrements.

The seal of the company will be as follows "The corporate seal of this association shall consist of the seal of the State of Indiana with the words Prairie City Guards, Terre Haute, Indiana, around said seal of the State of Indiana, in circular form."

THE FIRE.—The alarm of fire which startled our citizens from their blissful slumbers about half-past four this A. M. was occasioned by the partial burning of a building owned by Johu G. Kesler, and located near the corner of Fourth and Walnut streets, and occupied by Mrs. Shriever as a boarding house. The engines were out promptly and suppressed the flames, !sut not until the roof and partitions were destroyed and other buildings in the vicinity were more or less damaged. It is not publicly known how the fire was communicated.

Mr. Hester's building was insured, but we did not learn that the furniLlipg and effects G?-tile fiiihiiy Fe'siding therein were.

CORRECTION.—We were in error last evening is stating that the "committee appointed to prepare music for the S. S. S. Convention, had a few heavy choruses, duetts and solos on hand to be disposed of at a great sacrifice." The entire lot has been accepted by the Convention, and we are glad to be able to announce that the committee were successful in rendering a portion of the "stock on hand" last evening at the Congregational Church, andjthe remaining few will be appropriately rendered by the choir this evening. No fears are now entertained by the committee that any serious loss will be sustained.

OPEN AIR MEETING.—It is to be hoped that the open air meeting this evening will be largely attended, and that much good may result. Last evening one man was observed standing in the streets listening to the first address of that nature that he has heard within the memory of the "oldest inhabitants." If only one such stray sheep can thus be brought into the fold it is of sufficient importance to hold such meetings for two weeks.

WHO DID IT?—Who printed the posters for the celebration of the Young Men's Amulet on the 4th of July? It must have been done at Indianapolis. No office in this city would allow such a besmeared looking job to go out of it. It is a disgrace to any printing office in this enlightened day and age. Don't all speak at once. Whoever did it, was ashamed to put on their imprint.

THE free display of fireworks on Sixth street, last night, was occasioned by an effort to drive the martins from the Prairie City Bank building where they have taken up their quarters in such numbers as to be come troublesome to tho occupants.— Express.

Does that include L. B. Martin? If they should "smoke him out" we are of the opinion that the best interests of the Savings Bank would "take the new departure."

JOB BLAKE is said to be the champion bridge cputraot-awarder of the Wabash.

MAYOR'S COURT, Hon. Alex. Thomas presiding, transacted the following business since our last report: John E. Snyder, charged with disorderly conduct in the "little house on the corner," west of the Filbeck House, on Fifth street, was fined $19.85, in default of which little sum he was "sent up."

Capt. Welch indulged in the delightful pastime of building bonfires contrary to an ordinance of the city made and provided against said bonfires, which cost him So.75.

L. Gammon, charged with disorderly conduct was found guilty and fined and costed in the sum of $7,75.

James Carrigan, of South First street, charged with disorderly, was also found guilty and fined and costed $7.75.

An old gray-headed veteran in years, and perfection in the profession of "dead beats," was discharged from custody, he having been arrested on a charge of beastly intoxication.
