OPERA HOUSE.
Billy Maiuiiug's Minstrels. ,'
The first appearance of Biliy Manning's famous minstrels at the grand Opera House last evening, was greeted with a very large attendance, and as usual on the occasion of such entertainments, composed largely of the boa ton of our city. There is no denying the fact that a minstrel performance will draw larger and better audiences in our city on short notice than any entertainment that comes along. Generally, this is to be iegretted but we must admit that the entertainment given by Manning's troupe last evening, was an exception to the general rule. This troupe is made up of the finest looking, most talented and neatly dressed artistes we have ever seen on any stage. In the grand introductory overture and chorus, fourteen artistes appear, each of whom are first-class in their specialties, and many of whom are extra. The "sharps" gotten oft'by this troupe were generally new and very pointed and laughable. In short, the "hits" were all decidedly good, to the point and as they merited, received the enthusiastic plaudits of the audience.
The singing was indeed very good. "Oh Grive Me a Home by the Sea," a beautiful ballad, was most charmingly and touchingly rendered by J. La Mont, while the comic refrain ol' et as Sugar Cane" by tlie inimitable Billy Manning himself, was rendered in excellent style and voice, eliciting the most flattering demonstrations of appreciation from the audience, which called out an encore. C. S. Frederick's "Ciose the Door Gently, for Mother's Asleep," was very sweetly sung and enthusiastically received. Mr. Fredericks is a very gifted singer and as such is a great acquisition to any minstrel troupe. The comic song of the "Widow Magee" was rendered by that most comical cuss Ben Cotton in a manner that elicited the warmest demonstrations of appreciation from those present. .7. J. Kelly's "Meet Me at Twilight To-Mor.vow," was excellently rendered and was well received. The descriptive finale, entitled "Carry the News to Mary," introducing a Plantation Festival by the entire company, was a good tiling and was enthusiastically cncorccl.
The Grand Artistic Clog Dance, by Stevie Rogers, and Little Eddie, was splendid, and of course encored as often as they would come out.
Bob Hart, as a lecturer on the Darwinian Theory of the Descent of Man, was a tremendous efibrt aud a decided success.
C. S. Frederick's rendering of that beautiful ballad of "Good Night Beloved,'' was rendered in that sweet musical voice peculiar to himself, and no doubt reminded many a lover in the audience of the sweet good night's salutation they had received from time to time in their lives from lips they loved. "Nilsson at the Southern," was, as designed, as complete a burlesque as ever the field of burlesque will admit of, and resulted in frequent and uncontrollable outbursts of laughter from all present.
The Pas de Danube was the only part of the performance that we feel is
readers
to "go and
see how it is themselves." A change of programme will be made to-night. Reserve seats can lie secured at B. G. Cox's bookstore during the day without extra charge.
PERSONAL.—In our local notice column will be found a card from Dr. .1. 'Hall to the sick and afflicted that will be to the interest of those to whom it is addressed. The Doctor is perfectly reliable as an adviser and a gentleman, as we have known him personally a long time in other eities and were pleased to meet him upon his advent into the beautiful buckboard city—the home of our adoption.
Sant. C. Davis and Horace Greeley have both returned home from their tour in Texas. 31 r. Greeley made a speech at his home last evening on the state of Southern affairs. Sant arrived this A. M. and lias not made his speech yet. His friends will no doubt serenade him at the National this evening, upon which occasion Sant. is expected to "spread himself." We will be present to take a short-hand report by request of the American Press Agent of Philadelphia
B. Cookingham, Agent of the Vandalia Short Line Railroad, at Indianapolis, is in the city, and gave us a call. He does not know much about cookinfj horn as his name would suggest, but he does know how to manage the interests of the deservedly popular old reliable Vandalia Short Line, at Indianapolis.
THE BUMMER NUISANCE.—The merchants are complaiuing loudly this week of the bore tribe—the men who lounge around stores and offices when all are busy, begging and chaffering, trying to sell a patented humbug, or soliciting an examination of some new "indispensable." Drummers may oftimes fill a niche to advantage, but as a rule they are annoyances. Especially are they an annoyance when they haug around au establishment three or four hours after a man has told them in emphatic and positive terms that he has more stock on hand than he can dispose of for months.
THE Vincennes San comes to our sanction in a new dress and presents a neat typographical appearance, which would do credit to a metropolitan daily. The Sun is one of the spiciest and ablest papers that comes to our table and we ever greet it with a grim smile of satisfaction as our "devil" lays it before us.

EVIDENCES OF PROSPERITY.—It only requires a stroll around town and a glance at the new buildings that are springing up in all directions, to convince the mind of the most skeptical person that our beautiful city is improving very rapidly. Upon every hand, new and elegant business blocks and palatial residences are springing up, while manufactories of all kinds are sending up the smoke from the many smoke stacks in the city suburbs and vicinity, all evidences of our rapidly growing and prosperous condition. Let the good work proceed.

ing of criticism. We insist that it is not in good taste for even minstrels to make such a display of legs as was made by the character in this dance, arrayed in female attire last evening. But people who attend, must expect such displays, and we shall goon the presumption that those present did not care, and submit. what we have said above as our opinion'merely. The "Haunted Pawnshop" and "Quiet Lodgings" were presented in most appropriately ludicrous style, and were enthusiastically received throughout.
