MONDAY, JUNE 12, 1871.
City and Neighborhood.
MANNING'S MINSTRELS to-night.
Now comes the harvest days—the hottest of the year. THE city Board of Equalization is in session to-day.
DON'T fail to go and see Billy Manning at the Opera House to-night.
ENVELOPES with your card printed on, at this office, for less than you can buy the plain envelopes for at other places.
THE "little preacher around the cor^ ner," "tole 'em" what he knew about lawyers last evening. It did'nt take him long.
THE thirteenth annual commencement of St. Mary's Institute takes place on the LNSth inst., to which the friends of the same are respectfully invited.
A SUCCESS.—Capt. C. H. Allen, in addition to his duties as chief editor of the Express, is also conducting the local columns of that paper, and in both departments is a decided success..
THE various Sunday Schools of the city are respectfully invited to meet in the basement of the Congregational Church at P. M. to-day, to rehearse music for the Sunday School Convention which convenes in this city to-morrow.
JCST as we go to press, we learn that the Ladies' Aid Society, have relieved the wants of the poor woman and suffering family, whose destitution we wrote of in another column. May the Society ever minister to the wants of the poor and needy as in the past and the present, and their record will be a bright and shining one.
CHARLEY HALL'S JEALOUSY.—Fort Branch young ladies voted a twenty dollar bouquet to the negro barber of that burg, as the most popular young man in the place, according to the local of the KvaiifwiHe Courier, who "slops over" in a quarter of a column on the depravity of the feminine taste of that delectable town. Don't get jealous, Charles.
PERSONAL.—T. H. B. McCain of the Crawfordsville Journal is in the city. Dr. J. Hail of New Hampshire, as is Ceorge W. Cummings of the Mail leaves the city at 4 P. M., to-day for Meroni to report the commencement exorcises of the Christian Institute of that place. It strikes us that old Sullivan county is a fine field for missionary labors.
ARTIFICIAL LIMNS.—To-day we insert the advertisement of the Artificial Limb Company of Pittsburg. This Company is entirely composed of ex-soldiers and citizens, wearing the limbs they make themselves. They have experimented largely with other kinds of artificial limbs, and finally they have experimented to complete success with their new adjustable socket legs which for comfort, exceedes anything yot invented in this line, wliiist for lightness, grace, and durability, itis at.least equal to the best. The Company is chartered by the State,-and is entirely responsible, being composed of highly respectable maimed jsiechanics, and business men of Pittsijurg. Any of our readers requiring the article, we would advise them to send to this Company, at 748 Penn. street Pittsburg, for a circular, which will give full Information, as to price, etc.
THE MUSICAL SUNDAY SCHOOL MASS MEETING at Dowling Hall yesterday afternoon, under the management of Prof. Foot, of Chicago, was an unqualified access in every respect. Dowling's beautiful and commodious hall was well Jfille4 with angelic little singers, perfcw».atei by children of the various Sunday schools of the city, and quite a number of deeply interested spectators, made np of the friejjds .of the cause.
The singing, under the leadership of the Prof., who is acknowledged by all who know as one of the m&st successful -and skillful readers of music iu the land, avas aegood, and we think better, than wee ve? heard before upon such an occa-
°hi the evening there was a repetition of the ejiercises of the afternoon, at Asbury Church, at which place and upon which occasion there was a large attendance and the most intense interest manifested. The day was one long to be remembered by all who participated or were present. May we have many more eucb.

A SAD CASE OF DESTITUTION.
3 What Rumor Says.
Several days since a woman called at the residence of Sid. B. Davis, Esq., and told Mrs. Davis that she was suffering for the necessaries of life, and asked that she give her work, which she did, though she was in no need of help at that time. She did so simply to assist the poor woman.. In addition to this, Mrs. Davis, deeply sympathizing with the poor suffering one, accompanied her to her place of abode on North Seventh street above the railroad, and upon reaching which place imagine, her astonishment and the feelings of a kind heart, when she beheld the piteous spectacle of three small helpless children inside an old hut of a stable, almost entirely destitute of clothing and much reduced in flesh for the want of food, the youngest oniy about nine months old. There was nothing else in the stable but an old straw mattress. The husband of the woman she says is in a hospital some place, which place we disremember. Mrs. Davis gave the family clothing and food and gave the woman some work, for which she paid her good wages in money, and is now doing all she can to relieve the suffering family.
This has all been reported to us by reliable parties, and the state ot facts demands the attention of tiie Ladies' Aid Society, and when what we have heard reaches their ears, we have full faith and confidence that the family will be releaved from the abject poverty to which they have been reduced by the vicissitudes of life to which wo all, through disease and other causes, are liable.
If the' representatives of the Society will call on Sid. B. Davis, at his law office, on Main street, or on Mrs. Davis, at their residence
011
We
111
Seventh street, they
will be shown the facts as detailed above, only that the immediate needs of the family under consideration have been supplied by Mrs. Davis.
In addition to this state of facts we will give a rumor that reached our ears yesterday. It was reported to us that not long since, this woman had one of her children run over and severely injured by a baby wagon, which was being drawn along the streets by a careless boy, and that she called at the office of a certain physician in this city, who asked her if she had any money, and upon receiving a negative answer, refused to do anything for the child. She therefore was obliged to call on the father of the boy who did the injury, and he furnished the money to pay the doctor's bill. Such a physician should not receive the patronage of the public, and furthermore should be Ku Kluxed. "We also hear that the woman in question has a brother in the city who owns two houses, and that he realizes good paying rent therefrom, and allows his sister to live in a stable, and her family to starve or live as best they can. We, however, onty give the latter information as we heard it, refusing to believe that there are two so mean and penurious men in our city. We confess that we cannot credit the statements that reached us of the doctor and the brother, without changing our opinion of human nature. Let the Ladies' Aid Society relieve the wants of the family by their heavenly ministrations. Can it be possible that there is such utter want and wretchedness within the corporate limits of our beautiful and prosperous little city of Terre Haute, and that there are two such men residing in our midst as mentioned above?
ust admit that such wretchedness
and poverty does exist, or did not many days since, but we must wait and let the report as to the doctor and brother be investigated and let them be shunned by even the dumb brute.
MAYOR'S COURT.
A Big Sunday's Business.
Yesterday was "an old day for business" in the Mayor's Court, His Honor Alexander Thomas presiding. The "boys iu blue" were busily engaged all day in making arrests and bringing offenders against the majesty of our municipal laws to justice as follows: John Meyers, charged with gaming and keeping a gaming house was fined and costed in the sum of $26. John Link, charged with drunkenness, was fined and costed about $5, in default of the payment of which he was Station Housed.
John Godfrey, an old offender, was charged with being drunk and was found guilty and fined and costed $0.80, in default of which he was Stationed Housed.
Frank Ireland was charged with associating with prostitutes, found guilty, fined and costed $9.25, and in default of the payment of the same was sent up.
Kate and Mat tie Brown were charged with vagrancy, and were fined $5.25 each, and sent to the Station House to board it out.
Michael Sweney, charged with fighting, was found guilty, and fined and costed in the sum of $10.75, which he paid.
William Cookerly, charged with disorderly conduct, was fined and costed $7.25, for which amount he gave security.
George Williams was up on two charges, one for disorderly conduct, for which he was found guilty and fined $30 and costed $9. He was also charged with and found guilty of assault and battery, for which he was fined $25 and costed $11.30.
Thomas Reed was held to bail in the sum of $200 on a charge of throwing a gallon jug of vinegar at one A. C. Lamb, and striking a little daughter of the plaintiff with the same. He will have a hearing before His Honor Mayor Thomas at 2 o'clock P. M. to-day.
THE State Sunday School Convention convenes at the parlors of the Cougrega* tional Church in this city to-morrow, and will no doubt be largely attended, and certainly productive of great good to that most worthy cause, and we hope no effort will be spared on the part of our citizens to entertain the delegates while here, which will be to the advancement of the cause of Sunday schools not only but will sustain our reputation as a hospitable city. Let all our citizens who can possibly entertain even one delegate while in our city, do so.
THERE will be a unionjrayer meeting to-night at 8 o'clock in the basemeut of the Congregational Church, at which all Sunday School teachers are urged to be present,
THE Criminal Court, Thos. B. Long presiding, convened this A. M. pursuant to previous adjournment and after several parties had been duly arraigned, the case of the State vs. George Ford, charged with larceny and burglary was commenced before a jury and by noon nearly all the evidence on behalf of the prosecution had been offered, and the case is proceeding this P.
