OUR SABBATH SCHOOLS.
Reasons for Attending Them. To-morrow morning will usher into existence another feabbath day—the day of rest so observed by all Christians throughout the civilized world. In this city, as in other Christian communities, it will be variously observed. Some will attend worship in the house of God, others will spend the day enjoying the quiet of their homes, while ottiers again will no doubt violate the sanctity of the day by going fishing, swimming, etc.
Of all the appropriate and pleasant places to spend the Sabbath, we know of none more so than in the Sabbath school, where the youthful mind is trained and instructed in the ways of morality and truth—that school more than any and all others where is laid the foundation of all goodness and true greatness. It has been in the Sunday schools of all countries where they have been introduced that our great and good men and women have been instructed in the ways that have made them what they are, more than all other places combined, not excepting the influences ox homes, however, good those influences may have been and what can be said of the past so truly and forcibly, can be still more forcibly, though not more truthfully, said of the present and of the future. Our Sunday schools therefore, being the place where is laid the foundation of goodness and truth, is the place above all others where the young should spend the holy Sabbath day, that their best interests and through them the best interests of the race may be advanced. Every Sunday school in our own beautiful and prosperous little city has a tendency for good. Therefore, letall the children attend Sunday school at some place, and they and the world at large "will be the better for it.
GAYLOR vs. EMMET—A LIE NAILED. —The author of "Our Fritz," Mr. Gaylor, we understand, has brought suit against J. K. Emmet, the actor, at Milwaukee, for alleged damages sustained by the said Gaylor, because of the conduct of the said Emmet being of such a nature at various times and sundry places, as to cause the said Gaylor to lose money in large sums. The plaintiff has written to this city for evidences of Emmet's conduct here, including copies of the Terre Haute Daily GAZETTE, in which we published an expose of the disgraceful actions of Emmet while in our city.
We hear that Mr. Gaylor said while here that he had lost not less than eight thousand dollars through the fault of Emmet, not as an actor, but in other respects. That a minstrel is always a minstrel, and nothing else can be made of him. We don't know what Emmet's conduct has been elsewhere but here,we can truly say, that it was such as to disgrace even the lowest "stock" in a fourth-class minstrel company.
Here in this connection we wish to call attention to an article that appeared in the Indianapolis Journal during our absence, to the effect that we wrote the article we did in regard to Emmet's disgraceful and unbusiness-like conduct in our city, because we did not receive all the complimentary ticketu wo demanded. The statement made by the writer of the article in the Journal was maliciously false and totally without foundation in fact, as we have no doubt Mr. Stan field, the manager of the company, himself would tell any one who would ask him. We told Mr. Stanfield when he left us complimentaries what we were going to write and we kept our word. At this late day we would not call this matter up had we not been absent when the false charge was made.
HINTS WOKTII REMEMBERING IIY THE MUSICALLY INCLINED.—Knowing that there are many aspiring musicians in our city, we suggest the following, hoping thus to'not only confer a favor on the musicians but those who are to be afflicted therewith
Learn, if possible, to play on the organ before doing which it will be necessary to become thorough in the art of punctuation, so that you will have no difficulty in learning the stops.
When you begin to compose, you should be quite composed and when you have completed a piece, try it on the piano if it should prove too small, make a larger piece.
If you find the piano is not your forte, try some other instruments—a jewsharp or a baby whistle, for instance.
Avoid organ swells—they put on airs. Always stick to the right pitch if you use a violin, make your own fiddle stick, unless you are one of the beaux of the time.
You cannot catch fish with a clarinet, nor get any marrow out of a trombone. You may get plenty of notes from an orchestra, although it dou'tgo aloan, but has a leader generally a very fast man, for be beats time.
Of course, we only suggest the above from observation as a listener, and not from actual experience as a musician.
A GRAND Sunday school mass meeting and concert will be given at Dowling Hall to-morrow afternoon at 4 o'clock, which will be conducted by Prof. Foot, of Chicago, a musician of very great ability and National reputation, and who has for some time been leading choirister of a Sunday school in Chicago numbering twelve hundred scholars. He will be assisted by Prof, liolfe, also a musician of great merit and reputation. All the singers and Sunday School scholars and those interested in the glorious Sunday School cause, and in the cause of music are most respectfully invited, and their attendance is kindly solicited. We hope to see Dowling's beautiful and commodious hall crowded to its utmost capacity upon that most eventful occasion.
In the evening there will be a Sunday school mass meeting at Asbury Church, at which there will be music and speeches of a very interesting character. Let the Sunday school cause receive such an impetus as will redound to the honor and glory thereof.

ST. MARY'S INSTITUTE.—The job room of the GAZETTE has the contract of printing the prospectus of St. Mary's Institute, which will job be completed in a few days.
The school is in a more prosperous condition even than ever before, and each succeeding year is receiving the increasing patronage it so richly deserves. May its future only be as progressive upward and onward as its past and present, and unbounded success will be its record. The buildings and grounds are not only beautiful ami pleasant but approximating a paradise.
