The excursion to
Terre
Haute last Sun
day was decided by those who went a success. The summer session of the Highland Graded School closes on to-morrow. The exercises of the graduating class will take place to-morrow evening, and we have no doubt will be very interesting. This school is one of the best in Western Indiana, and reflects great credit upon both teachers and patrons.
The Board of Commissioners have authorized the County Auditor to enter a remitter on the judgment against S. B. Davis and bondsmen, for the amount of tenpercent. penalty and interest thereon, included in the judgment against these men. This is an act of justice to the bondsmen. It was no fault of theirs that robbers stole the people's money. It is hard enough upon them to be compelled to pay the amount stolen, and not be called upon to pay a penalty upon that amount. There is no act of the present Board that will feflect as much credit upon them as this. We hope that they may see proper to release a portion of the principal. To some of the bondsmen this demand will call for the last penny. It beggars Mr. Davis. A tax of 12 cents on the $100 of property in our county, will raise $5,000. This would leave a small amount of property iu the possession of these men of course this is discretionary with the Board. Equity and justice together with charity would ask this. The strict vigor of the law might demand the last penny.
THE Congregational Sunday School had a very pleasant time last evening at the grove of George Brokaw, on South Sixth street. The grounds were beautifully lighted with transparencies and Chinese lanterns, while croquet, swings, Copenhagen and other games delighted the children. Toute's Band was present and furnished good music. That coming from Harry Owen's new silver horn was especially fine. Supper was served at six, when everything good was offered to the children and assembled guests, in the most attractive and inviting way. This is comparatively a new kind of entertainment for the Sunday School children, and has many features to recommend it. We hope it will be repeated.
A BIG STEAL.—Some time during last week twenty-five head of fat stears were turned out of Mr. Anderson's pasture, a short distance north of town, and driven away. The cattle were not missed ior two or three days, when search was at once made. On Saturday they were found in Terre Haute, the thieves having been arrested on suspicion and lodged in jail. On Monday they were taken before Judge Long of the Criminal Court, plead guilty and sentenced to live years in the peniten"ary. Great credit is due the police force of Terre Haute for the apprehension of the criminals.—Rockville Patriot,
The present police force of this city is a thorough and competent one, and we warn our neighboring towns and counties that if they send their thieves or rascals here, they will be detected by our police force, and found in the State's Prison before they are aware of what's the matter.
LAST night the west bound freight train struck a man who was sitting on the track about two miles this side of Carbon, hurting him very severely. It seems he had been to St. Louis, and getting out of money was walking to his home, about three miles east of Carbon, and being very tired sat down to rest, when about two miles from the station, he fell asleep, and the approaching train failed to awake him in time to get off the track. He was brought here, and his wounds cared for by a physician, and this morning returned on a passenger train to his home near Carbon. We could not learn his name.
THE citizens of the Third Ward who were so much opposed to having the colored school kept in the old building of that ward, now say, after a short experience, that the school is orderly and quiet, and that it makes far less noise than the former school did. The children are neither noisy nor unruly. Some of the bad white boys of the neighborhood have wanted to throw stones through the windows of the building, but have been prevented from doing so by a better class of boys. The opinion down there is, that if the children of the school are let alone, there will be no one molested or in anyway contaminated.
ONE of the contributors to the Express is out in an article defending the "roosters," as "gentlemen of elegant leisure," and four associates." We did not know that our Ohio street neighbor kept that sort of company. We did not know that you classed yourself with "roosters, squirts and blackguards," but as you do, we will not misname you any more.
ON to-morrow evening, at 9 o'clock, New York time, a brief dispatch will be sent to all the leading cities of the world from New York, the signature to which will be attached by Professor Morse, the "Father of Telegraph," by his own hand manipulating the instrument. A MAN by the name of Stump, living in the north part of town, had his leg broken in two different places last evening, by the caving in of a cellar which he was engaged in digging. He is reported doing well at last accounts.

TO TIIE LADIES. BALTIMORE, February 17,1870.
I have been a sufierer from Kidney Complaint producing Gravel and those afflictions peculiar to women, prostrating my physical and nervous systems, with a tendency to Consumptive Decline. I was dispondent and gloomy. I tried all "Standard Medicines" with no relief, until I took De Bing's wonderful Remedy. I have taken six bottles, and am now free from that combination of nameless complaints. How thankful I am to be well.
