TERRE HAUTE.

Its Connections with the South) via Evansville & Crawfonlsville, Steamer Fayette and Evansville, Henderson and

Nashville Railroads. On Monday morning last there was a change of time on the Evansville & Crawfordsville Railroad. The train that formerly left at 6:30, now leaves at 5:50f making the run from here to Evansville in four hours and twenty minutes, the quickest time ever made between here and that city. The object of this change and fast time is to make connection at Evansville with the steamer Fayette, which connects at Henderson with the Evansville, Henderson & Nashviile R.It. This is a new and important line of road, and by it we are brought into immediate and direct railroad connection with all the principal cities of the South. Passengers leaving here in the morning arrive in Nashville in time for supper. The road has just been equipped with new and handsome coaches, containing all the advantages of modern improvements.

Mr. Picturu, the Superintendent, is a railroad man of much experience, and is in every way well qualified to operate a road in the most approved manner. This line of road has only been in operation about two months, and many of our citizens are entirely ignorant of its importance. Since the war, Evansville has been growing very rapidly, and is fast absorbing and withdrawing the trade that has been heretofore going to Cincinnati and Louisville for several years the tobacco trade of that place has been larger than that of any other in the State. The outlet to the north, west and east for that city is through Terre Haute. The opening of this line develops many of of the richest sections of Kentucky and Tennessee, and gives them an outlet to all parts of the country through our city it will enable us to supply the same districts with the products of our iron manufactories, and open anew and vast field for the sale of our grain and agricultural products. The completion of this line supplies a want that has long been felt by the great Northwest, for direct communication with the South. This is the most direct route South for all Northern Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa and all the great Northwestern States. Passengers over this road from these States can reach Mobile, all points on the Gulf and the seaboard of the Carolinas, from ten to thirty hours sooner than by any other line of travel. All these things conspire to indicate that this road will soon take its place as one of the great trunk lines of the country running north and south. On the completion of the Evansville, Terre Haute & Chicago Railway, which will take place in a short time, this will add another great feature to the interest and importance of this railroad, making it the great through route from Chicago to Nashville and all points south.

are pleased to hear that the

Fair Grounds will not be let to any more Sunday picnics this season.

No BUSINESS of general interest was transacted yesterday at the meeting of the County Commissioners.

State Sunday School Convention

will meet in this city one week from today. Our citizens should be fully alive to the importance of this meeting, both to do all that can be done to further the purpose of the Sunday Schools of our State, and to lake the very best care of, and show every attention to the delegates from all parts of the State who will be in attendance upon the Convention.

There will be five or six hundred persons from a distance present, and all should be tendered the hospitality of our citizens. The Convention will open on Tuesday and close on Thursday, lasting in all about two days. Very many of our citizens can accommodate two or more persons for that length of time, and we earnestly hope the matter will receive their attentive and prompt action.

Our city never presented a more beautiful appearance than at this season. Let no one of the coming delegates to the State Sunday School Convention, leave our city without seeing every object of attraction and feature of interest, and without being impressed with the idea that we area social friendly, community. Thus, may we introduce our city to the favorable notice of all parts of the State, we shall make friends who will do us good and add to our prosperity.

Every person who comes to our city, and from kind treatment and attention of its citizens, goes away full of good words, concerning it, confers a real value upon us, in that others will come here to live and do business from such a representation as that. Every delegate to the Convention of next week, should be converted into a friend, and will be if we do our part towards it.

School Trustees met last evening

in regular session, at the Council Chamber. A resolution was passed allowing the colored school to be kept in the old Third Ward building until further orders.

Taxes for the year were fixed by the Board and County Commisstoners at 25 cts. for general purposes and 20 cts. for tuition.

It was announced that the commencement exercises of the schools would take place on Friday, June 23. Timely announcement of place of holding the same will be made.

The Board directed a special meeting of the committee, to be held Saturday next, for the purpose of receiving applicants for positions as teachers in the public schools.

A YOUNG man of our acquaintance says he was out walking the other night and meta young lady and gent slowly "wending their way" at a lover's gait, and apparently oblivious of all "save of the one sweet fact" of each other's presence. Before he proceeds a square, our acquaintance meets a woman of middle age, in all the agony of a distressed mother, anxiously inquiring of all, if they have seen her dear child, her daughter. It wasn't well for that young man when the mother came upon them. You hud better tell her mother when you go out to walk next time.
