JOSH BILLINGS.
The Fashionable Woman's Prayer. Strengthen mi husband, and may hiss faith and hiz money hold out to the last.
Draw the lamb's wool of unsuspicious twilight over hiz eyes, that mi flirtations may look to fcim like viktorys, and that mi bills may strengthen his pride in me.
Bless, oh, Fortune, mi krimjw, rats and frizzles, and let thi glory shine on ml paint and powder.
When walk out before the gaze ov vulgar men, regulate mi wiggle, and add nu grace to mi gaiters.
When bow miself in worship, grant that may do it with ravishing elegance, and preserve unto the last the lily-white of my flesh and the taper of my fingers.
Destroy mine enemies with the gaul ov jealousy, and eat thou up with the teeth ov envy all thoze who gaze at my style.
Save me from wrinkles, and foster mi plumpness. Fill mi both eyes, oh, Fortune! with the plaintive pizon ov infatushun, that may lay out mi victims, the men, as as knumb as images graven.
Let the lily and the roze strive together in my cheek, and may mi neck swim like a goose on the buzzum ov krystal water.
Enable me, oh Fortune to wear shoes still a little smaller, and save me from korns and bunyons.
Bless Fanny, mi lapdod, and rain down bezoms of destruckshun upon those who would hurt a hair ov Hektor, mi kitten. ^mile, oh, Fortune most sweetly upon Dick, mi kanary, and watch over, with the fondness of a mother, mi two lilywhite mice vtfith red eyes.
Enable the poor to shirk for themselves, and save me from all missionary beggars.
Shed the light ov thi countenance on mi kammel's hair shawl, mi lavender silk, mi point lace' and mi necklace of diamonds, and keep the moths out ov mi sable, beseech thee, O Fortune!
The Alexandria Fire—Relics. The destruction of the old market building in Alexandria, Va., by fire a few nights, ago was an event of interest to the whole country. The building was constructed in 1749. In the third story was the Alexandria Museum, in which were deposited many relics of the early days of the city, which were of great interest and value, associated as they were with the Revolutionary War and the distinguished individuals who bore a prominent part in it. There was the walking-cane and spurs of Washington, flag of his body-guard in 1776, portrait of himself and wife, Paul Jones' flag, the suit in which Tecumseh was killed, bier on which Washington's body was borne to the grave, the flag of Morgan's Alexandria company of war rifles, a small cavalry flag of Lee's Revolutionary Legion, and many other relics, as dear to the country at large as they were"j5reekuis to Alexandria.
The room occupied by Alexandria Washington Lodge-,-No. 22, of Masons, was built in 1802, and was first occupied September 16th, of the same year. The valuable portrait of Gen. George Washington (who was Master of the Lodge in 1794), painted in 4787 by Williams, of Philadelphia, the chair used by him as Master, the portrait of LaFayette, the magnificent service of glassware, the original charter of Lodge No. 22, dated in 1788, and the valuable relics so much prized by the fraternity, were saved
THE Indianapolis Sentinel says a story of olden times in this county was thus told us by Clerk Wallace Many years ago there was an old hardened wretch living in the county, wicked beyond Presbyterian hope—"onery" dilapidated, licentious and drunken. One day he was attracted to a camp-meeting, and, drunk as he was, at once became interested in the minister's fervid appeal for sinners to turn and seek salvation. The old man still had a good streak left in his depraved carcass, and as the speaker preached and exhorted in the good old impassioned eloquent style, the tears rolled down the aged sinner's cheeks, and his drunken form shook with emotion. Finally the minister closed with the appeal, "Come forward all you .low, God-forsake® sinners come, just now." The old wretch could stand it no longer, and slinging his "wamus" he yelled "Clar the track! clar the track! Here I come! a poor, Godforsaking d—n s—n of a b—h stand from under!" The preacher met him/ gave one look and then said, "Brethren, let us look to the Lord and then be dismissed.'.'
From the Titusville Herald.
Perfectly Happy, for Fifteen Thousand Dollars. A few days since one of our weli-to-do oil operaters, who has lived long and prospered, and has a few quarts of spot oil on hand, in cases emergency, received a letter written in a delicate feminine hand, from an eastern city, in which the fair writer paid: "I hear you are very wealthy, and would not miss a few dollars or so, and asrl am on the eve of getting married to a poor but industrious young man, I thought maybe you would send me a little money. If you will send me fifteen thousand dollars it would make me perfectly happy." Our friend, at the time he received this letter, did not happen to have more than eight thousand dollars in his vest pocket, and that he was about to invest in a large sized Government bond for his boy to paper his kite with, otherwise he would have complied with the young lady's request aud rendered her "perfectly happy."
NEGRO SUPERSTITION. The negro population in the eastern portion of the city are much excited over a report brought over by a "reliable contraband" from Beaufort, S. C., that a negro baby was born there a few days since, and immediately "opened its mouth and
spake," warning the people to prepare for eternity, as the workl would be destroyed within three days. After this remarkable feat this eminent infant died. A further report says that a letter from Heaven was round upon the little nigger.—Savannah Republican.
MR. BERGH lately received a visit from a lady who said: "Mr. Bergh, I am worth $18,000, and I have come to bestow it all by will on your society oblige me by preparing the necessary papert." The papers were duly prepared.»

AND
KILLING HER.—
The Chicago Times tells the following story: "In Wisconsin, at a locality called Plum City, lives a Swede, who, having this spring but one ox, persuaded his wife to carry one end of the yoke in plowing, while he held the plow and their boy drove. The woman labored at this extraordinary employment for two days, but was then compelled to quit it and take to her bed, on account of having ruptured an internal organ in her efforts to keep her end of the yoke even. In two days after she died, the physician called by the neighbors-finding it impossible, when he reached her, to do any thing for her relief."

•ad Gen. ti, Aw Franclico, Cal., and W tad 31 ComJB«r«» St, N.Y, Vinegar Bitters are not a vile Fancy Drink Made of Poor Rum, Whisky, Proof Spirits and Reluse Liquors doctored, spiced and sweetened to please the taste, called "Tonics, "Appetizers," "Restorers," &c., that lead the tippler on to drunkenness and ruin, but are a true Medicine, made from the Native Roots and Herbs of California, free from all Alcoliolic Stimulants. They are the GREAT 11I.OOD PURIFIER and A LIFE GIVING PRINCIPLE, a perfect Renovator and Invigorator ot the System, carrying off all poisonous matter and restoring the blood to a healthy condition. No person can take these Bitters according to directions and remain long unwell, provided their bones are not destroyed by mineral poison or other means, and the vital organs wasted beyond the point of repair.
Tbey are a gentle Purgative as well as a Tonic, possessing also, the peculiar merit ot acting as a powerful agent in relieving Congestion or inflammation of the Liver, and all the Visceral Organs.
FOR FEMALE COMPLAINTS, whether in young or old, married or single, at the dawn of womanhood or at the turn cf life, these Tonic Bitters have no eqnal.
For Inflammatory and Chronic Rheu* raatism and Goat, Oyspepsia or Indigestion, Billions, Remittent and Intermittent Fevers, Diseases of the Blood, Liver, Kidneys and Bladder, these Bitters have been most successful. Such Diseases are caused by Vitiated Blood, which is generally produced uy derangement of the Digestive Organs.
DYSPEPSIA OR INDIGESTION Headache, Pain in the Shoulders, Coughs, Tightness of the Chest, Dizziness, Sour Eructations of the Stomach, Bad taste in the Mouth, Billious Attacks, Palpitation of the Heart, Inflamation of the Lungs, Pain in the region ot the Kidneys, and a hundred other painful symptoms, are the offsprings of Dyspepsia.
They invigorate the Stomach and stimulate the torpid liver and bowels, which render them of unequalled efficacy in cleansing the blood of all impurities, and imparting new life and vigor to the whole system.
FOR SKIN DISEASES, Eruptions. Tetter, Salt Rheum, Blotches, Spots, Pimples, Pustules, Boils, Carbuncles, Ring Worms, Scald Head, Sore Eyes, Erysiplas, Itch, Scurfs, Discolorations of the Skin, Humors and Diseases of the Skin, of whatever name or nature, are literally dug up and carried out, of the system in a short time by the use of these Bitters. One bottle in such cases will convince the most incredulous of the curative effect

PIN, TAPE, and other WORMS, lurking in the system of so many thousands, are effectually destroyed and removed. For fulldtiectlons, read carefully the circular around each bottlejprinted in four languages—English, German, French and

npon the pit of the stomach ofa child, will cause the bowels to be emptied, and alloeskept in contact with a raw surface will produce same effect as if the medicinehad been taken into the stomach. So said the great Dr. Clutterbaek. Very many persons know the operation of croton oil when placed upon the tongue, to say the least, it is speedy. Purgatives in some sha^ e, are indispensable in the practice of medicine. Many diseases are incurable without them and all of the simple disorders of the system are benefitted by their use. The great desideratum in their admintotia« tion has been to get one which has either laxative or purgative, as was needed—always mild but always efficient—and the use of which did not make it necessary to continue its use. This has at last been done. EDWARD

Piiii^J fulfill all the requirements of the case. They area laxative, yet sure purgative, yet mild, in small doses, they meet the first want in large doses, they fulfill the latter but in whatever quantity given, they create no necessity for they create no morbid state of the alimentary canal tube, but leave it cleansed and urge it to renewed health. They are, in brief, a blessing to the individual who suffers from constipation and needs a laxative, and are indispensable to him who Is parched with fever and requires a purgative. Use them, all you who value health. ..«-•
Helminthologyv
A distinguished physiologist has declared that it seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodie should be peopled with them. The huge whale is often driven to madess by an almost invisible member of the tribe of vermes. The history of Helminthology abounds in illustrations of the influence of worms in the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of men, tln-ir obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states ol the animal economy, all tend to render them an object of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the study of these entoaa with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedily, safely and permanently expelling them lroin the human sytem. WARD WINDER'S MOTHKR'S
WORM SYRUP is a

This renowned French man Sid more pefhajte to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill in detecting the nature and form ot the malady before him, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vi\id pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affcctionsof the air passages still lie left but few words concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better how to manage any one of these chest troubles he knows the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of the many potent agents which enter into the combination of fkltoard Wilders Compound Extrati of Wild Cherry, and knows that with the useoi this truly greai medicine he is fully master ot the situation. He has no fear in the presence ot croup, no misgivings at the advance of bronchitis: he grapples wtth consumption, and subdues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Hence every family should always have this in valuable medicine at liandj ,.
Indigestion
'Which makes sleep a palu, and turns its balm •. to wormwood," is. we all know, the most. Common''6? all the disorders of the stomach. It is also the most obstinate.
It has
been the most written about.
No disease presents such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency, which regulate natural events they bother the doctor, and can only be read by him who is skilled in the book of nature. It is self evident that me ainerent iorms or luuigestlOn are to be met by corresponding methods of CUT®. It has been said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying to each individual case its precise and as it were, its individual cure. This is the object which every conscientious physician pursues unceasingly, and never can rest satisfied until he has overtaken. ward Wilder's Stomach Bitters, their body being the purest of copper-distil led whisky, make* this object attainable alike to all. They area specific—the disease specifying the remedy, not the remedy the disease. They are a combination of substances which meet the speciality of the disorder by a corresponding speciality of cure. They should be kept in every well-regu-lated family they are indispensable.to healthf
Gaudiaima Hirer-
The British army when it advanced on Talavara and fought the celebrated battle, whicb was followed by a retreat into the plains, lort more men by the malarial diseases contracted on the banks of the Gaudiana than by the bullets of the enemy. They died by thousands All Europe believed that the invading army was extirpated. Yet malaria diseases are no more common in Europe than in our own country they exist throughout the length and breadth of our land-everywhere at some time and in some shape are we made to feel the sickening influence of miasm. The three great ». actors in this equation of disease are solar heat, moisture, and vegetable decomposition. -Xh« tiio, if separated, are harmless together they are more potent for evil than any other known agents so long as they exist, jost so long will we have need of a medicine which will overcome their pernicious effects, so long will itba necessary to have a remedy capableofmeetlng and beating the insidious enemy. Of all known agents for this purpose, none is to compare With Edward Wilder'* ChOl Tonic, the master of every form aud variety and grade and degree of malarial disease and of miasmatic poison. Try it, all you who are suffering from any form of ague and fever or chills and fever, as a core is guaranteed in every case. r»
