THE GREAT CANON OF THE YELLOWSTONE.

An Iuteresting Description of

N. P. Langford,

iu Scribner's Monthly

for May,says: "The great falls are at the head of one of the most remarkable canons in the world—A gorge through volcanic rocks 50 miles long, and varying from 1,000 to nearly 5,000 feet in depth. In its descent through this wonderful chasm, the river falls almost 3,000 feet. At one point, where the passage has been worn through a mountain range, our hunters assured us it was more than a vertical mile in depth, and the river, broken into rapids and cascades, appeared no wider than a ribbon. The brain reels as we gaze into the profound and solemn solitude. We shrink from the dizzy verge appalled, glad to feel the solid earth under our feet, and venture

except with forms extended and

faces barely protruding over the edge of the precipice. The stillness is horrible. Down, down, down, we see the river attenuated to a thred, tossing1its miniature waves, and dashing with puny strength, the massive walls which imprison it. All access to its margin is denied, and the dark gray rocks, hold it in dismal shadows. Even the voice of its waters iu their convulsive agony cannot be heard.

HOME, the great spiritualist, has come to grief in St. Petersburg. It appears that at a scatice held on the 22d of March, a committee of the Professors of the University provided a table made of plate-glass, while a white sheet was spread on the floor, so that the light from two candles placed on the glass surface brilliantly illuminated all the space beneath and the feet of those who were seated could be seen by all present. Fifteen or twenty minutes after the beginning of the seance Mr. Home remarked a visible oscillation of the table, which affected the flame of the candles standing on it. One of the committee explained this by the trembling of the hands, on the table, and it soon ceased. Next Mr. Home called attention to the increased rapidity of his pulse but it appeared that there was an increase in the number of pulsations of several other gentlemen present, caused by the heightened temperature of the room. Thirty or forty minutes afterward Mr. Home declared that he felt a peculian current in the air, which he took as a precursor of coming pheomena but closing an open pipe put a stop to that. Mr. Home then declared that lie heard some light raps on the table, but no one else was able to hear them. The committee remained at the table from half-past 9 until twenty minutes past 11 without one of those manifestations appearing which, it

The business success of cities and towns depeud upon the business capacity and industry of the citizens more than upon the location and natural advantages. It is necessary that there be attention to some speciality if an individual succeeds so, there must be unity and co-operation upon the part of the citizens of a city, whose commercial interests are to prosper.

SOME naturalists argue that the migration of insects and creeping things must always have taken place by land, as it would be impossible for them to cross great breadths of water. Mr.

caught a locust 370 miles from land moths captured 260 miles from the coast of Portugal have been exhibited at a meeting

of

the Zoological Society, and

recently the captain of a WHITER caught a white butterfly 400 miles from the Azores. It was vigorous, for on being placed in a drawer, it laid eggs. From these and other instances, Mr. Wallace infers that, under favorable circumstances, insects would be able to cross even greater expanse* of ocean.

The man who invests his money in establishments which produce plows, threshers, hubs, spokes, furniture, engines, paper, reapers, drills, woolen goods, and so on, is always a local and general public benefactor. The solemn grandeur of the scene surpasses description. It must be seen it be felt. The sense of danger with which it impresses you is harrowing in the extreme. You feel the absence of sound, the oppression

absolute silence. If you could only hear that gurgling river, if you could see a living tree in the depth beneath you, if a bird would fly past, if the wind would move any object in the awful chasm, to break for a moment the solemn silence that reigns there it would relieve that tension of the nerves which the scene has excited, and you would rise from your prostrate condition and thank God that He had permitted you to gaze, unharmed, upon the majestic display of natural architecture. As it is, sympa tliizing in spirit with the deep gloom of the scene, you crawl from the dreadful verge, scared lest the firm rock give way beneath, and precipitate you into the horrid gulf."

Helminthology.

A distinguished physiologist hasdeclaredthaf it seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodi® should be peopled withthem. The huge whale is often driven to madess by an almost invisible member of the tribe of vermes. The history of. Helminthology abounds in illustrations of the influence of worms in the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms.. The frequency of worms in the bodies of their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states ot the animal economy, all tena to render them an object of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the study of these entoza with the view of discovering some substance whlc ,• was capable of speedily.safely and permanently expelling them trom the human sytem. No disease presents such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all^ the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency, which regulate natural events they bother the doctor, and can only be read by him who is skilled in the book of nature. It is self evident that the different forms of indigestion are to, be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has been said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying to each individual case its precise and as it were, its individual cure. This is the object which every conscientious physician pursues unceasingly, and never can rest satisfied until he has overtaken. Edward Wilder'* Stomach Bitters, their body being the purest of copper-distilled whisky, makes this object attainable alike to all. They area

The tiio, if separated, are harmless together they are more potent for evil than any otlier known agents so long as they exist, just so long^ill we have need of a medicine which will overcome their pernicious effects, so long will it be necessary to have a remedy capable of meeting and beating the insidious enemy.
