EVIL" at Pence's Hall

THE City Council convenes this evening in regular session.

THE potato bugs in the vicinity of this city are "too numerous to mention."

"SWIMMING time" has come, and the delight of the boys is exceedingly great.

MRS. BALLOU will lecture on the "Social Evil" at Pence's Hall this evening.

THE "Buckeye Cash" store was beautifully and artistically decorated to-day, in honor of our honored dead.

"OUR FRITZ" Wednesday evening and the evening following will "Dutch Immigrate" at the Opera House.

LADIES complain of the half-fledged bipeds who stand about cjuircli doors as the congregation leaves, and no wonder.

THE Journal says that the State Association of Congregational churches convene in this city Thursday evening, continuing in session over Sunday.

WE trust our citizens are making liberal arrangements to entertain the delegates of the State Sunday School Convention, soon to assemble in this city.

TIME IS MONEY.—A person, hearing that "time is money," became desirious of learning how many ygars it would take "to pay a little debt of a hundred dollars!"

BUSINESS generally will be suspended this afternoon, and we hope till patriots will participate in the imposing and solemn duties of decorating the graves of our fallen dead.

FATAL PARALYTIC STROKE.—Colonel Jesse I. Alexander, formerly revenue collector in this city, was stricken with paralysis last evening which resulted fatally before morning. ..i....

BAD cases of the "Grecian Bend" are not yet among the fossilized customs of fashion, as was evidenced on Saturday afternoon, by one of our city school teachers. She wore it in pink.

"OURROOM-MATE" who was out walking last night with a dear "one of his heart," said the night was glorious— that his enjoyment was unbounded— but her's was not—her shoes were too tight.

THERE are some men who will spend twenty-five cents for three cigars and then borrow a copy of the GAZETTE from some subscriber to read, when they can have it every evening for a week for twenty cents.

"A MILTON Gold Jewelry Company" from London and New York, opens Friday, June 2d, on new American principles, in^the store opposite the postoffice. Call and see the largest stock west of New York."

PURCHASES at auctions are rarely 6ar-gains but a counsel's profits are. Troubles are the keys to silvery locks. A miller is the last man to give bran new ideas. Age and experience give many a "wrinkle."

We publish the GAZETTE about "two hours earlier than'usual, in order that we may, the more fully, "write up" the Decoration ceremonies to-morrow, and we trust our readers will overlook any shortcomings in the local columns toin consequence. ..

OSE HUNDRED DOLLARS REWARD.

"A Long Faced and Lantern-Jawed" ExIIusband Wanted. The following advertisement we publish free of charge, because of the anxiety and impecmiio.sity of the advertiser and the value of the article advertised. The subscriber, Nancy Tuttle, is evidently much in earnest, and is having the advertisement inserted in all the papers throughout the land on the same terms we insert it in the column of the GAZETTE, the readers of which are requested to keep an eye open to the advent of such a character amongst them. Of course, this neighborhood will be closely watched, and if such a looking individual puts in an appearance he will be "shadowed" and "gobbled "ONE HUNDKKD DOLLARS REWARD"— For the apprehension of Enos Tuttle, a tall man, about fifty years of age, has considerablo money and a high forehead, long face, and lantern-jawed mail, a bad man

a list like a giant, and has

often beat me, and I want him to end his days in the panitcntiary where lie belongs, and he wears a grey coat with a very large mouth, and one blue eye, and one blind blue eye, and a hideous looking man, and now living with the seventh woman, and me having one child to him, and he has gone off, and I want him brought slap up in the law with blue pants. Ite ought to bo arrested, and has a hundred dollars of my money, and a bald headed rascal, full of flattery and conceit, and she is a bad woman, and lier little girls call him 'papa,' and is called Eliza Jane Tillis, and a boy blind of an eye, and he is not a man who has got any too much sense, nor her. And he stole one hundred dollars from me and some ot my gold and silver, and ought to be caught, and I will never live with him again, no, never, he is a disgrace, and I would like to have him caught up and compelled to maintain me and his child, as I am his lawful wedded wife, and have the certificate of marriage in M3' possession. NANCY TUTTLE.

FINT/KYVILLE, PA., April, 1871.

MAYOR'S COURT.—Dan Tucker was appropriately fined and costed, on charge of drunk and disorderly, yesterday afternoon.

John Burton, was fined and costed in the sum of $13 yesterday, on two charges, as we understand, one of which was for "caving in" the "stove pipe hat" of'some gentleman.

This morning lie was again up before His Honor, charged with insulting several ladies in a very gross manner as they were passing quietly along by the corner of the dry groods establishment of Tuell, Ripley & Deming. His language was very obscene and disgraceful, so much so indeed, that he preferred pleading guilty, than to have the witnesses testify. He was fined and costed $20, making fines and costs for two days about $33, for all of which he gave security. The verdict of all who knew of the case was, served him right.

SEVERE ACCIDENT.—The storm which visited our city yesterday was very severe south of the city, and as a Mr. Doring, who teaches the Greenwood school, which is not far distant from the city, in the McComb neighborhood, was fastening the door upon the approach of the storm, the was transom blown down upon him with such force as to break his leg in two places, cut his neck severely by the glass, and bruised and cut his body in a most shocking manner. Dr. Thompson was called in and dressed his wounds, and since the injured man has been doing as well as could be expected.

No USE TO WAIT.—"Snacks" of the Sentinel and the "tripe fiend" of the Journal are quarreling over a nest of young rabbits at Indianapolis. The varociouscusses are anxious to indulge in

a

rabbit "free lunch"and don't want to wait for the little creatures to grow up to a sufficient size to make them a "square meal." If that is what they are waiting for it is useless waiting, for the rabbits would have to be as large as three year old bullocks to make a "square meal" for the "tripe fiend" and "Snacks."

THE attraction of the day to passers by the mammoth and elegant dry goods establishment of Messrs. Warren, Hoberg & Co., has been the beautifully, appropriately and artistically decorated show windows of that institution, in honor of our fallen dead. The artistic taste of Harry Whipple is well displayed in the general arrangement of the Decoration there. Harry did the business, and It is characteristic of him.

A COUNTRY paper tells of a beautiful, amiable, fascinating, and immensely wealthy young lady in a village in the country, who carefully conceals the knowledge of her wealth, wears cheap clothes, and works in a milliner shop, waiting for an interesting young man to woo and win her "for herself alone." There will not be a milliner left in that village in three months.

f-

DON'T forget "Our Fritz," at the Opera House to-morrow evening. It will be the, entertainment of the serio-comic that ever visited this city. J. K. Emmett, in this special character is unrivalled. Reserve seats are being sold with great rapidity, and there is every indication that the house will be crowded upon tomorrow evening.

PERSONAL.—Arthur Pickett, representing the great drug house of Kelly & Edwards, Boston, and formerly advertising agent of T. H. Helmbold, of Buchu fame, is stopping at the Terre Haute House. He has the largest and finest assortment of articles iu the drug and fancy toilet line we have ever seen in charge of a traveling man.

THE rain yesterday was welcomed by all classes of our citizens, which can't always be said of rains, even in as well regulated communities as our own. The storm and rain was very severe in this city, and more especially in the southern part of the city and vicinity, while a few miles east of town the dust was scarcely settled.

THE following programme for the observance of wedding anniversaries seems to be generally adopted thrcughout the country: First anniversary, iron fifth anniversary, wooden tenth anniversary, tin fifteenth anniversary, crystal twentieth anniversary, china twentyfifth anniversary, linen fortieth anniversary, woolen. :~q: -:-v. iS" 1 '''4:

A LEX ANDKR—At liis residence, near this city, on Tuesday morning, May :10, of apoplexy, Coi„. J. I. AI.KXAXDKK. lint yesterday Col. Alexander was in his usual health, to-day lie is shrouded for the grave. But few men had warmer friends and fewer enemies. lie had a noble heart, and was full of generous impulses. He lived for his friends, and died regretted by a host ol them. All who know him, loved him, and those who loved him now mourn his departure. But he is gone. On the day that the nation strews flowers on the graves of her honored dead, lie departed to join his battle-scared comrades in a world where the roar of cannon is hushed by the songs of the redeemed, and the shout of victory springs from the consciousness of a life everlasting.

Fair thee well, old friend. May the future be to thee, all that the best have ever hoped for, or the most enthusiastic ever dreamed of. It is given to man once to die, and after that happiness. _,.• "To die—to sleep— '•1:1 No more and, by a sleep, to say we end The heart-ache, and the thousand natural shocks That flesh is heir to —'t is a consummation Devoutly to be wish'd."

Empire Mutual Life.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., May 27, 1S71. Editor Tcrre Haute Daily Gazette: Our attention has been called to articles in your paper of the 24th, 25th and 26th, two of which were signed B. F. Havens and the other by Oscar Rankin, relating to the Empire Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York, in which Mr. B. F. Havens charges the Empire with not having paid an insurance of $1,000 on the life of one Dixon Chambers, of Terre Haute. We simply ask that the public suspend judgment in this case until the/acts are fully brought out, which will be in a short time. We assure all concerned, in the mean time, that if the Chambers claim proves to be a just claim it will be paid, if it is not a just claim (and the Company is very grossly mistaken if it is) it will not be paid, as no Company has a right to squander money on unjust claims, aud thereby deprive its policy holders of just so much of their dividends.

Yours etc., C. G. WARD & SON, Managers.

I TO THE LADIES. BALTIMORE, February 17, 1870. I have been a sufferer from Kidney Complaint producing Gravel and those afflictions peculiar to women, prostrating my physical and nervous systems, with a tendency to Consumptive Decline. I was dispondent and gloomy. I tried all "Standard Medicines" with no relief, until I took De Bing's wonderful Remedy. I have taken six bottles, and am now free from that combination of nameless complaints. How thankful I am to be well.
