Here is one which savors of hyperbole: "Here rest the remains of Mrs. Ann Floyer, wife of Richard Kloyer, of Thistle ({rove, in this parish, died 8th May, 18

2:i.

God hctih chosen her as a pattern for the. other Angela." On a good wife, written by her husband "Here lies my poor wife, much lamented

She's happy, aiut I'm contented." Oil a couple not distiuguised for harmony "Here lies Thomas—and his wife,

Who led a pretty jarring Hie But all is ended—(Jo you see, He holds his tongue—and so does she." In a church-yard near Newmarket lie buried, uear each other, the two wives of Thomas Sexton, who has placed upon the tombstone of one this epitaph "Here lies the body of Sarah Sexton, The was a good soul, and never vexed one, Hut I can't say as much ofherattlie nextstone."

Professional epitaphs are sometimes clever and satirical. The lawyers have come in for their share of biting epigrams from the timeof Shakspeare down. Here is one from Moore's "Memories:" "Here lies John Shaw,

Attorney at law, And when hedied The devil cried: Give us your paw, John Shaw, Attorney at law."

An eccentric physician named Thomas Orosfield, who died at Loudon in 1802, wrote for his own tombstone the following lines: "Beneath this stone Tom. Crosfleld lies, Who cares not now who laughs or cries He laughed when sober, and when mellow, Was a havuin searum, heedless fellow, He gave to none designed offense, So 'Honi soil qui mal penxe.'

In the literature of epitaphs, it is singular how large a proportion belong to the class of whimsical or aosurd. Here is one on a Highland soldier "Here lies Alexander McPherson,

He was a most superior person He was six feet too, without a shoe, And he was slew at Waterloo." On a man killed by a fall from a load of hay: "Man's life's ft vapor and full of es

Grave Literature.

The antiquity of epitaphs is as well attested as their immense variety. Many centuries before the Christian era inscriptions on the tombs of remarkable persons were common, and still exist among the curiosities of early literature. The most ancient epitaph which has come down to us, perhaps, is that which Hardanaptvlus, about 876, B. C'., ordered to be engraved upon his lomb, and which was still visible in the time of Alexander, 54M years later. It ranthu9:

uSar-

danapalus built Anchiale and Tarsus in one day. Go, passenger, eat, drink and rejoice, for tiie rest is nothing."

It is not, perhaps, surprising that the oldest recorded epitaph should beat once an echo of tiie Epicurean philosophy and the most Invincible skepticism.

The monument erected at Thermophe, 4Si) years before Christ, to commemorate the iSpartan heroes who fell at that celebrated pass, bore an epitaph remarkable for its implicity and force. It was composed by tiie poet .Simonides, and reads: "(Jo, traveler, and tell of Lacedyemon, that we died here ill obedience to her sacred laws."

Epictetus, the ancient stoic philosopher, who lived in the time of Nero, and whose "Morals," are still the delight of wise men, had the following inscription upon his tomb: "Epictetus, who lies here, was a slave and a cripple, poor as the beggar in the proverb, and the favorite of heaven."

Here is Kobert Burns' epitaph 011 a friend A11 honest man lies here at rest

As e'er God with his image blest The friend of man, the frend of truth, The friend of ag and guide to youth: Few hearts like his, with virtue warmed, Few heads with knowdedge so informed If there is another world, lie lives in biiss If there is none, he made the most of this." Among the most curious of epitaphs are those composed by bereaved husbands 011 the loss of their wives. Here sire a few of the less hackneyed specimens "My wife lies here beneath

Alas! from me she has flown. She was so good that Death Would have her for his own." Iu a churchyard in Kent, England, is the following: "To the memory of my four wive*, who all died within the space of ten years, hut more perticktcr to the lactMrs. Tally Home, who has left me and four dear children. She was a good, sober, and clean soul, and may I soon go to her, A. D. 1732. "Dear wives, If you and I all go to heaven. The Lord bo blessiid, fo-- there we shall be even." "WILLIAM JOY HORNE, Carpenter."

He cuts a caper, and down he goes." Another Highlander epitaph runs thus: "Here lies interred a man of micht

His name is Malcom Dowail He lost his life one market uicht By falling off' his fowail." On a child dying at the age of three weeks: "It in so soon that I am done for,

I wonder that I was begun lor." In Clapton churchyard is this epitaph 011 a young woman, aged fifteen, who died in childbed: "Fourteen years I was a maid,

Twelve months I was a wife, One day I was a mother, And so I end my life." Epitaph on a notorious gambler: "Here lies G., waiting for thelast trump."

Charles Mathews was guilty of the following, on a victim of late suppers: "O iite well at 10, had a party to sup with me To bed went at 1, aud ati 'twas all up with me.

A poor fish-woman dying at Brighton, aged seventy-seven, was buiied with this

opitapI ur(wj„kles, periwinkles! Was ever her cry 8h« labored to live, roor and honest to die.

At the last day again How her old eyes will twinkle For 110 more will she cry

Periwinkle! periwinkle!"

Here is one from California: "Here lies thebody of Jeems Humbrick who was accidentally shot on the bank of the pacus river by a young man lie was accidentally shot with one of the large colt's revolver with no stopper for the cock to rest on it was one of U10 old-fashioned kind brass mounted and of such is the kingdom ofheaven."

But the briefest epitaph of which we over heard, aud the best, was the following, ordered by a literary gentleman, lately deceased, to be engraven 011 his tombstoue: "Finis."

Last week it lady returned home in the evening aud heard some npiseina, jdiy

room usually occupied by herself and her husband. The door being locked she was reduced to the keyhole to which she applied her eye. 8he saw the figure of a woman standing bjr her side was the husband of the jealous wife, actually engaged in adjusting a shawl upon the shoulders of the intruding female. Taking a shotgun, she forced open the door and shot the woman in the back. The husband screamed, the wife fainted. On her return to coiis-eiousuess, mutual explanations followed. The body of the woman who was shot was brought in, and it was seen to be a dummy. The Virginian says the husband is a dry goods merchant, and had brought the image home to repair the damage it had sustained by exposure.

upon the pit of the stomach of a child, will cause the bowels to be emptied, and alloes kept in contact with a raw surface will produce same efleet as if the medicine had been taken into the stomach. So said the great Dr. Clutterback. Very many persons know the operation of croton oil when placed upon the tongue, to say the least, it is speedy. Purgatives in souie sha^e, are indispensable in the practice of medicine. Many diseases are incurable without them and all of the simple disorders of the system are benefitted by their use. The great desideratum in theii administration has been to get one which has either laxative or purgative, as was needed—always mild but always efficient—and the use of which did not make it necessary to continue its use. This bus at last been done.

llelminthology.

A distinguished physiologist hasdeclared that it seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodie* should be peopled withthein. The huge whale is otten driven to madesa by an almost invisible member of the tribe of vermes. The history of Ilelmiutliology abounds in illustrations of the lnlluence of worms iu the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of men, their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states ol the animal economy, all tend to render them an object of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the study of these eutosa with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedily, safely and permanently expelling tliem Irom the human sytem.

Dr. Laennec.

This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill in detecting the nature aud form of the malady before him, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affections of the air passages still he left but few words concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better how to manage any oue of these chest troubles he knows the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of the many potent agents which enter into the combination of JSdward Wilder'* Compt/und Extract of Wild Ctierry, and knows that with the use ox this truly great medicine he is fully master ol the situation. He has no fear in the presence ot croup, no misgivings at the advance of bronchitis he grapples wtth consumption, and subdues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Hence every family should always have this invaluable medicine at handj.

Indigestion,

"Which makes sleep a pain, and turns its balm to wormwood," Is, we all know, the most, common of all the disorders of the stomach. It is also the most obstinate. It has been the most written about. No disease presents such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency, which regulate natural events they bother the doctor, and can only be read by him who is skilled in the book of nature. It is self evident that the different forms of indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has been said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying to each individual case its precise and as it were, its indi fidual cure. This is the object which every conscientious physician pursues unceasingly, and never can rest satisfied until he has overtaken. Kdward Wilder'* Stomach Bitter», their body being the purest of copper-distilled whisky, makes this object attainable alike .to all. They are a specific—the disease specifying the remedy, the remedy the disease. They are a combination of substances which meet the speciality of the disorder by a corresponding speciality ot cure. They should be kept in every well-regu-lated family they are indispensable to health'

Gaudianna River.

The British army when it advanced on Talavara and fought the celebrated battle, which was followed by a retreat into the plains, lost more men by the malarial diseases contracted on the banks of the Gaudiana than by the bullets of the enemy. They died by thousands All Europe believed that the invading army was extirpated. Yet malaria diseases are no more common in Europe than in our own country they exist throughout the length and breadth of our laud—everywhere at some time and In some shape are we made to feel the sickoning influence of miasm. The three great actors in this equation of disease are solar heat, moisture, and vegetable decomposition. Tho tiio, if separated, are harmless together they are more potent for evil than any other known agents so long as they exist, just so long will we have need of a medicine which will overcome their pernicious effects, so long will it be necessary to have a remedy capable of meeting and beating the insidious enemy. Of all known agents for this.pufpose, none is to compare With Edward Wilder's Chill Tonic, the master of every form aud variety and grade and degree of malarial disease and of miasmatic poison. Try It, all you who are suffering from any form of ague and fever or chills and fever, as a cure is guaranteed in every case, cC

St. Louis Hospital, Paris.

This ancient Institution Is one ot the largest, and to the medical student, the most interesting of the many public charities which adorn the gay capitol of the French. It receives within its walls annually thousands of sick poor. A considerable portion of the building is set apart lor patients suffering with diseases of the skin, and every patient, old or young, is taking potash in some shape, and Honduras sarsaparilla in some form. They were esteemed by the renowned physicians who had charge of the skin department as well-specific in almost every variety of cutaneous disease, whether of rheumatic or scrofulous or simple origin. They were given in tetter, ringworm, nettle-ash, roseash ,'jpimples, scrofuia, ulcers, old sores, falling of the hair, etc. In all they did good, in uiost they effected a cure. But it has remained for Edward Wilder'* SarmpariUa and Potash to perform the most remarkable cures awarded to any known medicine. It possesses virtues shared by no other combination of these substances. It la a therapeutic marvel. Against all the disease* at which it is aimed It is simply resistless it never fails. See to it that you suffer not on* day longer with any of the ills which it cures. Get it at once.
