The Antiquity of Invention. The most ancient invention is that of the needle whether the credit of this invention is due to Adam and Eve, we know not, but we do know that the Bible says "they sewed fig-leaves together, and made themselves aprons." To sew without a needle would be an impossibility, therefore they must have invented one whether from a thorn, shaystick, or fish-bone, is also a matter of doubt. How ancient then is the trade of dressmaking, and when we look at the fashionably dressed woman of today, and reflect that all the dress, finely, etc., is the result of the combined thought, industry and perseverence of dressmakers of nearly 0,000 years, is to be wondered that she is "fearfully and wonderfully made?"
To Noah is attributed the invention of wine, 2347 B. C. Ale was known at least 404 B. C., and beer is mentioned by Xenophon 401 B. C. Backgammon, the most ancient of our games, was invented by Palamedes, of Greece, 1224 B. C. Chess is of late date, and originated GSO before the Christian Era. The first circus was built by Tarquin, 005 B. C., and theatrical representations took place as long as of2 B. (J. The first tragedy represented was written by Thespis, 556 B. C. So it seems the ancients were not as destitute of amusements as one would suppose.
posthat
As for musical instruments, they sessed the psaltry, harp, lute, and most ancient instrument, the cymbal, which is spoken of as long ago as 1508 B. C. The flute was the invention of Hyaginus, 7500 B. C. organs were invented by Archimedes, 220 B. C. and Nero played upon the melodious bagpipe 51 A. D.
In household furniture, glass was used by the Egyptians and Greeks 1400 B. B. carpets were in use 800 B. C. clocks which measured time by the falling of water were invented 157 B. C. sun-dials, which had been in use previous to the invention of the water-clocks, date from 550 B. C.
Bricks were made 2247 B. C. the lathe was invented by Tains, 1240 B. C. The compass was used by the Chinese 1115 B. C. Bellows are the invention of the Anarcharis, 569 years C.
But when we think that bread made from wheat was known to the Chinese 3S60 years ago, we must confess that it is rather stale we can imagine the young "heathen Chinee" of that date crying lustily for bread and honey. These Chinese are a wonderful people and no mistake, for even as fur back as 1100 B. C., Mr. Pa-out he wrote a dictionary containing forty thousand characters representing words.
When we read that the arts and sciences of astronomy, 2,244 B. C. sculpture and painting, 2,1000 B. C. geometry, 2,005B. C. husbandry, 1,088 B. C., poetry, philosophy, mathematics, mechanics, hydrostatics, geography, mensuration, geology, metallurgy, chemistry (called alchemy, we almost exclaim with Solomon,) "there is no new thing under the sun."
Truthfulness at Homo.
Of all happy households, that is the happiest where falsehood is never thought of. All peace is broken up when once it appears there is a liar in the house. All comfort has gone when suspicion has once entered—when their must be reserve iu talk and reservation in belief. Anxious parents, who are aware of the pains of suspicion, will place general confidence in their children, and receive what they say freely, unless there is strong reason to distrust the truth of any one. If such an occasion should unhappily arise, they must keep the suspicion from spreading as long as possible, and avoid disgraceing their poor child while there is a chance of its cure by their confidential assistance, lie should have their pity and assiduous help, as if he were suffering under some bodily disorder. If he can be cured he will become duly grateful for the treatment. If the endeavor foils, means must of course betaken to prevent his example from doing harm and then, as I said, the family peace is broken up, because the family confidence is gone. I fear that, from some cause or another, there are but few large families where every member is altogether truthful. But where all are so organized and so trained as to be wholly reliable in act and word, they are a light to all eyes and a joy to all hearts. They are public benefits, for they are a point of general reliance, and they are privately blessed within and without. Without, their life is made easy by universal trust and within their home and their hearts they have the security of rectitude and the gladness of innocence. —Harriet Martincau.
The lied of the Ocean.
It has been definitely ascertained that the greatest depth of the ocean does not reach 3,000 fathoms in any part where telegraphic lines have been laid. The bed of the North Atlantic consists of two valleys, the eastern extending from 10 to 30 degrees, the western from 30 to 50 degrees, west longitude. The extreme depth of the eastern valley is under 13,000 feet, which is less than the altitude of Monta Rosa. This valley has been traced southward to the equator. It is separated from the western valley by a ridge in 30 degrees west longitude, in which the average depth is only 1,600 fathoms. This ridge terminates to the north in Iceland, and southward to the Azores, so that it is volcanic in its character at both extremities. Jts extreme breadth appears to be under 500 miles, and the Atlantic deepens from it 011 both sides. Explorations carried 011 in the Mediterranean, the Red Seit, and the Indiau Ocean, showed similar uniformity iu the level of the seabottom and the general conclusions arrived at by Capt. Osborn were, that in the deep sea there is an absence of bare rock, and that there are no rough ridges, canons, or abrupt chasms. Moreover, that the bed of the deep sea is not affected by currents or streams, even by those of such magnitude as the Gulf Stream but it rather resembles the prairies or pampas of the American continent, and is everywhere covered with a sort of ooze or mud, the debris of the lower forms of organic life.
A Good Snake Story.
A novel affair recenty took place in Marion county, Ohio, beiugno less than a snake bunt on a large scale. The reptiles had become so numerous and so fearless of people, that small children were afraid
logo to school several having" been bitten oil their boots and it had been a common thing lor fifty or a hundred snakes to chase men, women and children across the prairie. A party was, therefore, organized .tor their destruction, and the snakes were surrounded and driven into a twentyacre patch of prairie, and the outer edges of the tall grass set fire to. The grass burned well, the flames rolling up ten feet high and as tiie line advanced the snakes retreated into the centre sometimes making desperate efforts to spring through the flames but the blaze being too heavy, they were killed in the attempt. One blue-racer was nine feet four inches long, and seven inches in circumference. This is the first snake story of the season, and it is a good one.

THE Superiority of these Extracts consists la their PERFECT PURITY and Great Strength. They are warranted free from the poisonous oils and acids which enter into the composition of many of the fictitious fruit flavors now In the market. They are not only TRUE TO THEIR NAMES, but are PREPARED FROM FRUITS OF THE BEST QUALITY, and are so highly concentrated that a comparatively small quantity only need be used.
