CITY

Council meeting this evening.

THE picnic season is at band, in all its

TRAIN, at the Opera House to-night. Don't fail to go.

STRAW

hats and linen dusters have

made their annual appearance.

"BEAUTIFUL beyond compare"—the mornings we have enjoyed recently.

EMMETT GUARDS, of Indianapolis, picnic at Early's Grove on the 24th inst.

THE Episcopal Convention for this Diocese, convenes at Indianapolis on the 7th of June.

PIC-NIC at Early's Grove to-morrow, given under the auspices of the Hibernian Benevolent Society.

THE members of the Episcopal Church are'arranging for a grand picnic, to take place some time next month.

PARALYZED.—The telegraph informs us that Henri Drayton, of the famous English Opera Combination, has been stricken with paralysis. He will be remembered by all our citizens who attended the opera ofll Trovatore recently.

THE movement recently set on foot by Professors Ivilbourne & Paige, for the establishment of a State Conservatory of Music in this city is succeeding beyond their mo&t sanguine expectations, and scholarships are being sold very rapidly. Call on the Professors at Paige & Co.'s Music Store.

"BEN ZINE" will pardon us for not publishing his communication, for the following reasons: First, when we received it, his name was unknown to us and second, when he made himself known, it was too late. Of the kind, his communication is a good one, and we only reject it for the reasons given above.

"DEEP IN MY HEART," by P. Centenier, is the latest piece of music received at W. H. Page & Co.'s, and a most beautiful and touching piece it is. Every young man and young lady whose lover has "gone back on them," and then returned to their "tirst love," should call at W. H. Page & Co.'s ami obtain a copy at once.

THE burglar written up in the Journal this morning, as having "gone through" P. Shannon's residence, proves to have been Dan. Crowe, Chief of Police, who found the back doors of Mr. Shannon's residence open, and went in to search for burglars. The doors were left open by some of the family, or servants about the house.

MANY complaints reach us of the depredations of a number of cows that almost nightly break into the beautiful yards along south Fifth street and destroy the shrubbery therein. The owners thereof will consult their interests in the way of being supplied with the luxuries of cream for their Jea and coffee by keeping their cows up, before some of them die a violent death, as the good people of that street assert that they will not endure such cow vandalism.

REPREHENSIBLE CONDUCT.—Last evening about dusk, as a lady was passing along one of our most public streets, she was rudely taken hold of by some scoundrel, but by vigorous muscular exertions she slipped from his grasp, but was so frightenedlhat when she reached a place of safety, she was almost in a fainting condition. Is it possible that we have such audacious villains and scoundrels right in our midst, that a lady eannot pass along our leading thoroughfares without being exposed to such insults? If there are any such, and they are found out, let the strong arm of the law, or of outraged justice, mete out to them such punishment as is due them.

TERRE HAUTE WATER WORKS.

Is the Enterprise to Result In a Failure 2 This question is now agitating the minds of many, and we fear will be answered in the affirmative. In fact, such an answer is now inevitable unless the city will come forward and agree to patronize them for all the public buildings, in addition to the pledges made by many of our far-seeing and most public-spirited citizens. The company do not think that the patronage guaranteed already will warrant their proceeding, and unless someting is done very soon the question as to whether we shall or shall not have water works in Terre Haute, will he decided against the interests of every property holder thereof. The gentlemen who arft members of the Terre Haute Water Works Company are bound down very closely by the charter granted them by the city, and under the circumstances it is but right and proper that they have guarantees of patronage before they proceed with the enterprise. It seems to us that it would be as good an investment as could be made by the city to supply the public schools and all public buildings and property with water from the water works when they shall be established, and as an encouragement to the company, guarantee them the city patronage to a certain amount. We would suggest that it would be a good idea for the City Council to take the matter in hand and confer with the company with regard to it. While we are not in favor of the city assuming the responsibility of paying for the construction of water works, it seems to us that it would be the will of a majority of the people of the city, to show that the city guarantees its patronage, when they shall be erected by a joint stock company as is proposed. We think it but justice to the gentlemen who have the enterprise in their keeping, when taking into consideration the charter granted them, that the city agree to patronize the company, and state the amount of proposed patronage, annually, for a stated number of years, and then the gentlemen of the company can ure up" and see if they can afford to proceed with the work. The advantages to accrue to the city from the establishment of a good system of water works is almost incalculable so much so, that we feel confident that were they now established and were the citizens enjoying the advantages of the improvement, no reasonable moneyed consideration would be any inducement to have them dispense with the blessing.

The citizens have responded quite liberally to the movement, without seeing any of the practical workings, or experiencing the advantages thereof. Mr. Woodruff, President of the Indianapolis Company, has called on many of the citizens, who have responded very liberally but the amount subscribed, so far, will not warrant the company sufficient promise of support to justify them in proceeding with the enterprise, and we fear that if there is not something done as suggested above, the movement to establish water works in Terre Haute will be a failure, and will not be a success for many years. In behalf of what we consider the best interests of the city, we shall regret exceedingly to have to make an announcement to that effect at any time, and hope we shall not.

GEORGE FRANCIS TRAIN'S LECTURE.—

Not the least and less enjoyable, and mirth-provoking entertainment of the season, will be given at the grand Opera House this evening, by the great inimitable, "incoherent" traveler, George Francis Train, who will switch off at this burg sometime during the day. His subject will be varied, while his delivery will be what is characterized by Beeclier and Gough as "incoherent." Go and see him, and witness his representation of a "coherent" lecture as delivered by these two gentlemen, if you would enjoy a good laugh. While Train has been characterized by many as a lunatic, we insist that were there more such lunatics there would not be so much of fraud perpetrated upon mankind, for we must confess that he has the peculiar genius of detecting men in their efforts to defraud the "dear people" for whom he ever cherishes deep sympathies, and whom upon every occasion practicable, he warns of their danger and has no hesitancy in denouncing their oppressors and showing up corporations, cliques and monopolies of whatsoever nature. He is styled by many as an egotist, but there is much of grandeur in his egotism and method in his madness. His audacity is of a high order. For energy and enthusiasm he has no equal. His wonderful brain is equal in power to a "fourteen cup Grove battery," and when brought to bear upon any object is very sure to analyze it and appropriate whatever there may be in it worthy of appropriating and reject all that there is in it which is of no use. There is no disputing the fact that George Francis is is the towering genius of this, the nineteenth century.

Let him have a grand ovation at the great and beautiful Opera House this evening. Secure reserved seats at B. G. Cox's book store.

AN elegant piano was shown* us this morning at the establishment of W. H. Page & Co. It has been received by them from the mammoth and celebrated manufactory of Chickering & Son, Boston, Mass., and is presented by Mr. Geo. O. Glovis, of New York City, to his daughter, who is stopping with her grand-father,

We heard that master musician, Prof. Kilbourne, of Ohio, sound this handsome instrdment this morning, and we must confess that we never before heard such pure and soulinspiring sounds as proceeded therefrom. As the skillful Prof, swept his nimble hands over the keys every shade of sound from the loud notes down to the finest intonations greeted our ears, transporting us to asphere hitherto, and doubtless to be hereafter unknown to us, and which sweet sounds linger in our ears yet.

The Blood Pills

Are the most active and thorough Pills that have ever been intjoduced. They act so directly upon the Liver, exciting that organ to such an extent as that the system does not relapse into its former condition, which is too apt to be the case with simply a purgative pill. They are really a

Blood and Liver Pill,

And in conjunction with the

BLOOD PURIFIER,

Will cure all the aforementioned diseases, and themselves will relieve and cure Headache, Costiveness, Colic, Cholera Morbus, Indigestion, Pain in the Boivels,

Dizziness, etc., etc.

DR. BOBACK'S

STOMACH BITTERS

Should be used by convalescents to strengthen the prostration which always follows acute disease.

Try these medicines, and you will never j-e-gret it. Ask your neighbors who have used them, and they will say they are GOOD MEDICINES, and you should try them before going for a Physician.
