THE TEMPERANCE QUESTION.
Rer. James Hill on the "Making, Tending, and Use of Ardent Spirits." The beautiful and elegant audience room of Asbury Church was packed full of people of all classes and both sexes of our citizens last evening, who were deeply interested and highly entertained by a sermon from the pastor, Rev. James Hill, on the making, vending and use of ardent spirits, a short synopsis of which we take pleasure in presenting to our readers.
THE SERMON.
Mr. Hill read his text from Genesis IV, 9th and 10th. After introductory remarks on the history of Cain and Abel, the speaker proceeded to show that, taking the 35ible as the moral code, corroborated by observation, the making and vending of ardent spirits was destructive of man's best, tenderest, and dearest Interests. even of his life, and was therefore criminal in its character and murderous in its effect. Arguments and thrilling facts were used In proof, by the sneaker, with great power and wonderful effect, upon this point.
The objection that the mahiiigor traLic was not forbidden in the Bible, was answered i-'3' showing that ardent spirits was invented six hundred years after the Bible was written, and that it is not the practice of the Bible or any other code of laws to specify and forbid crimes that have no existence, and the world would have stood won-der-stricken and perplexed at a Bible statute. "Thou shalt not make or vend spirits.''
Many other crimes are not expressly forbidden in the Bible. Such as piracy, bigamy, suicide and the sale of obsene works, and yet nobody
crimes. The plea that the law licensed the business, was answered showing the wrong of the license law. That gambling houses and houses of ill-fame are licensed in some municipal cities^ but this does not mako them right. That it is merciless to license, that that ruins men and families, converting their "home, sweet homes" into an emblem of hell. The law should protect them instead of exposing them to such danger and ruin.
It was worse to sell to sober men and make them drunkards than to sell to them afterwards until they died. Go and ask the tearful, heart-broken widow and the half-famished and half-clad children, and they will tell you that the man that made the husband and father a drunkard did them the greater injury.
The speaker entered a strong protest, as an economist, as a parent, and as a philanthropist, against the evil, the expense, of making annually an average of 500,000 drunkards, sending 50,000 to drunkards' graves, and furnishing 500,000 paupers, multitudes of convicts for the prisons and victims for the gallows, was depicted in burning and eloquent words, which had a wonderfully good effect upon the auditors of the speaker, while each one present seemed to understand and correctly apply each word uttered. A vivid and thrilling discription of "a son of promise," upon whom the God of nature had lavished his blessings in richest profusion, but made a druukard, impnvprlsnea, muniiuod destroyed, a subject of mania petu, begging his bread from door to door, and from the swill of hotels and private residences, and finally dying in a gutter, was presented in forcible and eloquent terms.
Liquor was denounced as a demon, with his glariug eyes darting through the land, his relentless clutch on everything beautiful and good his hot breath poisoning the air, and as a demon that might well be compared to Homer's warrior at the seige of Troy, "Around him wide, immense destruction pours, And earth isdeluged with thesanguineshowers, The fiery coursers as the chariot rolls, Tread down whole ranks and crush out heroes' souls. Dash\l from their hoofs, as o'er the dead they fly. Black, bloody, drops the smoking chariot dye The spiky wheels tlirought heapsof carnage tore, And thick the groaning axles dropped with gore. High o'er the scene Achillas stood, All grim with dust, all-horrible in blood." "The sermon throughout was a mo3t eloquent, argumentative, and withal able one, and was listened to with the most wrapt attention meanwhile, by the large and highly intelligent audience. It was an effort well worthy the ability of the distinguished Reverend gentleman who delivered it, and accomplished miracles in the way of convincing those present of the eviis incident to the manufacture, trafic and use of ardent spirits. May the cause grow in grace until it shall prevail over drunkenness and consequent evils.
"A RACE FOR LIFE—YOUNO BLOOD vs. HORSE FI.ESII.—"A solitary horseman"—a young blood—was observed about 4 o'clock P. M. Saturday making desperate and frantic efforts to facilitate his course north on Sixth street toward Main, mounted upon a sorrel horse of questionable proportions, the speed of which animal he was endeavoring to outstrip, the horse being in a° trot and the young bloodin a gallop. To say that he (the blood, not the horse) was "the observed of all observers" would not sufficiently set forth the facts of the case, but we will leave our readers to infer from that, that he was not wholly unobserved in bis wild lligbt. Bets were offered that the young blood would arrive at his destination at least two lengths ahead of his steed, but no takers were visible. The horse, as it headed West on Main street, exhibited unmistakable evidences of losing the race and commenced to "lag" while the young blood continued his wild flight towards the "roaring Wabash," aud disappeared, since which time neither rider or his gallant steed have been heard from, and fears are entertained that the places that once know them will know them no more, forever.
PERSONAL MENTION. Mr. Cyrus Oakes, of Decatur, Ills., and who has recently canvassed our city with so great success, for the history of the FrancoPrussian War, "Or the year of battles," written by L. P. Brochett, M. D., left this city for LaFayette to-day, to canvass for the same work in that city. We take pleasure in commending Mr. Oakes as a genial and courteous gentleman, and a young man of stability, and well worthy the consideration of a patronizing public.

REMEDY.—There was
very much drunkenness and rowdyism on the streets yesterday and last evening, if reports aud complaints are true. Is there no remedy for this wholesale dessecratiou of the Sabbath in our city We insist that if there is not, that there should be—and at once. We shall take pains on the next Sabbath, to note the names of the perpetrators of such out* rages against the ordinances of the city and against all decency, and shall publish them without fear or favor, whoever they are. There is a certain class of nice young men in every community who indulge in an occasional spree, and when arrested pay their tines ami consider it a little pastime and a joke, but who would be very much moriilied indeed to see their names published in connection with such disgraceful conduct, and as a remedy for this growing and urievous evil, we propose to publish their names irrespective of their previous good behavior.
