WATER WORKS.
THE NEW DISPENSATION.
The "Horny Handed" Brings a "Dead Boat" ami One "Sucker" to Uriof.
DEAD BEAT.
One Patrick Luby, not having the fear of the new dispensation at heart, or the cool, determined and sturdy form of our new Mayor before his vision, or for some reason, indulged in a very common drunk, for which he vvas duly arraigned before His Honor on a charge of drunkenness, who fined and costed him in the usual amount in such cases, in default of the payment of which Pat was •'sent up" and now languishetlx in "durance vile."
THE "SUCKER."
Last evening, about nine o'clock, an individual put in an appearance at the Filbeck House, appearing to be somewhat under the influence of benzine, and signified his intention of lodging therein and made an attempt to register his name, but said he could not because of his extreme nervousness, and asked "Nick." to register his name for him giving the name of William Harrison and his "hailing place" as Illinois (the "old Sucker State".) He was then told that having no baggage, he must pay his bill in advance, which he refused to do, saying that he never did such a thing, and left. About one o'clock this morning "Nick" was awakened from his slumbers (which were very sweet and blissful—under the new dispensation) by one of his lodgers calling out to him that there was some one in his bed, and refused to give it up. Nick, went into the room, and there discovered the man who "never paid his bills in advance,"—or afterwards—who stubbornly refusing to vacate the premises, and "showed fight," and "Nick" called lustily for a policeman, which call was responded to by officers O'Donnell and McCabe, who proceeded to collar the gentleman who never pays his bills, who assumed a position a la Mace, and proposed to dispose of a portion of the old police force in short order but a gentle hint from one of the officers, that he would make free use of the "billy" which he held up to his admiring gaze, the "sucker" concluded that he had made a mistake in the choosing of his quarters, as he no doubt understood that Nick was keeper of the City Hotel, not knowing that the Council failed to confirm our nomination of him for that position. This morning the old "sucker" was ushered into the presence of Alec, the "horney handed" where he give the name of George Briggs, and was charged with the above offense, to which he plead "not guilty," but when the charges were proven, and fine and costs in the sum of $9 were assessed, he prayed His Honor to allow him to withdraw the plea and enter one of guilty, which was alowed him by consent of Attorney B. F. Havens, who retains his position until next Tuesday evening. Upon pleading guilty, he was fined and costed §5.50 and the last we heard of him he was being paraded about the streets by the new Marshal Schmidt, who was accompanied by his handsome new cane.

passing Langford's this morning, while uuder the infiuence of benzine went into the oyster business on a large scale, by falling against a box that was standing in front of the door of that establishment and knocing the luscious bivalves 'into "pi." Smith was intercepted in his wild flight from the scene of the accident by Officer Vandever, who is ever on the alert for such chaps, Ed. lodged Smith in the City Hotel, where he now languisheth, awaiting with fear and trembling, as well he may, to be ushered into the presence of "Alec, the horny handed." Langford says he knows Smith didn't get his benzine at his establishment, or he would not have been able to fall against the box, as the benzine that he keeps is warranted to "floor" the victim before he gets that far—if he gets enough of it.
explanation of the bankruptcy of Mr. Barnard, the husband of Mrs. Rich-ing-Bernard, is published, in substance: Two years ago, Castle, Campbell, and Mr. and Mrs. Seguin, the principal artists of Mrs. Richings' company, deserted her and joined the Parepa Rosa Opera Company. Nothing daunted, Miss Richings then organized anew company, with Drayton, Bowler, and other artists, and set out upon an operatic tour. The tour was a most disastrous financial failure—the season closing with a loss of over $30,000. Miss Richings has ever since been endeavoring to make good her losses, and has sacrificed her personal property, even to jewels, to pay her debts Her father mortgaged his estate to assist her, and in time she would undoubtedly have discharged all her liabilities, but the death of her father caused the foreclosure of the mortgage. During last winter Miss R. was, and is now, connected with an English Opera Company bearing her name on salary—sharing the profits, but no losses. The tour of this company, has been, it is said, one of unprecedented financial success, and her financial embarrassment is caused by the conduct of certain members of her troupe, who deserted her in her hour of need, and who have ever since been most exacting in their demands.

RUNAWAYS.—Two
runaways were en
joyed to-day. One horse attached to a milk wagon ran around town a little while, and finally ran into the cellar of Shewmaker's warehouse, through the door, and dragged the door in after him. The other was attached to Strong's delivery wagon, which, after making atour of the city, finally "gave out," and was captured at the corner of Seventh and Main streets. No damage worthy of note was done in either case.
