ANOTHER ATTACK EXPECTED.—"Our reporter," who suflercel such a severe attack of the delirium tremens night before last, anticipates an attack of another nature when he meets any of the new city officers.

ARTISTIC.—We

House 'Jewelry Store this morning and found quite a crowd collected, having a piece of engraving on

a

a

large 'tin star."

We examined it carefully and must pronounce it

beautiful piece of workman

ship. The star was made by R. L. Ball, and bears the following inscription: ''General Sam. Magill, presented by his friends."

A CHURCH MEMBER (?)—A

member of

the City Council of Evansville objects to the Courier's reporter publishing verbatim reports of his ranting ^remarks in the Council when he indulges in profane language, on the ground that he is a member of the church and is fearful that it will effect his good standing therein. "Let up on him," Charley, or feis pjwtor will excommunicate him.

Oakey, Mrs. Emma Coats, Mrs. Wm. H. Valentine, Miss Emma Lange, Mrs. Thomas Dowling.

The following was adopted Resolved, That the citizens of Terre Haute be cordially invited to attend, and that it is earnestly requested that all glaces of business bo closed from 2 until 6 o'clock-P. M.

The meeting then adjourned to Thursday evening next, to hear reports of committees.

A MAN HUNTS A PLACE TO SLEEP AND GETS SHOT.—About 2 o'clock this morning an individual who gives his name as Christopher Prescott, and his "hailing place" as Albany, New York, was lurking about the premises of Capt. Jabez Smith, who resides on South Fourth street. He first went to one of the windows and tried to effect an entrance which awakened Mr. Smitn, who got up out of bed, and taking a small double-barrelled shot-gun, went around in front of his house and watched Christopher who started off around in the rear of the building, Jabez following him, when Christopher stopped, evineutly taking a survey of the surroundings when Jabez gave him a dose of bird shot in order to "bring him to" which took effect in the fleshy part of his hand, as Jabez didn't intend to kill him. Christopher ran into an out house and cried out for the "sliootist" to spare him another charge, and Jabez trotted him off to the Station House.

This morning His ex-Excellency interviewed him,Nbut Chris, told such a pitiful story, aud holding up his injured hand he proclaimed his innocence of any designs of burglary, and was allowed to go on his way. It is thought that ho was under the influence of benzine last night.

POTATO bugs are reported to be sitting on the fenco in Sullivan county, waiting for the vines. They may have to sit a long time.—T. H. Gazelle.

Mister, them are not bugs—they are bull frogs, weighing from 1 oz. to 2 lbs., and are waiting for the viandcru !—not"vines." Call them whappers bugs!!!! Just come t}own and hear them sing—local, local, Gazette, Gazette, Ku Ivlux, Ku Klux, go 'round, go 'round, Gazette, Gazette, Knee deep, knee deep, Ku Klux, Ku Klux, be 'ware, bo'ware 1 Call them bugs? Haw! haw ha ha! ha he-e-ee Paddy Miles' boy has roped you—he don't know bugs when he seen 'em, besides, they sit standing. Call thein bugs? Shust cum an' see 'em,—Sitllivan Union.

The editor of the Union must have been enjoying a serenade from the creatures he alludes to, when he wrote the above comment.

WATER WORKS.—Let our citizens but manifiest the spirit that we are assured all feel in regard to Water Works," by subscribing their names to the pledges being circulated by President Woodruff and other gentlemen, and the company will proceed with the works at once, aud in a short time our city will be blessed with great facilities for arresting the progress of fires, and thus will the high rates pf insurance be materially lessened, to say nothing of the thousand and one other advantages of such an institution in our city. We hope, and without fearof disappointment, that the enterprise will meet with that encouragement that will ensure its success.

MESSRS. MADISON & TURNER, Druggists at Terro Haute, have purchased an elegant Frost King Soda Fount, which is without doubt, the neatest and best in the State. By all means call and see it.— Hoosier /state.

If the editor of the Hoosier State had called there and tested its merits instead of making a mistake and testing the merits of the beverage kept by Langford, across the street, he would have been clear headed enough to have written Messrs. Buntin & Madisou, as there is no such firm in our city, as Madison & Turner. When you come to the city again don't get on the south side of the street, Cheadle, that beverage is too much for your understanding.

HEAVY DEFALCATION.

Intense ex

citement prevailed in business circles yesterday afternoon, growing out of the startling discovery that the cashier to the "blind fiddler" had proved a defaulter to the tune of seven cents and a half, and made good his escape. Though the "Crowe"is after him at this writing, we are of the opinion that the fugitive will not be captured until Dan's time shall have expired, and before "Gen'l" Magill, the new Chief of Police, shall be sworn in, and by which time the defaulter will be across the Wabash and beyond the "State line."

THE great inimitable George Francis Train will deliver one of his famous "incoherent" lectures at the Opera House on the evening of the IGth inst. Don't fail to go and see and hear this great prodigy. Secure you a reserve seat.at B. G. Cox's book store at once.

TEMPERANCE ADDRESS.—Col. Richard W. Thompson will deliver a temperance address at the Centenary Church next Sunday evening. Of course, the mere announcement of his name is ail that will be necessary to fill that beautiful and elegant structure upon that occasion.

INFANTILE MINSTRELS.—A couple of infantile minstrel clubs have been organized in this city. Last evening one of the clubs paraded our principal back streets, preceded by an infantile band of music, the instruments consisting of a ten cent horn, three baby whistles, one tin pan, a couple of twenty cent ifc-ums, and an old-fashioned country dinner horn. After parading the streets for some time the interesting troupe disappeared through the back door of a building at the corner of Third and Cherry where our reporter, having no "dead head" ticket aud no mouey, lost sight ot them.

KEV. WM. GRAHAM, of X. W. Tnd. Conference, says "BARK'S PKI'T'-.-RAI. B.MXN? acts like a charm."

Frost Kiag.—Tt costs you only live cents a glass for pure ice cold soil a at lue celebrated Frost Iving Fount at Luntin & Madison's. All the lovers of purr soda are invited to call and judge for themselves. Remember the price is only five cents a glass. -ml2dJ

I»id Xot Know Kim.—A gentleman purchased a suit of clothes of L. Goodman, No. 0 Main street, day before yesterday, and putting the suit on he started home, and when he got there his better half thought he looked so nice that she gave him the first kiss he had received in ten years. Husbands try a suit. mlldtf

To the Public.—As the Directors of the Terre Haute Water Works Company have determined to make an effort to construct the works authorized by the Council, and as thus far the stock subscriptions have not been as encouraging as was anticipated, it has been resolved that proper persons be appointed to wait upon our citizens and ascertain what amount of patronage can be secured for the company from private consumers. In accordance with this resolve our citizens will be waited upon, and this company hopes for such encouragement as will guarantee them in going immediately on with the enterprise.
