COME and get warm opposite the Postoffice. THERE are three vacant rooms in the now Sixth Ward school house.

GUSHING Greencastle damsels read their love letters on the streets.

NOTHING of general interest is being done in the Common Pleas Court to-day. "LAST APPEARANCE" of the old, and first appearance of the new Council tomorrow evening.

SEE report in our telegraphic columns of the meeting of the Grand Army of the Republic in Boston, yesterday.

CHOIR meeting at the Baptist Church this evening, to which all the choirs of the city are respectfully invited.

IT is expected that the old city officials will retire and the new ones take their places without bloodshed. We hope so.

ENTERPRISING.—Greencastle business men advertise their business on tombstones. That is what we would call a "dead advertisement."

LET there be arousing meeting at the Court House this evening, to take proper measures for the decoration of the soldiers' graves on the 30th instant.

COME and get warm opposite the Postoffice. SALESMAN WANTED.—As will be seen by reference to advertisement in "Wanted column," T. H. Riddle wants a first-class salesman in the notion department of his establishment on Main street.

CHANGE OF TIME.—The new timetable on the Vandalia Short Line, will go into effect on Monday next. The change in passenger time will bo but very slight, but freight traiu time will be very materially changed.

LAST SENSATION.—The last sensation in this city, is an insurance war, in which a late Professor in Union College, is one of the principal participants. Quills are the weapons used, while all parties are "using up" all the personalities they can command.

AN ITEM.—Here is an item for those who oppose coffee drinking and those who favor drinking Scotch whisky, etc.: "Experiments recently carried on in India have proved that coffee pulp will yield, upon distillation, nino per cent, of its own weight in spirit, equal iu strength to Scotch whisky."

THERE will be a meeting of the choirs of all the churches of the city, willing to assist in the State Sunday School Convention, to be held in this city on the 13th of June, to procure and practice music for the approaching Convention, at the Baptist Church this evening. All are most respectfully invited to attend.

COME and get warm opposite the Postafficc.

THE BELL RINGERS.—Day after tomorrow evening the famous Peak Family of Bell Ringers will make their lirst appearance at the Opera House in this city upon which occasion we triftt there will be a large attendance, as the entertainment will be first-class in every respect. Secure your reserve seats at B. G. Cox's book store, Main street.

GEORGE FRANCIS TRAIN will certainly make his second appearance in this city, at the Opera House, on the evening of the

16th

inst., upon which occasion he

will "astonish the natives" by his "incoherency." Go and see and hear the great proposed successor of President Grant. Reserved seats can be secured at B. G. .Cox's book store. Not for the White House, but the Train variety show.

THE GRAND RUPUBLICAN CAUCUS.

What Our Reporter Heard About it Yesterday After Having Visited Lank-l'ord-'s.

The common street, hotel, workshop and bar-room talk, of our city yesterday, was "what did the Republican caucus do last night." This seemed to all to be a connundrum. Burnett, Edwards, Magill, Gen. Cruft, Ed. Stephens, Nick Filbeck, "Horny Handed Alec," the "chief writer of the

Express,''1

all the

member of the Council and many other "bright and shining lights" of the Republican party were interviewed and "button-holed" by an army of irrepressible oflice-seekers to know what was done. But all these gentlemen were as silent as the grave and theirlips were sealed, each one areriug that he didn't know anything about it. GAZETTE newsboys were importuned on the streets in the afternoon, but as we were unablo in the morning to learn anything definite because of having been "read out of the ring," we were unable to give any information upon the subject. Curses against the GAZETTE, not loud, but deep, were heard in every quarter, one disappointed "eussist" coming around and saying that if we didn't have something about it to-day, he would not steal the GAZETTE from his neighbor's back yard and read it any more. This terrible threat impelled us to something desperate, and we sent out our reporter, who after having visited Lankford's, "interviewed" several of the big guns of the caucus, and succeeded in gaining the following information of the doings of that distinguished body:

After some considerable discussion and deliberation, in consequence of the great military services "in the late unpleasantness," and his well known bravery, "Gen. Sam Magill was made Chief of Police, in preference to Ed. Stephens, who made such a glorious record during the last fall and the recent political campaigns. The caucus could not "go back" on the gallant soldier who so valliantly went to the front in the hour of the country's greatest need. For and because of his self-denial in accepting the office of Postmaster of this great city, and his invaluable services to the party in the late campaign, and by reason of his peculiar fitness for the position, L. A. Burnett was made Deputy Marshal. W. E. Hendrich, Esq., in consideration of his faithfulness to party service was unanimously declared to be the choice of the caucus for the office of Street Commissioner. John G. Grain was nominated for the position of Market Master without a dissenting voice. ex-Auditor Paddock, in consideration of his indignantly stopping his subscription to the GAZETTE, was nominated for City Engineer. W. K. Edwards, Esq., for his valuable services as Chairman of the Republican primary ward meeting in the First Ward, was nominated for the office of City Attorney. Ed. Stephens, who had been defeated as Chief of Police by the gallant "Gen." Magill, was nominated for Chief of Fire Department, by acclamation. Nick Filbeck, in consideration of his successful electioneering, was nominated for Station House keeper, amidst loud applauses, clapping of hands, and kicking up of heels.

When, after a short deliberation upon the Democratic statement of finances, reported to be so favorable to the establishment of several new offices for those of the party who rendered valuable services and needed rewarding, the following new offices were created, and the following gentlemen were appointed to fill them

An officer whese duty it shall be to wind up the town clock was nominated in the person of George Rugan. The chief writer of the

Expi'ess

Our reporter further learned that the inauguration of the above officers would take place at the Council Chamber in the city of Terre Haute, Friday evening of this week, upon which occasion the doors will be thrown open to the public no doubt, and things "rich, rare and racy" will be seen thereat. [Our reporter had a severe attack of the

WATER WORKS—WHAT ANSWER?— What answer will our citizens give to the question as to whether we shall have water works? They are being called upon to subscribe their names to a paper pledging themselves to patronize the water works when builded, to a certain amount. Many have already been called upon and but very few indeetf have failed to respond to the amount solicited, while many have doubled that amount. The question as to whether we shall or shall not have water works is now in the hands of the people. Only let our citizens show a patronizing spirit, and in a short time, one of the greatest blessings that God vouchsafes to man water—pure, sparkling soft water—will be iu the reach of every person in this, our own beautiful and prosperous city. Who are there who own property in our midst, who have not liberality enough to pledge themselves to give ten, twenty or thirty or even fifty dollars per annum for three, five or ten years for that matter, to have such a needed and convenient commodity not only, but such a blessing, within the reach of all. Let those who have already given ten dollars, give ten more. Any persons who have not pledged themselves yet, and those who have, and feel that they can afford to give more, call at the Prairie City or McKeen & Minehall's Bank, where they can find a subscription paper and give more. Let us have water works.]

DECORATION DAY. —A meeting is called at the Court House this evening for the purpose of making arrangements for the appropriate decoration of the graves of our gallant soldier boys who are now quietly sleeping in their honored and silent graves iu an around the city, and it is hoped that there will be a large attendance in older that proper respect be shown our dead brothers who so nobly yielded up their lives that the nation might live, and that those whom they loved and cherished should dwell in peace and plenty in the beautiful valley of the Wabash.

It is but a fitting tribute to their memories, that their last resting places be decorated with the choice and beautiful flowers that bloom in the valley in which they once "lived and moved and had their being," by hands they once clasped in friendly and affectionate grasp. We hope that there will be a large attendance and a deep interest made manifest this evening, in order that on the 30th inst., the graves of our fallen dead may be appropriately decorated.

To the Public.—As the Directors of the Terre Haute Water Works Company have determined to make an effort to construct the works authorized by the Council, and as thus far the stock subscriptions have not been as encouraging as was anticipated, it has been resolved that proper persons be appointed to wait upon our citizens and ascertain what amount of patronage can be secured for the company from private consumers. In accordance with this resolve our citizens will be waited upon, and this company hopes for such encouragement as will guarantee them in going immediately on with the enterprise.

Keep the blood pure and the health of the system will follow.

PIN, TAPE, and other WORMS, lurking in the system of so many thousands, are effectually destroyed and removed. For full dtiections, read carefully the circular around each bottle, printed in four languages—English, German, French and
