City and Neighborhood.
LOOK out for highway robbers.
THE Bell Ringers, Saturday evening
COME and get warm opposite the Postoffice. THE lady who took everybody's ey« must have had quite a supply.
THE matrimonial business was fair to middling during the past week.
"SLOPPING OVER."—The Express is "slopping over" on the soda water question.
THE beauty and loveliness of the day are only equalled by the beauty and fashion promenading the streets.
GEORGE FRANCIS TRAIN, the greatest of American "original and incoherent" lecturers will talk at the Opera House on the evening of the 16th inst.
BOUND FOR EUROPE.—Fred. Fisher and his little son started for a three month's absence in Europe, last evening. They will visit in Germany.
CIIIGNONS are going out, and women who have hair will wear it drawn back from the forehead, and fastened in a simple knot at the back of the head.
THE Grand "Temple of Honor" will hold its next annual session at Evansville, commencing Tuesday, May 23J, at the Temple of Honor in that city.
COME and get warm opposite the Postoffice.
THERE was no business of importance transacted in the Common Pleas Court this morning and nothing of general interest is occurring there this afternoon.
DON'T forget the great George Francis Train's variety show at the Opera House on the evening of the 16th inst. It will be very interesting, diverting and entertainiug.
NOT COLD.—In another column will be found a very touching appeal to "come and get warm opposite the Postoffice." We don't feel at all CJM, or we would go.
THE latest style of bracelet is called the Bayless-Nilsson bracelet, because it is so ingeniously constructed that it can be arranged to fit on the wrist of Jayless or Nilsson. Riddle has them.
PROSPERING.—The "blind tiddler" evidently is prospering in his calling, as we observed him on the streets to-day accompanied by a green-goggled fellow who was playing the part of cashier.
THE Maninerchor of this city will celebrate its fifteenth anniversary by a grand concert, ball and banquet, this evening at Turner Hall. None but members and invited guests will be present.
"LORD LOVELL" was observed riding about the city last afternoon, behind a couple of diminutive mules that looked very much like they had just been resurrected from the Otter Creek coal mines.
COME and get warm opposite the Postaffice.
THE style this season for young men of society is to wear the hair very short, and parted in the center. It might be added that, among "young men of sawsiahtah," the ears this year are worn as long as ever.
THE woman who maketh good biscuits is by far a better companion for life than* she who playeth upon the piano, although the latter accomplishment is not objectionable if you can afford the luxury.
THE Republican caucus made a selection of officers within the gift of the Council, last evening, but it is to be kept a profound secret until Friday night, when a mighty revelation may reasonably be expected.
A RUMOB.—We have it on good authority that ex-Mayor Cookerly will establish a law and real estate office down town, but that for the present, his residence will remain where it is. May success ever attend him, whatever bis vocation.
TERRE HAUTE WATER WORKS.
That's the Ones-
"To Be or not to Be? tion." This question is an all important one to the inteiests of our city, and is now being practically answered. The "Water Works Company of Terre Haute is composed of our public spirited capitalists it is true but while they are gentlemen who are ever ready to do that which is* for the best interests of our city, they feel that they cannot, in justice to themselves, invest the sum of two hundred thousand dollars in the interest of the city, without having some assurance from the citizens thereof that their efforts will meet with that support which will ensure the Company against serious loss. livery citizen of Terre Haute will certainly readily concede the importance and 7iced of Water Works. The Company feel that before
10:5") A. M. they can proceed with the enterprise that the public ''pulse should be felt of," and President Woodruff of the Indianapolis
Water Works Company, having had much valuable experience as a water cure physician has undertaken the task, and iie is rapidly proving himself most skillful one. Mr. Woodruff started out yesterday with a subscription paper, soliciting the names of business men who will pledge themselves to patroni/.e the Water Works to a certain amount fur so many years, at so much per annum. Upon every hand he meets with very encouraging success, which demonstrates the fact that the people of our beautiful and prosperous city are alive to the importance of the enterprise and the very great advantages to accrue to the city by the introduction of the Holly Water Works. Let this spirit of patronage on the part of our citizens only be made manifest to the gentlemen composing the Terre Haute Water Works Company to the degree that they can have the assurance that they will not be the losers, and in the not far distant future water as pure and soft as can be obtained in any city in the laud will be at the command of every citizen of Terre Haute, and the dangers of devastating fires lessened to an incredible degree. We hope, therefore, that Mr. Woodruff will meet with the success that he deserves, in which event the Company will be satisfied of the support and patronage of the city, and the Water Works question will be settled in the favor of our city and every inhabitant thereof.
PERSONAL.—S. K. Gapen, formerly connected with the Express of this city, is here for a few days, visiting his relations and friends. He now resides in the City of Xew York.
We were glad to meet 011 our streets yesterday, Mr. Seymour Gookins, who twenty years ago, was one of the prominent citizens of this place, but since then has resided further west. Mr. Gooking's is astonished at the growth of the city, siuce he was a resident here, and speaks in glowing terms of its beauty and business. He is now on his way to New York City, where he expects to make his future home.
Rev. B. W. Smith will remove his family to Indianapolis at 4 P. M. to-day. Himself and family take away with them the kindest wishes and leave behind them the pleasant remembrances of many friends and acquaintances in this city, who, while they regret to loss them as neighbors, will ever rem em* ber with pleasure the days gone by. Mr. Smith was so occupied with business, and annoyances incidental to moving, that himself and family found it impossible to call on many friends in the city, and caused Mr. S. to neglect for the present many little items of business that he will arrange when he returns after having located his family at the Capital.
Hon. John Ingle, Jr., President of the E. & C. Railroad, is in the city, stopping at the Terre Haute House as is also Mr. James O. Woodruff', of the Indianapolis Water Works Company.
Rev. Mr. Stimsnn, of the Baptist Church of this city, has been unanimously granted a leave of absence by his congregation until October, in order that he may visit Europe on account of his health.
VALUABLE AND SENSIBLE SUGGESTIONS BY ONE WHO KNOWS.—The following valuable suggestions from an experienced and successful business man show that there are economics in the advertising business not generally thought of or understood "Merchants are importuned almost every day by tramps to give them from fisre to twenty-live dollars for inserting cards in directories for this and that. Common sense ought to tell any man that if he has any money to spend in advertising, the proper way to do it is to advertise in his home papers and then order a hundred or a thousand extra copies and mail them to customers, By this means you not only encourage your home paper, but at the same time you get a direct benefit from advertising, and also benefit the town, for its papers go out among the very class of people you want to reach, telling its advantages as a placo of trade while twenty-five dollars may be thrown awav in a card in a directory, that is got up to advertise other places, and is thrown away and never seen." If our merchants would advertise in their home papers and send out extra numbers, they would get more direct benefit than by their present plan of mailing circulars. People do not care to take up a circular and read it when, if a spicily written advertisement appears in the columns of a newspaper, most every one who, leads the news that. Why, business men suggestions
one
columns will read therefore, cannot our learn wisdom from the of one who knows and has had personal experience in all kinds of advertisement, and knows whereof he speaks, as the gentleman who makes the above suggestions. 1
PLANT sunflowers if there is any place about your house where water is thrown out, and likely to become malarious. This plant has the power of absorbing malaria ana purifying the atmosphere. If you will do this you will not be exposed to the fever breeding malaria arising from puddles, made by throwing dish water and other slops into your backyards, and will thereby be rendered "as happy as a big sunflower."
THE BELL RINGERS.—One of the most enjoyable entertainments of the season is in store for our music loving citizens on Saturday eveniug, as the entertainments given by the Peak Family are of a very high and interesting order and character. Let there be a large attendance upon that occasion. Reserved seats for sale at B. G. Cox's book store to-day, and until the evening ot the entertainment.
HEV. WM. GRAHAM, ot'N. W. Incl. Conference, says "BAKU'S PKCTOUAL HLIXIU acts like a charm."
"Interviewing."—While interviewing is fashionable we would advise our gentlemen readers to go and interview L. Goodman, No. Main St., with a view of securing for themselves, at very low rates, a splendid suit «f clothes. Thus will they be enabled to "interview" their "dulcenOs" and have some means left to "setup housekeeping"—when they get ready. mOdtf
To the Public.—As the Directors oi the Terre Haute Water Works Compan have determined to make an effort to construct the works authorized by the Council, and as thus far the stock subscriptions have not been as encouraging as was anticipated, it has been resol\ed that proper persons be appointed to v. ait upon our citizens and ascertain wnat jd for
amount of patronage can he secure the company from private consumers. In accordance with this resolve our citizens will be waited upon, and this company hopes for such encouragement as will guarantee them in going immediately on with the enterprise.
By order of the Board, mOj: Joirx S. BEACH, Tres't.
