GRAND LARCENY.—For some time several articles have been missed from the National House, but the perpetrator of the petty thefts not discovered until Saturday, when a young man named George Vanderpool, an employee of the house, was arrested by Officer Vandever, charged with the larceny of six bottles of wine, five gallons of sherry, one shirt and three railroad checks, each of the value of $24. Yesterday was a day long to be remembered by such of our people as feel an interest in the temperance cause, and A". ?t. consequently interest in the well-being of the community at large. Pursuant to previous announcement in the dailies of the city, meetings were held yesterday afternoon and evening at Dowling Hall, under the auspices of the Temperance
Alliance, which was addressed by Prof. G. W. Hoss, of Bloomington, and our own distinguished fellow citizen, Col. Richard "NY. Thompson.
THE AFTERNOON MEETING,
however, from some cause, probably the weather, making it much more attractive outside, was not so largely attended as it should have been, or as we expected to see. At 1 o'clock S. II. Potter, Esq., called the meeting to order and introduced Prof. Hoss, who addressed (he meeting in a very forcible and argumeniive speech of over an hour in length, in the course of which he proved by the writings of the best chemists in the world that alcohol is entirely devoid of any nutritive
p. qualities and cannot be otherwise than
injurious to the system when taken into the stomach either in large or small quantities. That while it did no good whatever to the system, whoever indulge in it are subject to have fastened upon them such a habit as would eventually drag them down from their position in society, however exalted, into the gutter, the lunatic asylums, penitentiaries, jails and finally to the grave.
The speaker, having shown the result of the use of alcoholic stimulants, then pointed outsomeof the temptations that young men have to indulge in the ruinout beverage, one of which was that young men were not. unfrequently tempted first by gentle and beautiful, though thoughtless women, who upon the eve of marriage, when at the festal board, have tendered the man whom she was soon to "take for better or for worse," the wine ctq), which he quaffi!, not that he cares for the wine, but that it is offered by her in whom he has more confidence than all else in the world. He drinks and in a few short weeks they are married, and with the congratulations of their friends they start out upon the great voyage of life, when in a short time, to her horror, she discovers that her husband has become addicted to frequenting club rooms and drinking saloons, and ere long he is carried home by his drunken associates in a state of beastly intoxication, and henceforth her life i3 rendered almost unendurable and wretched and the more so because of his having been tempted first by the one who above all others should have influenced him to "touch not, taste not, handle not." Finally, after dragging his once loved wife down to misery, want and beggary, he dies and fills a drunkard's grave, and she is left a drunkard's widow to repent during a lifetime, that she was the first cause that led to the ruin and death of her husband.
The speaker, after having pointed out the evils of intemperance and many of the temptations thereof, proceeded to point out the remedy, which was that the children of the rising generation be "brought iq) in the way they should go, etc.," and they would not depart hence.
He claimed that parents and teachers had the matter of intemperance in their own hands, and that it was their duty to train them up to never touch or taste the "wine when it sparkles in the cup"— that public opinion must be brought to bear upon evil, that young ladies must organize themselves into societies and resolve to redeem young men from vice by persuasion, and when that failed, refuse them their society that temperance alliances be organized in every community, that all who feel any interest in the welfare of the cummunity in which they reside, should lend their influence not only, but do all in their power to bring about the much desired suppression of that greatest curse of every community which causes the death of more men and even women, and the destitution of more souls, than all other causes combined.
The Prof, made a strong appeal in behalf of the cause of temperance, and closed his remarks, which were listened to with the closest attention throughout.
The Davis family were then called upon and sung, "Tommy don't go," in most excellent style, after which the afternoon meeting dispersed.
THE EVENING MEETING.
At an early hour in the evening, Dowling Hall was filled to its utmost capacity, from the stage to the gallery. There being no services in the churches on account of the temperance meeting, the attendance was very large, indeed.
The meeting was called to order, and after the rendering of a beautiful selection by the "Davis Family," Col. R. XV. Thompson was introduced and delivered the lecture of the evening.
The eloquent speaker proceeded to show in his usual, logical and convinc ing way the evils of intemperance in connection with the politics of the country, and his experience with temperate and intemperate men in political and soctal life taking the position that the late terrible civil strife which deluged our beautiful land with fraternal blood, was superinduced by intemperance, and that much of the mismanagement of our National and State a flairs was the result of the intemperance of men in high places.
The speaker was not in favor of licensing the selling of intoxicating liquors any more than he was any other vice, and he thought there should be a law prohibiting its manufacture. He thought that woman suffrage would have a great influence over it.
The eloquent speaker spoke for over an hour* in his own peculiarly interesting, logical and instructive style, riveting the closest attention of his audience throughout, being frequently and enthusiastically applauded. In short, his effort was well worthy the great cause in the interest of which it was made, and fully did justice to the great reputation of the distingushed gentleman.
The meetings have awakened a deep interest in this great cause of all other
causes that is destined to benefit our race—the temperance cause—and we hope the interest will be maintained until every drunkard of this community not only, but every other, shall be redeemed from the thraldom of intemperance.
FAST DRIVING—DAMAGES.—A young man from the country was arrested by Marshal Whiteman, Officer Vandever and others on Saturday for fast driving and running against thecarriage of lion. "\Ym. McLean, damagiug it slightly and throwing therefrom a lady. The fellow was fined $10 for damage to the buggy, and $7 for violating the ordinance against fast driving.
THE FIRST OF THE SEASON.—Mr. Ilippetoe will please accept the thanks of the editorial and other departments of the GAZETTE for several boxes of the first and finest strawberries of the season. He has any quantity of the best the market affords, not only of strawberries but everything in that and the grocery line. Go and see.
