This paragraph in connection with the sojourn of a Dr. Cobb in company with a young lady at the locality we have named, was brought to the attention of acting Superintendent Phillips, wiio became satistied that they were the couple advertised as having eioped. Yesterday morning he resolved upon action in the matter, and it was time, for the virtuous disciple of physics and learning had become alarmed, and was about to leave the unsafe neighborhood. Detective Dan Morganstern was sent out. He ascertained that Dr. Cobb had disposed of his furniture to Mr. Hhoecrnft, and was intending at once to leave town. Immediately he proceeded to the Doctor's rooms.

There he did not find'the Doctor, but he did find a young lady who represented herself as Mi s. Dr. Cobb, and who stated that her husband had decided upon their immediate departure from the city. Morgansten then took his leave, and as he went down the stairs met the Doctor going up. lie said nothing, but proceeded to the police office, where he reported what he had learned, and then again started out in obedience to further instructions. Posting himself in an eligible position for observation, he presently saw the couple issue from the building, apparently attired for travel. After proceeding a little way they separated, the Doctor going towards the Erie street depot, while the lady directed her steps down Pearl street, with the intention, doubtless, of reaching the same point by a roundabout way. When the man was out of sight the detective overtook the girl and at once led her to the police office. Then repairing to the depot he found the Doctor impapatiently awating her arrival, and him also he'led to the police headquarters. Doctor Albion Cobb denied all knowledge of any such place as Wilton, Maine, and resting upon his dignity, refused to make any reply to any further interrogations. From the girl, however, the whole pitiful story was easily drawn. Her name is Mary JJ. Dow, and her father a carpenter, residing in Farmington,Maine. She admitted having the knowledge that Cobbs has a wife and four childron living at Well's Mills, but said that he had made her believe that he would obtain a separation and would marry her, and upon that pretense he had prevailed upon her to elope, and had subsequently el lee ted her seduction. The poor girl is of pietty and winning .appearance, small in size, and quite intellectual. The Doctor is more than six feet tall and correspondingly broad and heavy. He is about forty-ftve years of age.

Subsequently to the arrest of the parties, Mr. Phillips telegraphed to Mary's father, and in response received a request, to hold them until his arrival. A viler case of seduction than this appears to be was never recorded by the press of the country.

A Miraculous Escapc.

The Springfield (Mass.,) Republican tells this story: While a train on the Boston & Albany Railroad was running at a speed of 23 miles ai\ hour the other day, on a short curve between Richmond and State Line, the engineer noticed a man walking on the track some distance ahead ot the train. He blew the whistle and rang the bell, but did not seem to attract his attention. He then made every endeavor to stop tho train, but all to no avail. The cow-catcher struck the man and threw him in front of the engine against the boiler, and there he remained until the engineer stopped the locomotive, when the "stranger" jumped oil'

that the man was dead, and their surprise when they saw him making up laces at them can be imagined. It was a miraculous escape not once in a thousand times would a person escape death under similar circumstances.

THE SHAMEFUL MAINS: ELOPEMENT

An Academy Principal Elopes with a Voting Lady Pupil—Their Arrest in tlii-i City.

A few days ago a large, heavily built man, not of extraordinary prepossessing appearance, favored this city with his presence, and rented a couple of rooms on the second iloor of the building at tiie northwest corner of Main and Eagle streets. One of the rooms he furnished as an ollice, the other as a sleeping apartment. In this location he took up his quarters, and the occupants of the adjoining offices noticed that he lived in company with a young and handsome girl, apparently about seventeen years of age. The stranger represented himself as a physician, and presently a small sign appeared on the building wall at the street corner, bearing the inscription, "Doctor Cobb." Lately the .Main papers have had much to say about the elopement. of the principal of the Wilton Academy with one of his female pupils, and they have expressed great indignation ill regard to the outrageous character of the afiair. We read of a most shameful elopement. Dr. Albion Cobb, Principal of the Wilton (Maine) Academy, forty-live years of age, with a wife and four children, has absconded with a young lady, his pupil, handsome and well educated, but an invalid. This immense scoundrel of a Cobb, being a physician as well as a schoolmaster, was placed in special charge of the girl's health, so that he has been guilty of a double breach of professional confidence, and is one of those beings whose presence in the world sufficiently accounts for the rarity of Christian charity.

upon the pit of the stomach of a child, will cause the bowels to be emptied, and alloes kept in contact with a raw surface will produce same eflect as if the medicine had been taken into the stomach. So said the great Dr. Clutterback. Very many persons know the operation of croton oil when placed upon the tongue, to say the least, it is speedy. Purgatives in some sha. e, are indispensable in the practice of medicine. Many diseases are incurable without them and all of the simple disorders of the system are benefitted by their use. The great desideratum in their administration lias been to get one which has either laxative or purgative, as was needed—always mild but always ellicient—and the use of which did not make it necessary to continue its use. This has at last been done. EDWARD WILDEK'S FAMILY PILLS fulfill all the requirements of the case. They area laxative, yet sure purgative, yet mild. In small doses, they meet the first want in large doses, they fulfill the latter bui. in whatever quantity given, they create no necessity for they create no morbid state of the alimentary canal tube, but leave it clcansed and urge it to renewed health. They are, in brief, a blessing to the individual who suffers from constipation and needs a laxative, and are indispensable to him who is parched witn fever and requires a purgative. Use thorn, a! 1 on who value health.

Holmintliology.

A distinguished physiologist hasdeclared that it seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodies should be peopled with them. Hie huge whale is often driven tomadessbyan almost invisible member of the tribe oi venues. The history ol Helminthology abounds in illustrations ot the influence of worms in the production ot disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of men, their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states ot tiie animal economy, all toiul to render them an object of interest lrom the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the study of these ento/.a with tiie view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedi iy, safely and permanently expelling them lrom the human sytem. r.JWAKD WILUKU'S MOTIIKii'S Wo KM SYUU1' is a true vermicide, a geuuine worm destroyer, a bona jide vermifuge. Dr. Laenncc.

This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all liis skill in detecting the nature and form ol tiie malady before him, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all tliealfectionsof the air passages still he left but tew words concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better how to manage any one of these chest troubles he knows tiie value of the wild cherry lie is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of the many potent agents which enter into the combination of Edward Wilders Compound jytnu of WiM Cherry, and knows that with the use of this truly great medicine he is fully master of the situation. He has no fear ill the presence of croup, 110 misgivings at the advance of bronchitis he grapples wtth consumption, and subdues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Ilence every family should always have this in valuable medicine at liauU.^

Indigestion,

"Which makes sleep a pain, and turns its balm to wormwood," is, we all know, the most, common of all the disorders of the stomach. It is also the most obstinate. It has been the most written about. No disease presents such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency, which regulate natural events tliey bother the doctor, and can only be read by him who is skilled in the book of nature. It is self evident that the different forms of indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has been said that the perfection of medical skill is tiie talent of applying to each individual case its precise and as it were, its individual cure. This is the object which every conscientious physician pursues unceasingly, and never can rest satisfied until he has overtaken. .Edward Wilder's Stomach Bitters, their body being tiie purest of copper-distilled whisky, makes this object attainable alike to all. They area specific—the disease specifying the remedy, not the remedy tiie disease. They are a combination of substances which meet tiie speciality 01 the disorder by a corresponding speciality ol cure. They should be kept 111 every well-regu-lated family they are indispensable to health

Giiiuliaima lliver.

Tiie British army when it advanced on Talavara and fought the celebrated battle, which was followed by a retreat into the plains, lost more men by the malarial diseases contracted 011 the banks of the Gaudiana than by the bullets of tiie enemy. They died by thousands All Europe believed that tiie invading army was extirpated. Yet malarial diseases are 110 more common in Kurope than in our own country they exi'-t throughout the length and breadth of our land—every where at some time and in some shape are we made to feel the sickoning influence of miasm. The three gieat actors in this equation of disease are solar heat, moisture, and vegetable decomposition. The tiio, if separated, arc harmless together tliey are more potent for evil than any other known agents so long as they exi.^t, just so long will we have need of a medicine which will overcome their pernicious efleets, so long-will it be necessary to have a remedy capable of meeting and beating the insidious enemy. Of all known agents for this purpose, none is to compare with Eilward Winter's Chill Tonic, the master of every form aud variety and grade and degree of malarial diseaseandof miasmatic poison. Try it, all you who are sutiering from any form of ague and fever or chills and fever, as a cure is guaranteed in every case.

St. Louis Hospital, Paris.

This ancient instiitutio.i isone ot the largest, and to the medical student, the most interesting of the many public charities which adorn the gay capitol of the French. It receives within its walls annually thousands of sick poor. A considerable portion of the building is set apart lor patients suffering with diseases of the skin, and every patient, old or young, is taking potash in some shape, and Honduras sarsaparilla in some form. They were esteemed by the renowned physicians who had charge of the skin department as well-specific in almost every variety of cutaneous disease, whether of rheumatic orscrofulous or simple oiigin. Thej were given in tetter, ringworm, nettle-ash, roseasli,'pimples, scrofuia, ulcers, old sores, falling of tiie'hair, etc. In all they did good, in most they effected a cure. But it has remained for Edward

Wilder's SarsapariUa and Potash to perform the most remarkable cures awarded to any known ni6tliciii6 11 possesses virtues shared by 110 other combination of these substances. It is a therapeutic marvel. Against all the diseases at which it is aimed it is simply resistless it never fails. See to it that you suffer not one day longer with any of the ills which it cures.
