We make a local matter of this because of the great fame and popularity of the company with all mir citizens, thus making it a matter of local interest. We entertained high hopes that sometime not far distant, wo should again bo favored with another entertainment by the grand English Opera. Combination, but. that hope h: one of the past.
Pi: Kiir.sox, the show and JVIusiea1 critique of the Terre Haute GAZICTTI:, intended coining down to attend the variety show last night. He washed his feet very clean but could lind no one to lend him a pair ol' socks or a clean shirt, hence he had to stay at home, and forego the longed for pleasure. Come in warm weather, Dick, when it is fashionable to be clad in San Domingo costume, an umbrella and a chew of tobacco.—Evanavillc Courier.
Charley Ilall, the local of the Courier, came to this c-ity upon the occasion cf the appearance of the English Opera, and never having attended an opera, he mistook the Theater Comique for the Opera House, and put in an appearance there in the San Domingo costume described above, but having no "dead head" or money to pay his ail mission fee and being in that unpresentable costume he failed to get inside, and spent the evening in the rear of the institution trying to "deadhead" it into the "wine-room," to seek an introduction to one of the ballet girls, laboring under the delusion that she was a member of the Opera Combination and would "dead-head" him into the Opera.
When asked why he came to the city in such a co.-ume, lie blubbered out that he "didn't have hilt One shirt, and his washerwoman was wearing that." We have since learned that .'-he was wearing it in order to get the worth of an unpaid wash bill, in that way.
GEORGE FRANCIS TRAIN desires to return his sincere thanks to the citizens of Terre Haule for the liberal manner in which they have subscribed their names to orders fur tickets for his second appearance and has ordered a diagram of the Opera House to be placed on exhibition at B. G. Cox's book store Monday morning, where those who have invested can obtain reserve seats without extra charge.
Train has recently been lecturing at Memphis to crowded houses, where $1 a ticket was the charge. This we learn from a gentleman of this city, who was in that city at the time Train lectured there, and attending himself, he knows whereof lie speaks. Of course, the Opera House will be crowded 011 the occasion of Train's second appearance in this city.
AYKOM THE GIRLS LOVE.—It is said by "knowing ones" that "girls always love those boys who are the kindest, best natured, most considerate and "manlike" in their behavior, and are not coarse, profane and loaferisb in their talk. The boys who are by their schoolmates and playmates loved the best, make the best husbands." School boys will do well to remember this fact and if
kind to and considerate of them, and what is true of school children is equally true and applies even with more force to those of more mature years.
IMPORTANT OPINION.—Attorney-Gen-eral Hauna has given the opinion that the equalization of District Boards was illegal, and cannot be enforced in any of the counties where the appraisement was increased or diminished, and that the foes of the County Treasurers for the collection of taxes, until the collections of the duplicate of 1S70 are completed, must be regulated and be in conformity with the new Fee Law.
STRAWBERRIES.—Our "devil" came into our sanctum last evening with his mouth spread from ear to ear, making vain endeavors to swollow a huge strawberry, which he said he hooked from Rippetoe's. Naughty, wicked devil, for hooking strawberries.

Oi i'ia 'ompany FA Zimmerman We learn from the Philadelphia Jinlthat the Western tour of the Combination was "unquestionably disastrously unprofitable, and so far ped the hard earned savings of the great Prima Donna and her husband, that the common report is that they have been compelled to .solicit positionsm a churcn choir of that city." The creditors will meet in Philadelphia on thelGth oi May and choose one or more assignees of Mr. Bernanl's estate. .It is so unfrequently .the ease that so much of the best talent of the musical world as was represented in this mammoth combination, are thrown togetnei in one company and travel the continent, that it cannot be considered otherwise than a calamity to the lovers oi grand opera to ^ee this lamous and unrivalled combination scperafe, because of the bankruptcy of the management, superinduced by a want of patronage from the people where they have appeared. Terre Haute, did her part on their first appearance to bring about the ,•lamented collapse, but upon their second appearance she gloriously redeemed herself, and we are proud to say that our citizens had nothing to do with the bankruptcy and dismemberment of the completest and most talented company that ever traveled the continent.
A WEDDING occurred in Wabash last week in which the combined ages of the pair were 130 years—the bride being eleven years the older. Both doing well.
A Two MUCH BEGGED CHICKEN.— They are boasting of a hen.,in irginia which has just batched out a four-legge 1 chicken. For eating purposes, the more legs to a chicken the better but when it comes to scratching in a garden, give us chickens without any legs.
(J KAN TEMPERANCE KALLY.—There will be a grand temperance rally at Bowline Hall Sunday afternoon and evening. In the afternoon it will be addressed by Prof. Hoss. of Bioomington, and in the evening by Col. II. Wr. Thompson, both too well known as great champions of the cause to need any comment from us. Let there be a large attendance.
